CELEBRATING A FINE CAREER IN JEWELLERY DESIGN AND CREATION

The remarkable career of critically acclaimed Australian jeweller and maker Blanche Tilden is being showcased in a touring exhibition which opens at the National Art Glass Gallery in Wagga Wagga today (11 December). Blanche Tilden – Ripple effect: a 25 year survey features more than 50 historical and contemporary works – made between 1995 and 2020 – loaned from Australian collecting institutions. “Ripple effect is an exhibition of a quarter of a century of my practice creating jewellery with a focus on glass, which is why it’s wonderful to have this exhibition here at the National Art Glass Gallery,” Ms Tilden said. “It is also significant as the first piece of my work that was acquired by a public collection was by the National Art Glass Gallery in 1995, the year this work begins.” Wagga Wagga Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said it was exciting for the city to have been chosen as the first host venue for the Geelong Gallery’s touring exhibition. “We are so pleased to be able to have this stunning exhibition here at the National Art Glass Gallery, as we have a special link to this amazing artist,” Dr Hall said. “We look forward to giving residents and visitors the opportunity to see the amazing way she transforms industrial materials into aesthetically refined and wearable pieces.” The Art Gallery’s install team has been joined by the Geelong Gallery team this week to put the exhibition together. Exhibition Curator and Geelong Gallery Director Jason Smith said Ripple effect: a 25 year survey and accompanying publication will delight a diverse audience.

“Tilden’s work appeals across art, craft, design and industrial design disciplines,” Mr Smith said. “What people will see is 25 years of continuous thought and work that explores the potential for jewellery to be made from glass and metal in a range of different forms. It’s the connection between the two which is the crux of what Blanche has explored since her early days at art school.” The exhibition also features a series of photographic portraits of private collectors wearing their personal Tilden jewellery, which they have loaned for Ripple Effect. “The connection between people and their stories is really important because to me, jewellery has to be wearable, even though this work is made of glass,” Ms Tilden said. “People often think jewellery is made of precious materials, but really what makes jewellery precious is the memories that it holds or its significance; who gave it to you, where you wear it, why you’ve kept it.” Ripple effect: a 25 year survey runs until Sunday 13 February 2022. “I encourage residents and visitors to put a trip to the National Art Glass Gallery on their list of things to do over summer,” Dr Hall said.

Construction underway at museum site

STEP BACK IN TIME: (from left) Museum Assistant Sophie Magnusson and Regional Museum Officer Samantha Leah sort through some of the 1970s kitsch items which are part of the Museum of the Riverina’s diverse collection.

Construction of the new exhibition building at the Museum of the Riverina, Botanic Gardens site on Lord Baden Powell Drive, has begun. The construction certificate has been issued for the building works to start as part of the major redevelopment of the site. The capital works project will deliver major improvements to the museum's exhibition space and upgrade storage areas to manage the museum’s large and diverse permanent collection holdings, as well as improve the overall visitor experience to this community facility. Project Manager Thomas Lemerle said people will see the new building starting to take shape as they travel along Lord Baden Powell Drive over the coming months. “The new exhibition building will be located in front of the existing museum building

and will feature an entrance foyer, new exhibition space, a community education room, upgraded collection storage areas and accessible toilet facilities,” Mr Lemerle said. “Construction is expected to take six months to complete, weather permitting.” The capital works project received funding from both the NSW Government through the Regional Cultural Fund of $3.18 million and the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions fund of $1.7 million. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the upgrade will create a dynamic and engaging accessible space. “It will engage the community in cultural heritage experiences and address fundamental issues around equitable access and safety at this community facility,” Ms Summerhayes said. “The Museum of the Riverina,

Botanic Gardens site, houses the permanent museum collection and will present a curated series of semi-permanent exhibitions, along with education and public programs that will contribute toward the increased activation of the Botanic Garden Precinct and provide valuable social and cultural connections for residents and visitors to the city.” Regional Museum Officer Samantha Leah said the team has been researching local history and working on stories to showcase in the new exhibition space. “We are looking forward to reopening next year so we can share with the community all the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes,” Ms Leah said. With capital works to be completed by mid-year, the museum is expected to reopen to the public in spring 2022.

NEW ART EXHIBITION: HOW ARTISTS RESPOND TO REGENERATIVE FARMING

The Museum of the Riverina is showcasing the link between artists and regenerative farmers in a new exhibition opening this week at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site. Earth Canvas touring exhibition explores the creative experiences of both regenerative farmers and artists, their respective engagement with the land, and their vision for a healthier world. The Earth Canvas project invited contemporary artists to work on regenerative farms between the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers in southern New South Wales. The project aimed to link the artists’ perspective of the land with the farmers’ management of the land. Museum Assistant Collections and Programs Genevieve Mott said artists were particularly well placed to act as a bridge between farmers and the community. “Farming practices can sometimes feel quite removed from our lives,” Ms Mott said. “By coming together to enjoy

these beautiful artworks, and read the stories behind each artist’s experience, we can appreciate the work many farmers are doing to reverse land degradation. “Regenerative farmers let the land do what it wants to do; they increase the microbes in the soil, they don’t graze or crop back to bare earth and, as a consequence, their farms are full of life and are flourishing, and the visiting artists responded to being in that environment.” Well-known local artist Arthur Wicks has created a special additional work to the travelling exhibition, which was produced in consultation with local farmers Brad and Katie Collins and will be installed in the foyer at the museum. “It’s a work that’s never been seen before and something we’ve not attempted before,” Ms Mott said. “We’re going to keep watering it and growing things on the work – it’ll be fascinating to see it flourish and change as the

exhibition proceeds.” Earth Canvas will be touring cultural venues across Victoria, NSW, South Australia and the ACT, with its final destination being the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. “I’d encourage everyone to come and see the exhibition while it’s here in Wagga Wagga,” Ms Mott said. “Enjoy the spectacular artistry and remember that everybody can make a difference. It’s never too late to regenerate our environment.” Earth Canvas was developed by regional collaborative Earth Canvas: Art in Ag, curated by Albury LibraryMuseum, and supported by the National Museum of Australia. This project has been supported by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program. Earth Canvas is on exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina, Historic Council Chambers site until 27 February 2021. For more information visit museumriverina.com.au

LOCAL TOURISM INDUSTRY RECOGNISED

The strong partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and the local tourism industry was recognised at an end of year gathering for Wagga Wagga Tourism Partner Program members. The function held recently at The Gardens Café and Function Centre was an

opportunity for tourism, travel, hospitality, events and accommodation sectors to come together to network and build relationships across the broader industry. During the evening, former Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Greg Conkey OAM reflected on the key projects and events that Council

delivered in partnership with the Wagga Wagga Tourism Partner Program members over the past 18 months. This included the delivery of the Love NSW Campaign, A Very Wagga Christmas, The Picnic Collective and a series of tourism videos showcasing the diversity of the Wagga Wagga

and surrounding region’s visitor offerings. A new Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide has also been produced and distributed to Visitor Information Centres around Australia and soon a new edition of the Top Spot Maps will be released and distributed regionally.
