Weekly information from us to you SUCCESS: Wagga Wagga and McDonald's Park have been praised after thousands of footy fans flocked to the RaidersPanthers game on 4 May.
Thousands flock to NRL game in Wagga Months of planning and work behind the scenes paid off with 10,079 people filling McDonald’s Park to see the Canberra Raiders down the Penrith Panthers 30-12 on Saturday 4 May. The NRL premiership game was the first as part of a two-year partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and the Raiders, with the option for a third year.
The huge crowd was just shy of the ground’s current capacity of 10,300 and well above the 9127 footy fans who watched CityCountry Origin in 2015. “The playing surface, amenities, the city and our community all received praise from players, coaches and visitors alike,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “The city was absolutely buzzing with the NRL game following the Gold Cup Carnival. Major events like these have a significant impact on our economy, bringing more people to our city and showcasing what we have to offer as a destination. “I would like to thank everyone who made this successful event possible, including Council
staff, the Canberra Raiders, NRL, Destination NSW and Wagga Wagga Rugby League, who put in many hours of work to deliver upgrades at McDonald’s Park in time for the game.” Council received in excess of $400,000 from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund to construct female change facilities at McDonald’s Park and to expand the spectator seating. Wagga Wagga Rugby League was the driving force behind delivering the projects, along with moving the canteens on the eastern side and other improvements across McDonald’s Park. The ground and the city reaped high praise from Canberra Raiders
CEO Don Furner, who said the club is already looking toward the 2020 game. “The entire Raiders organisation encompassing our board members, staff and players sincerely pass on thanks to Mayor Greg Conkey, his Councillor colleagues, Wagga Wagga City Council staff and the broader community for their hospitality and support during our recent regional stay,” Mr Furner said. “We look forward to returning in season 2020 to play another official NRL fixture in your city, one we are confident will surpass this year’s initial venture in terms of providing benefit and inspiration across the Riverina.” In addition to developing McDonald’s Park and putting
Weekly waste tip Household batteries and light globes contain hazardous materials. These items can be disposed of for free through the Community Recycling Station, Civic Centre, cnr Baylis & Morrow Streets.
Wagga Wagga in the national spotlight, the Raiders partnership saw workshops delivered in five schools on respectful relationships by former player Alan Tongue and fundraising at the game for the PCYC. Rugby league locally was also given a boost, with four local junior rugby league teams playing at halftime of the NRL game and Raiders players stopping by the Mortimer Shield interschool gala day. The NRL match also proved to be a historic occasion, with the Raiders performing the Viking Clap for the first time outside of Canberra – led by Wagga Wagga local and former NRL player David Barnhill, who also had the honour of blowing the iconic Viking Horn.

Council focuses on meeting the needs of a growing community From the completion of the Main City Levee Upgrade to work to build infrastructure in the northern growth suburbs, Wagga Wagga City Council’s draft budget for 2019/20 is focused on meeting the needs of a growing community. The draft combined Delivery Program and Operational Plan (DPOP) 2019/20, along with the draft Long Term Financial Plan 2019/2029 and draft Fees and Charges are on public exhibition, with the community able to read over the documents and share their feedback. The 2019/20 budget features a total budget of $203.2M, including $129.8M in operating expenditure and $73.4M in capital expenditure commitments. Council has also again committed $2.1M in contributions, grants and donations to the community next financial year. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga
Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the plans centre on planning for the future and prioritising important services to meet the diverse needs of the community. “We’ve simplified Council’s Combined Delivery Program and Operational Plan to clearly demonstrate the cost of services and to improve the way we report back to the community on our performance,” he said. “It’s going to be another exciting 12 months in Wagga Wagga. We are in the midst of a transformational period that will define the future of our city and surrounding villages for many years to come. “A substantial part of this is planning for future infrastructure and accommodating the significant amount of state and federal government investment in our city. “Wagga Wagga has always been a great place to live, visit and invest and we are set for a positive and exciting future.”
The Integrated Planning and Reporting suite of documents will be on public exhibition until 28 May 2019. Community members can view the draft plans and give their feedback on funding priorities, projects and operations online at waggaview.com.au/ipr.

OPPORTUNITY AWAITS IN THE BOTANIC GARDENS A unique opportunity awaits in the heart of Wagga Wagga’s iconic Botanic Gardens. Wagga Wagga City Council is currently seeking expressions of interest to lease the former café/ restaurant within the gardens, which is popular with local families and visitors alike. The building comprises three separate areas and may be leased separately or as a whole: • A coffee shop/kiosk with outdoor seating area overlooking the children’s playground • A function area with wet bar, cool room, toilets, baby change amenities, office, staff bathroom, private courtyard • A kitchen with cool room, freezer, benches, grease trap and exhaust hood. This could be leased in conjunction with the function area or coffee
shop “This is a unique opportunity for private enterprise, community groups, social enterprises or education organisations offering a suitable benefit to the community and users of the Botanic Gardens,” Council’s Director Corporate Services Natalie Te Pohe said. “These are three flexible spaces that can be combined or separated in one of the city’s most well-known recreation spots, which lends itself to some creative potential uses. “The large space that was formerly a function centre and restaurant could be used for a dance studio, fitness classes or community based activities. The coffee shop and kiosk overlook the children’s playground and is near the entrance to the everpopular Botanic Gardens Zoo.

INSPECTION TIMES
• Tuesday 14 May, 10am • Thursday 16 May, 1pm
Meet Shrimp! The name of the Botanic Gardens Zoo’s newest addition has been decided after hundreds of suggestions from the community. Shrimp (pictured) is the third foal for Jenny and Forrest Gump and the younger brother of Forrest Jr and Bubba. Name suggestions mostly stuck to the Forrest Gump theme, with a few ideas from outside the box of chocolates. Shrimp arrived just in time for the recent school holidays and he and his donkey family proved popular over the Easter period with visitors and locals alike. Jenny’s quest for love captured the hearts of the Wagga Wagga community in 2014 and it took nearly a year to find her beau, which the community dubbed Forrest in 2015. Their first foal, Forrest Jr, moved out of the zoo last year and has gone on to win awards at donkey shows. With Shrimp now on the scene, it’s
time for Bubba to find a new home. Bubba recently turned one and has been hanging out with the alpacas at the zoo since his little brother arrived. He’s keen to find a farmyard of his own and make some new friends, with expressions of interest to adopt Bubba open now until 27 May. For more information or to obtain an expressions of interest form, contact Team Leader Parks Operations (Botanic Gardens) Jon Nicoll on 0424 750 206 or email nicoll.jonathan@wagga.nsw.gov.au.
