$35M enabling roads project complete and open to traffic

The final piece of the $35M Bomen Enabling Roads project is complete. Merino Road, a new link road to the Olympic Highway, was officially opened to traffic today. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and Wagga Wagga City Council General Manager James Bolton were joined by Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack MP and Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire MP for the official opening

of the project. Also joining for the official proceedings was Roads and Maritime Services Regional Manager Lindsay Tanner, representatives from BMD Constructions, who completed the works, ARTC and a number of Bomenbased businesses. The Bomen Enabling Roads project has been taking shape since November last year. Since this time, 365 staff have dedicated a total of 110,000 staff hours to the project, more than half-a-million tonnes of dirt was moved to make way for the new roads with

a total of 65,000 tonnes of gravel laid for the road surfaces. The project has included the construction of 7.1km of new roadways, including the Byrnes Road deviation road, Merino Road, Dorset Drive, a new intersection on the Olympic Highway, two concrete roundabouts, purpose-built entry to the Livestock Marketing Centre and rail underpass, which closed the Dampier Street level crossing. Mr Bolton said the Bomen Enabling Roads project had a number of significant advantages.

“There’s improved safety for all motorists and better access for Higher Mass Limit (HML) vehicles, both into the Bomen Business Park and connections to the Olympic and Sturt highways,” he said. “Completion of the Bomen Enabling Roads Project also supports the potential development of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RIFL) Hub.” The RIFL Hub, combined with the Bomen Enabling Roads project, will help facilitate effective and efficient movement of freight to and from Sydney, Melbourne and other major destinations. City's first inclusive playspace is fully funded A grant of $400,000 has been committed by the State Government to deliver Livvi’s Place Wagga Wagga. The playspace will feature a variety of ground-level accessible or adjustableheight play equipment, interactive sensory pieces and panels and a range of floor coverings and natural plantings. Wagga Wagga City Council has been working with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to deliver the inclusive playspace. In addition to the state grant, a number of funding contributions had also been committed to the playspace, including from Council, Wagga Wagga’s Northcott and Teys Australia, Variety Australia and the NSW Government’s Office of Sport and Recreation. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire MP made the $400,000 funding announcement yesterday at Bolton Park – the future site of the playground.

Cr Conkey welcomed the announcement saying inclusiveness and accessibility were major city priorities. “It is great news that the State Government is now partnering with Wagga Wagga City Council, the Touch by Olivia Foundation and other organisations who have generously provided donations to deliver the Livvi’s Place Wagga Wagga playspace," he said. “This funding will allow all children of all abilities to play together in a fun, safe environment and will showcase best practice for inclusive playgrounds across the state. “The playspace will incorporate universal design principles to ensure everyone is able to enjoy these spaces safely and inclusively.” Coinciding with the funding, was an announcement by the State Government for a new design standard that will apply to all playgrounds across the state to ensure they are accessible for all. The Bomen Enabling Roads project was made possible through funding contributions from all three levels of government. “The completion of road infrastructure enhancements at Bomen is the vital first step in the development of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub, which will become an important cog in the Liberals and Nationals’ Government Inland Rail project,” Mr McCormack said. “This rail network will mean Wagga

Wagga’s industrial hub will be more attractive and more accessible to businesses, which in turn will only strengthen the city and region’s economy. “This ongoing project is a testament to three tiers of government working together to achieve a common goal.” Member for Wagga Wagga Mr Maguire added the project had significant short and long-term benefits. “Road access and traffic safety has been vastly improved around the Bomen Industrial area thanks to the Bomen Enabling Roads Project. “The project will have a huge impact on the flow of traffic allowing for greater access to all industries present in the area. “Furthermore, the new road extensions will facilitate future industrial growth, jobs and prosperity for the region well into the next century."

Fancy a pheasant? Or perhaps you’d like your next companion to be a cockatoo? Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for the sale of pheasants and cockatoos currently housed at the Botanic Gardens Zoo. The available birds include one male silver pheasant, one male golden pheasant, two female ring neck pheasants and two cockatoos. All the birds need new homes where they can spread their wings, as there is not enough space in their current quarters. “We are restricted in the amount of space we

have here at the zoo, and these birds desperately need more space where they can roam freely around”, said Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt. The two cockatoos are a bit of a romantic couple and must be rehomed together. Each of the pheasants are approximately 11 months old and can be expected to live until 15 years old. If you are interested in taking home one of these birds, call Henry Pavitt on 0408 639 366 or email pavitt.henry@wagga.nsw.gov.au. EOI closes on Monday 20 of November 2017 at 5pm.

Wetland's seeds to help grow site at Coolamon

From little things, big things grow – just take a look at the Marrambidya Wetland. Council staff were joined by Wagga Urban Landcare and Murrumbidgee Landcare to collect seeds from a variety of native plants at the wetland this week. They walked the banks and waded out in the mud to gather about 2000 seeds, which will be given to the Coolamon Landcare group to help rehabilitate a degraded wetland on a travelling stock reserve. “The Marrambidya Wetland project has been so successful that Council is now able to help redevelop other wetland areas in the region,” Environmental Management Team Leader Tony Phelps said. “We harvested a couple of thousand seeds, but that is just a small percentage of the seeds and new growth we saw at the wetland on the day. “The majority of seeds we collected for Coolamon were from reeds, rushes and sedges and we tried to get a diverse mix of species. Many of the plants grow on the water’s edge, but we put on the waders and got some of the plants in the deeper water.” The Marrambidya Wetland project saw the disused ponds from the Narrung Street Sewage Treatment Plant transformed through earthworks, the planting of 22,000 seedlings and the

Mr Phelps said each month staff were noticing more and more naturally occurring growth and development at the wetland since it was opened last year. “In June last year we released native carp gudgeons and now we’ve discovered juvenile fish, which shows us the Marrambidya Wetland is thriving and the fish and other species are starting to breed,” he said. “It’s also common to see water birds such as egrets, spoonbills and the occasional pelican at the wetland, while we’ve also spotted frogs making their homes in the marshy areas. “Recently we have seen some juvenile eastern long neck turtles
