a little spot of serenity
CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE: Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes with Min Chua of Mingalar Asian Grocery (seated) and (back, from left) PRD Real Estate’s Anthony Paul, Harry Le of Roll Viet Café and Toby Harris from PRD.
Council has partnered with local business to activate a previously unused public space along Baylis Street, creating a sense of intrigue and surprise for pedestrians. The eye-catching koi-themed creative treatment can be found in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it space between Mingalar Asian Grocery and Roll Viet Café near the Baylis and Forsyth streets intersection. This space is available for outdoor dining or socialising, subject to COVID-19 social gathering restrictions. Community members are encouraged to grab a bite and relax on one of the 100 per cent recycled plastic stools and enjoy this little spot of serenity on the city’s busy main street. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the hidden gem would engage eagle-eyed consumers in a fun way, adding to the buzz in Baylis Street over the warmer months. “The activation is a great example of Council working with property owners and tenants to create positive change for our city,” Ms Hamilton said. “The landowners, PRD Real Estate, and tenants Harry Le of Roll Viet Café and Min Chua of the Mingalar Asian Grocery, were all very supportive of the plan. ‘Adopt don’t shop’ for pets this Christmas Christmas is just around the corner and Wagga Wagga City Council has a message for the local community ‘adopt don’t shop’ if they are thinking about getting a new pet this holiday season. The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter currently has several cats and dogs available to become your new furry family member through adoption.
Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail said residents can give an animal a second chance at a forever home by choosing to adopt from a council animal shelter, RSPCA shelter or approved rehoming organisation. “We’re just asking people to ‘adopt, don’t shop’. There are plenty of rescue cats and rescue dogs that are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful who are needing a new home,” Ms McPhail said. “It helps save a dog. It helps save a cat. It’s your personal choice, but we think with all the animals that are needing homes that we can find one that’s suitable and make it your new fur kid or part of your family.” At Christmas time, people often
welcome a new pet into their families or give a cat or dog as a gift to a loved one. Ms McPhail said it is important to remember that cats and dogs, kittens and puppies should not be given as Christmas gifts unless it is a decision made by the person who is receiving it and the person who is giving it. “They should become part of your family, so you’ve got to make sure everybody’s happy about it and you’re willing to give the constant support – financially and emotionally,” Ms McPhail said. “Animals do require a lot of attention and you just need to make sure all involved are ready for that commitment.” Continued on page 2.
FINDING A FUREVER HOME: Council's Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail says your next best friend could be waiting for you at your local animal shelter.

Creating positive change in Wagga Wagga's main street From page 1. Building on the recent success of the Tompson Street mural Morning Light, Ms Hamilton said Council was planning further surprise temporary art installations in the city’s centre
as part of the NSW Places to Love Demonstration Project funding. This activation project is funded by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment as part of the Places to Love initiative.
UNUSED: The small public space has been completely transformed from its earlier appearance.
SWIMMING FLOWERS
Koi have intrigued and inspired for centuries. These colourful cultivated forms of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, developed in Japan and other parts of eastern temperate Asia. Sometimes referred to as living jewels or swimming flowers for their physical beauty, koi are also rich with symbolic significance, symbolising good fortune and auspicious circumstances in many Asian cultures. Whether you cultivate the fish or display koi emblems, symbols or tattoos, it is believed that koi can help draw positive energies to you and your family.
'ADOP T DON'T SHOP '
From page 1. The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter’s aim is to reunite the animals which come into the facility with their owner. If that is unsuccessful, the animal is then put up for adoption. “Adoption is on a ‘first come, first served’ basis,” Ms McPhail said. “We also like to make sure applicants understand the responsibilities of pet ownership and are making the
right choice of pet. “If they come looking for a little Chihuahua but they want to put an application in on a Great Dane, then we may have to have a bit of a chat.” The adoption fee for each cat or dog, puppy or kitten, covers desexing, first vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, lifetime registration and an ID tag. 'Life's a buzz' for Aunty Isabel
Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Isabel Reid was this week recognised for her lifetime’s work in the community and being a strong advocate for First Nations Peoples. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM described her as an “inspiration”. Her family said “Nan” is their “matriarch who we love and constantly look up to.” The accolades continued to flow for Aunty Isabel at the Mayoral Reception to recognise her recent award for being named NSW Senior Citizen of the Year 2021. “Life’s a buzz for me at the moment,” Aunty Isabel said. “There’s been so much happening and this award is a great honour. “I am so very proud of what I have achieved. Thankyou to everyone.”

The final stages of the $2.2M upgrade to the sheep yards at Wagga Wagga City Council’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) are underway. Work on the upgrade to increase sale day capacity at the premier selling facility in New South Wales is on schedule for competition in late February next year. This project is the first upgrade to the sheep yards since 2,000 and will add 25 per cent capacity on sale days. Project Manager Kym Holbrook said Council has consulted with the Selling Agents’ Association and producers to ensure the new section of yards is meeting the needs of the industry. “We identified some important changes in that process, and whilst those changes were very minor, it will make a difference to more efficient processes on sale day,” Mr Holbrook said.

Step back in time with Made in Wagga exhibition From the industries which helped drive the growth of Wagga Wagga to some of the city’s unique events, the Museum of the Riverina’s latest exhibition shows us why the city is such a unique place. Launched on Tuesday (8 December 2020), Made in Wagga: Retrospective is a fresh take on the original Made in Wagga exhibition held in 2005. Curator Michelle Maddison said the retrospective features items mainly from the museum’s permanent collection, including some making their public debut. “Visitors to the exhibition will see a range of stories and associated objects highlighting aspects of the city’s history,” Ms Maddison said. “A well-loved object featured is the Gold Chiko Roll displayed in the Handy Chiko Holder. We’re very proud to say in this city that the Chiko Roll was launched in Wagga, so to have the Gold Chiko Roll displayed in this novelty holder just adds a bit of fun. “For the first time, we’ll have the full Dunlop Weatherproof Factory collection displayed
RETURNING TO NATURE: Students from Turvey Park Public School enjoyed identifying different species and spotting baby birds at a recent excursion to the Marrambidya Wetland.
GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST: Made in Wagga curator Michelle Maddison with one of the Gumi Queen tiaras on display in the latest exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina. including a riding jacket, a Sou’wester hat and a beautiful pair of ladies’ waterproof shoes that are highheeled and all, from about 1945.” There is also a collection of Gumi Festival memorabilia and some objects from the history of Kendell Airlines donated to the museum by Geoff Breust, former CEO of Kendell and Rex airlines. Among other items on display are Murrumbidgee Milling Company products, a Riverina Movement badge from 1931, and bricks from Willis
Brickworks. Museum Manager Luke Grealy said the museum has new objects and stories in its permanent collection that have never been publicly exhibited. “Made in Wagga: Retrospective talks about all those gorgeous things, from Gumis to airlines, that were created in our wonderful city,” Mr Grealy said. “We’re expecting there’ll be quite a mix of audience members coming in to see these new objects and local stories, from young people who are curious about the past to the
people who remember these businesses, who worked there or shopped there. “So, come down to the Museum of the Riverina Historic Council Chambers site, which will be nice and cool and has plenty of space for families to relax, and learn about the history of Wagga Wagga over the summer holiday period.” Made in Wagga: Retrospective runs from 8 December 2020 to 4 April 2021. Celebrating a city: summertime projections Two digital projections are set to light up the evening sky in the Wollundry Lagoon precinct this holiday season. The commissioned works Rural Type Exchange by Tonya Meyrick and The Sanctuary by Cindi Drennan will play on a loop every evening from 9 December 2020 to 11 January 2021. Rural Type Exchange was created as a celebration of Wagga Wagga City Council’s 150 years as a municipality. Melbourne-based artist Tonya
Meyrick worked with students from Kildare Catholic College to source local signage, maps and photographs relating to the city’s history. “I started to develop an archive of typefaces from buildings and signs around the city – down streets and laneways, from buildings, lively playgrounds and bustling areas,” Ms Meyrick said. “Wagga has been through so much as a city and possesses an immensely rich history. “Gleaning the typefaces from

walls, signs and footpaths led me to develop a story of Wagga Wagga.” Ms Meyrick hopes residents who see the projection come away with a different perspective of the place they call home. The second digital projection featured – The Sanctuary – celebrates Wagga Wagga’s birdlife and was created by local enthusiasts who participated in a series of illustration workshops with lead artist Cindi Drennan, which included a site visit to the Marrambidya Wetland to discover local bird species. Ms Drennan said the project gave local bird lovers a chance to meet each other and celebrate the abundant birdlife in the area. “The most challenging aspect was finding a way to bring all those community viewpoints into one story but, in the end, the birds themselves inspired us,” Ms Drennan said. “All the drawings are personal reflections and choices, which reflect community feelings about how birds enter into our daily lives as a visitor, a friend who comes to know us, or a guide who invites us to notice the environment. “We hope The Sanctuary inspires the local community to protect bird habitats, keep dogs on the leash at the wetland and put water out for feathered friends in their backyard.”
Students flock to city's wetland
Local students have flocked to Marrambidya Wetland as excursions, originally put on hold due to the pandemic, are back on the agenda before the end of the school year. More than 180 students from Lutheran School Wagga Wagga, Henschke Primary School and Turvey Park Public School visited the wetland to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature during spring. Students spotted wetland birds including Black-winged Stilts, White-necked Herons, Australasian Darter, Pelicans, and even a few pairs of Australian Wood Ducks with their baby chicks, with some students treated to a sunbaking display by Eastern long-necked turtles. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said the Marrambidya Wetland is a space where students can get up close and personal with the natural environment and, in doing so, develop a deeper connection with it. “We want to get our kids into nature and experience it,” Ms Kent said. “It’s from there we hope they will foster a curiosity about it and build their knowledge and skills in order to help protect it in the future.”
IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES Ms Kent said the documented association between increased time in nature and positive mental health outcomes was a great reason to encourage young people to spend more time outdoors.
“Nature can be confronting to some, especially as, over the last few decades, we’ve been spending less and less time in it as a society,” Ms Kent said. “These excursions offer children a bit of an introduction and invitation to get back to nature, and see what a beautiful place it is to be.”
SPRINGTIME VIEWING
Ms Kent said spring is an ideal time to see wildlife at the wetland, with many birds visiting or rearing their young. “The children aren’t seeing the birds in books – they’re seeing them right there in front of them and they can have a go at trying to identify them,” Ms Kent said. “It’s especially fun when we can spot baby birds. “We get many students visiting the wetland for the first time and it’s so exciting to hear that they want to bring their friends and family back.”
FREE WORKSHOPS
Wagga Wagga City Council offers schools free workshops through the School Sustainability Session program which aims to engage students in local environmental challenges including biodiversity, water conservation, urban salinity and habitat protection.
