a little spot of serenity

CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE: Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes with Min Chua of Mingalar Asian Grocery (seated) and (back, from left) PRD Real Estate’s Anthony Paul, Harry Le of Roll Viet Café and Toby Harris from PRD.

Council has partnered with local business to activate a previously unused public space along Baylis Street, creating a sense of intrigue and surprise for pedestrians. The eye-catching koi-themed creative treatment can be found in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it space between Mingalar Asian Grocery and Roll Viet Café near the Baylis and Forsyth streets intersection. This space is available for outdoor dining or socialising, subject to COVID-19 social gathering restrictions. Community members are encouraged to grab a bite and relax on one of the 100 per cent recycled plastic stools and enjoy this little spot of serenity on the city’s busy main street. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the hidden gem would engage eagle-eyed consumers in a fun way, adding to the buzz in Baylis Street over the warmer months. “The activation is a great example of Council working with property owners and tenants to create positive change for our city,” Ms Hamilton said. “The landowners, PRD Real Estate, and tenants Harry Le of Roll Viet Café and Min Chua of the Mingalar Asian Grocery, were all very supportive of the plan. ‘Adopt don’t shop’ for pets this Christmas Christmas is just around the corner and Wagga Wagga City Council has a message for the local community ‘adopt don’t shop’ if they are thinking about getting a new pet this holiday season. The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter currently has several cats and dogs available to become your new furry family member through adoption.

Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail said residents can give an animal a second chance at a forever home by choosing to adopt from a council animal shelter, RSPCA shelter or approved rehoming organisation. “We’re just asking people to ‘adopt, don’t shop’. There are plenty of rescue cats and rescue dogs that are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful who are needing a new home,” Ms McPhail said. “It helps save a dog. It helps save a cat. It’s your personal choice, but we think with all the animals that are needing homes that we can find one that’s suitable and make it your new fur kid or part of your family.” At Christmas time, people often

welcome a new pet into their families or give a cat or dog as a gift to a loved one. Ms McPhail said it is important to remember that cats and dogs, kittens and puppies should not be given as Christmas gifts unless it is a decision made by the person who is receiving it and the person who is giving it. “They should become part of your family, so you’ve got to make sure everybody’s happy about it and you’re willing to give the constant support – financially and emotionally,” Ms McPhail said. “Animals do require a lot of attention and you just need to make sure all involved are ready for that commitment.” Continued on page 2.

FINDING A FUREVER HOME: Council's Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail says your next best friend could be waiting for you at your local animal shelter.
