Food for fines Almost one hundred boxes of food are on their way to the people who need them most following another successful Food For Fines campaign by Wagga Wagga City Library. The Salvation Army’s (from left) Bruce Douglas and Judy Allen collected the donations this week from Wagga Wagga City Library Manager Claire Campbell (right). Food For Fines takes place in the lead up to Christmas each year and allows library members to donate non-perishable food items instead of paying any late fees they may have accumulated throughout the year. The campaign helps restock the Salvation Army’s shelves for the new year after the Christmas period.

SHARP SHOOTER: Council’s Environmental Health Co-ordinator Sharomi Dayanand with the awards earned at the recent function in Sydney.
SHARPS SAFETY CAMPAIGN EARNS COUNCIL STATE AWARD
A Wagga Wagga City Council program to help local children identify used sharps and understand their dangers has been recognised at the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards. Council’s Environmental Health Section won the Divisional and Overall 2017-2018 award in the Community Sharps Management Category.
The introduction of the Be Sharps Smart program and ongoing contribution to public safety through its effective community sharps management program won Council the Excellence in Environment Award. The Be Sharps Smart program was rolled out in September 2017, helping to educate children across communities to
identify used sharps and their dangers. It assists children to understand the actions that need to be taken when sharps are spotted. The children’s story book that was developed and published to promote the sharps safety message is now being used by other councils in NSW to help create a safer, sharps-free environment for the community.
