MARKING A MILESTONE The $4.88 million redevelopment of the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site on Lord Baden Powell Drive has reached a milestone, with the structural steel being installed for the new exhibition gallery. The project is funded through the State Government’s NSW Regional Cultural Fund ($3.18 million) and the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund ($1.7 million). Continued inside

Council continues support of city’s Business Chamber Council is continuing its collaboration with the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber, which has contributed significantly to the survival and growth of local business and industry over the last two years.

January and June 2022, with the new MOU expected to commence in July 2022. Under the original two-year MOU initiated in January 2020, Council provided funding of $130,000. Manager City Strategy Chris Barrett said there were mutual benefits for both the business and wider community through Council’s continued support. “It’s incredibly important for the future of Wagga to have a strong and united business voice,” Mr Barrett said. “We’ve seen a significant strengthening in the Business Chamber’s capacity to help individual businesses. At this week’s Ordinary “It has been working Council Meeting, Councillors closely with the local agreed to enter into a sixbusiness community on our month interim arrangement with the Business Chamber behalf, giving businesses a pending finalisation of a new much better understanding three-year memorandum of of Council’s priorities and policies, which in turn helps understanding (MOU). businesses progress. Council will provide “It’s been a mutually $32,500 in funding between

beneficial partnership and we’re happy to see it continue.” Business Manager Serena Hardwick from the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber said support from Council enables the Chamber to provide more resources for local businesses. “We can advocate for businesses and connect them to opportunities and services that will assist them,” Ms Hardwick said “We’re also able to represent the business community in different industry forums, create initiatives and projects such as the Shop Local Wagga Wagga gift card program, and bring additional events to the city to educate and inform the business community. “I believe that our partnership with Council is essential in making Wagga Wagga a great place and an easy place to do business.”

Mr Barrett said Council would use the next MOU with the Business Chamber to focus on two key priorities; recovery from COVID and building capacity for local businesses to be part of major infrastructure projects in our region. “While Wagga hasn’t been as hard hit as many other areas, it’s quite clear a lot of businesses have been very challenged by the pandemic and need support from their local business chamber to return to something like normal operations,” Mr Barrett said. “The other thing we’re very conscious of is the enormous demand on the local workforce and businesses to respond to some of the major infrastructure projects occurring. “It’s estimated that there will be over $10 billion in major infrastructure projects in and around the city over

the next decade. “For our city to reap the benefits, we really need to have a strong Business Chamber and Council needs

to put that seed funding into the Chamber so it can grow and develop and become even more effective as a business voice for Wagga.”

City Council will host local indie folk singer/songwriter duo The Debras and up-and-coming indiealternative band Frostbite. The event will be closed out by independent hip hop artist from South-West Sydney, B Wise, who is set to deliver a soulful blend of electro-pop and R&B, a hypnotic style that has awarded him national recognition. Museum of the Riverina redevelopment marks a milestone From front page The capital works project will deliver major improvements to the museum including a new exhibition gallery, community learning space, upgrade of the existing museum building into a collection storage space to manage the museum’s large and diverse permanent collection holdings, and improve the overall access and visitor experience to this community facility. Project Manager Tom Lemerle said the new exhibition gallery is located in front of the existing museum building. “While the cladding is not up yet, with the structural steel now being installed, it gives an understanding of the scale and form the final building will have when completed," Lemerle said. “Once the structural steel is completed,

the roof will go on and then we will proceed with the building fit out and finishes. “In the existing museum building, the focus has been on plastering works and internal wall linings and that’s all completed and ready for painting. “We are upgrading the existing building into a really good storage space for the museum’s collections.” Another part of the redevelopment schedule is the conversion of the historic Frog Hollow schoolhouse, situated on the western side of the site facing east, into a modern education space. These works are also on track, with external painting completed and internal painting underway. Museum Manager Luke Grealy is excited about what’s ahead for the museum service.

“We will have a collection storage facility, including cold storage object treatment and processing spaces, dedicated collection shelving and storage and staff office spaces. “These improvements will enable us to care for the 25,000 objects in the Museum’s permanent collection holdings and tell our city’s and the wider region's story in new ways to wider audiences.” The capital works program is expected to be completed mid-year, followed by a return-to-site process for the collection holdings that are currently located in temporary storage locations to protect them while the capital works program is underway. The museum is expected to reopen to the public in late 2022.

FRESH APPEARANCE: The historic Frog Hollow schoolhouse at the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site gets a new coat of paint inside and out as part of its conversion into a modern education space.

Council fast-tracks funding for city events

Council is continuing to support the city’s economic and cultural recovery from COVID-19 by fast-tracking financial support to bring a range of events and festivals back to the city. The second round of the 2021/22 COVID-19 Fast Track Event Sponsorship Program was recommended this week, with the final four applications supported at the 7 March 2022 Ordinary Council meeting. The 2022 Mardi Gras Festival, Gears and Beers Festival, and the Stone the Crows Festival are among the eight events sponsored by the second round, to a total of $84,918. This follows the initial round, which saw 10 events sponsored to a total value of $97,726, including Fitz Fest, the Riverina Conservatorium of Music’s Live at Lunch, and the MTC – Southern District Racing Association’s Country

Championships. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the fast-track sponsorship program was established to assist and encourage event organisers to adapt and deliver events as part of the NSW Government’s Roadmap to Recovery. “We set aside this funding to invest in rebuilding our events to give the community something to look forward to and to drive visitation to the city, which in turn creates flowon effects to local business,” Ms Hamilton said. “Event organisers were among the hardest hit over the last two years, so we’re pleased we can offer this financial support and help organisers innovate and adapt as they re-enter the event space.” Ms Hamilton said the regular staging of events was important to the community.

“Having a healthy line-up of events is hugely beneficial to our city and the wider region,” Ms Hamilton said. “Events not only create community connection but also increase spending in our local economy by attracting visitors who will book accommodation, eat out at our restaurants and go shopping while they’re here. “The economic benefit of any one event can be many times the cost of staging the actual event itself.” To keep up to date with local events, including the month-long Fresh program and FUSION22 pick up your copy of the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds What's On guide for autumn 2022 at the Wagga Wagga Visitor Information Centre, local businesses, or download your copy at visitwagga.com

Opportunity to operate Riverside Stage 2 food van Wagga Wagga City Council is seeking Expression of Interest submissions from parties interested in licensing a food van located within the Riverside Precinct, to provide food services to the public. The food van will be located within the Riverside Precinct, east of Johnston and Church Streets and adjoining the Wagga Wagga Beach and Wiradjuri Walking Track. Council Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said the van has been developed as part of the Riverside Stage 2 Project. “The project is nearing completion, and once it opens to the public, we expect that it will be a significant attraction for the area from a casual visitation point-of-view as well as events,” Mr Creighton said.

“We’re looking for an operator who will be able to provide food and beverage services to that precinct. “The intention is that people will be able buy something to eat or drink while they’re at the Riverside precinct, whether it’s for small events, while the kids are using the new playground, or they’re walking or riding past on the shared pathway along the Wiradjuri Trail.” In addition to operating the van, the successful licensee would also have the option to bring in additional food and beverage services to the venue.
