Fitz live a banger

Crowds of music lovers flocked to Fitzmaurice Street on Saturday for the second Fitz Live event organised by Wagga Wagga City Council. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton was thrilled with the response. “The atmosphere along Fitzmaurice Street was energetic and enthusiastic, with

people turning out in even greater numbers than the first event held in March,” she said. “Fitz Live is a strong indication that events which support live and local music have great support in the community.” “As well as the very talented bands and musicians, many of our tourism partners at the 11 venues put a lot of effort into making the

event such a success. A huge vote of thanks to Kidsons Cycles, CAVE Restaurant & Bar, Eastern Riverina Arts, The Pavilion Hotel, Uneke Lounge, Knights Meats & Deli, Thirsty Crow, Thaigga, Café Sonder, Romano’s Hotel, Giuseppe’s Restaurant & Bar.” Fitz Live was made possible with the support of Create NSW and Live Music Office.

MAKING A SPLASH: The Rockpools entertain the crowd at Romano’s during last weekend’s second Fitz Live, which saw 11 venues host a diverse range of musical acts.

Lake Albert algae alert lowered The blue-green algae alert for the majority of Lake Albert has been lowered, with a 30m exclusion zone in place at the northern and eastern shore of the lake. water in this area, or where an algal scum can be seen. Council regularly conducts water quality monitoring at Lake Albert in line with National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guidelines, with the current alert first issued on 21 December 2017. For an alert to be downgraded there must be two consecutive samples at a low level and no algal scums present. Samples have returned lower levels of

cyanobacteria and Council staff have been working closely with the organisers of this weekend’s Barry Carne Interstate Ski Challenge to minimise any impact on the event. “Staff have been regularly testing the water throughout the alert period and while there have been lower readings at times, the algae has still been visually present,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Manager Environment and City Compliance Mark Gardiner said. “A range of factors contribute to higher blue-green algae levels and at Lake Albert

the continuing warm weather and low rainfall have seen the algae persist for a number of months. “With the current cold weather pattern there has been a significant reduction in the blue-green algae present in the lake and the westerly winds are containing it to the north and east sections of the lake. “We have put a 30m exclusion zone in place in this section, which is marked with signs on the shore and buoys on the water.” Continued inside

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DUNNS ROAD

Community members are invited to share their thoughts on the long-term future of Dunns Road at a drop-in session on 21 May. In the lead up to the 2016 federal election, it was announced Council would receive a $2.5M grant for Dunns Road, to be matched by Council. At the September 2017 Council Meeting, it was

presented to Council at a coming meeting. “The independent consultants are undertaking an in-depth study, reviewing the existing design for Dunns Road and determining the scope of works that would be required to upgrade it,” he said. “They will also be taking into account the traffic flowon effects if Dunns Road was upgraded and they are looking

resolved to engage a consultant to determine the scope and cost of works required to upgrade Dunns Road, as initial costings found the project may exceed the $5M budget. Council’s Manager Technical and Strategy Peter Ross said the consultants will be in Wagga Wagga later this month to gather community feedback, which will be compiled with the technical information and costings before being

forward to hearing the thoughts of nearby residents and the wider community so they can provide a complete picture of the project to Council.” Along with the community drop-in session, residents can share their thoughts on Dunns Road online at waggaview. com.au from 14 to 23 May. Additional meetings will also be held with groups that have submitted recent petitions to Council on Dunns Road.

Without regular rainfall, Lake Albert receives a high dose of nutrients from the stormwater when it does rain, such as from fertiliser and animal faeces, which can cause blue-green algae to persist. “With cooler weather and rain forecast, the cyanobacteria will become less prevalent and we will continue to monitor the lake closely.”

N AT I O N A L E M E R G I N G A RT G L A S S PRIZE EXHIBITION NOW ON STALWARTS: As part of Family Day Care Week, Patron of WWRFDC Mary Kidson (second from left) was recognised along with Educators (L to R) Maureen Curry, Helen Hillier, Shannon Carroll, Rebecca Pollard and Sheryl Simpson for their decades of service.

PATRON MARY KIDSON RECOGNISED IN FAMILY DAY CARE WEEK EVENTS

Celebrations to mark this year’s Family Day Care Week were held on Tuesday 8 May, with an open day for families, a presentation to mark the service of five educators, and the renaming of the Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) hall in recognition of patron, Mary Kidson. WWRFDC Manager Kym Stewart said the play session hall at the Botanic Gardens was renamed the Mary Kidson Hall to recognise the work of Family Day Care service founder Mary Kidson. “Mary Kidson is the patron of WWRFDC and maintains an active role in the promotion of

the service today,” she said. “The hall is a wonderful resource and focal point for Family Day Care where we operate a play session three days per week. It also has a mobile play session for rural villages, with an artist in residence providing a diverse program for children. “Family Day Care Week is a celebration of the unique education and care that WWRFDC provides through small groups in the home of a registered and qualified Educator.” On the same day, five educators including Maureen Curry, were

recognised for their dedication and commitment as educators. Maureen, who has been an educator for 35 years, has cared for 162 children in her home since she started with WWRFDC in April, 1983. Other educators recognised for their service to WWRFDC were Helen Hillier (30 years), Sheryl Simpson (25 years) and Shannon Carroll and Rebecca Pollard for their 10 years of service respectively. Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care provides quality education and care for children up to 13 years of age in the homes of Family Day Care educators.

A three-metre installation of kilnformed glass across two panels has been revealed as the winner of the National Emerging Art Glass Prize 2018. Artist Rose-Mary Faulkner was recognised for her work Continuum (pictured) at the opening of the prize exhibition at the National Art Glass Gallery on 4 May. The winning piece will now be acquired for Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s National Art Glass Collection. Ms Faulkner will receive a fully paid residency at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland, one of the world’s most prestigious centres for the study and development of glass art. The Friends of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery have also provided a prize of $4000 to assist Ms Faulkner in this residency. “My current work presents a study of my own body from the restricted, subjective line of sight we have of ourselves, aiming to map the female figure through abstracted and layered

photographic imagery in order to analyse form and surface,” Ms Faulkner said. “I investigate ways to observe and experience the body, expressed visually through soft dappled imagery, evocative of feeling and sensation.” The exhibition was launched by 2014 winner Sarah Humphrey and the prize itself was judged by two of Australia’s most respected experts in the field of glass, glass artist Bethany Wheeler and industry specialist Suzanne Brett. The judges also awarded two highly commended certificates to Clare Peters for her fused glass work Hope Upheld and Namdoo Kim for his set of nine core-cast pieces Expendable Being. Both of the highly commended artists will also receive an award of $1000 provided by the Wollundry Too Art Group. The National Emerging Art Glass Prize 2018 exhibition will be on display in the National Art Glass Gallery at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery until 29 July.

Applications open for Tourism Partner Program

Applications for the Wagga Tourism Partner Program open this month, with local businesses encouraged to participate in the rewarding Wagga Wagga City Council initiative. Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the second year of the program was a success, with partner numbers growing from 70 to 122, including 10 other councils, and she expected this number to increase in the coming year as more businesses see the benefits of the partnership program. “In 2017/18 we held seven industry member workshops and produced

three new publications: a Conference and Function Guide, Wagga Wagga and Surrounds Visitor Guide, Wagga Wagga and Surrounds Discovery Map with a selection of partners also collaborating on new micro festivals like Fitz Live,” she said. Annually, 1.4 million visitors choose Wagga as a destination for short or long stays for work or leisure and spent about $340M at local businesses. The innovative program is an opportunity for local tourism-related businesses to partner with Visit Wagga marketing campaigns, visitor publications, event collaborations and tap into industry

development and support. “We’ve tweaked the 2018/19 program, our third, in response to feedback from our partners,” Ms Hamilton said. “Changes include tiered membership options, which will be open to all businesses within the Wagga Wagga Local Government area and businesses within 120km of Wagga. “There’ll be additional print publications introduced, in response to the popularity of the current collateral. In addition, we’ll offer more industry networking and workshop opportunities.” Owner of Cave BBQ, Jason Crowley, is a

current tourism partner. “Becoming a Wagga Tourism Partner has opened up a whole new range of opportunities to not only grow and develop what we offer to visitors, but to interact and network with other partners to collaborate and drive increased visitation to our region,” he said. Businesses and other organisations can sign up for the Wagga Tourism Partner Program at any time during the year, but to be included in the 2018/19 Visitor Guide they will need to join by 13 June. Find more information and a copy of the program prospectus at visitwagga.com/partners.

MITCHELL ROAD WORKS CONTINUE

The second stage of 1km of road rehabilitation works at Mitchell Road (between Cummins Road and Gregadoo Road) are well underway. The road pavement height was raised to improve the road quality, and additional works were undertaken to raise the height of adjacent driveways and improve drainage. Next week a gravel base will be laid across the prepared road base. Works extend to Silverwood Road where 100 metres was prepared and stabilised this week in preparation for sealing at the same time as Mitchell Road. Sealing is scheduled for 25 May, weather permitting. The final product will be sealed roads that are suitable to accommodate the increasing volume of heavy vehicle traffic on the road. Stop/go traffic controls are in place with temporary closures at times. The site is open to traffic at the end of each day. wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads

F U N D I N G FLOWS FO R LIT T E R R E DU C TI O N PROG R A M S

This week Council received $101,595 funding from the State Government for two litter reduction campaigns which will target illegal dumping and litter prevention programs. The first campaign, funded by a $39,095 grant, kicks off this month and aims to reduce litter along the access roads to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC). Environmental Education Officer Samantha Parsell says the focus of the campaign is to educate GWMC users to cover their loads when travelling to the facility via Mitchell, Gregadoo and Ashfords roads. “The message is to securely cover your load, and prevent things like unwanted household materials, green waste and packaging materials from escaping and littering the roadside,” she said. “Not only is the litter unattractive, it’s costly to clean up and can land drivers with fines and a loss of licence points. The penalty for unsecured or overhanging loads is three demerit points and a $439 fine; uncollected rubbish that falls off the back of a load attracts the same fine. The project will kick off with an initial

site clean-up of Mitchell, Gregadoo and Ashfords Roads, followed by an education campaign through local radio, newspaper and social media. “Signs will be installed on the access roads to GWMC to remind drivers about the importance of covering loads and the potential fines for noncompliance. “Following the education campaigns, Council compliance officers will undertake a number enforcement blitzes at GWMC and issue fines for uncovered loads.” At the conclusion of the campaign there will be a clean-up along the target roads to measure whether the target of a 30 percent reduction in waste has been met.

COVER YOUR LOAD SECURELY

• Penalties for uncovered loads includes the loss of three demerit points and $439 fine. • Uncollected rubbish that falls off the back of a load attracts the same fine. • If you see someone littering from a vehicle, report them and a fine of $250 for an individual and $500 for a corporation can be issued. Report your sightings at epa.nsw.gov.au.
