Weekly information from us to you PEDAL POWER: New South Wales Deputy Premier John Barilaro (left) and Wagga Wagga Mayor Greg Conkey get ready to test out the new Levee Link pathway after its official opening in the city on Thursday.
LEVEE LINK l the 'wheel' dea In front of an enthusiastic crowd, New South Wales Deputy Premier John Barilaro and Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM have donned their helmets to officially open the first section of the Commuter Cycle Network. The pair led community members on a historic ride along the Levee Link on Thursday to mark the milestone grand opening. The picturesque Levee Link is the first section of the Commuter Cycle Network to be completed as part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s $12.8M Active Travel Plan. It winds its way from the Wiradjuri Bridge to Wagga Beach and is the first of 10 routes of high-quality cycle paths to be unveiled to residents. Continued on page 4
$29M funding boost for Bomen The next stage in the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub’s development at Bomen Enterprise Area has been assured after Wagga Wagga City Council this week secured $29.18M in State Government funding.
during a visit to Bomen on Thursday is the next step in a long-term vision to create a unique facility to support and encourage industrial investment and employment opportunities. Council General Manager Peter Thompson said the funding will support two key initiatives to ensure the full potential of economic gains are realised at Bomen. These initiatives centre on the industrial estate’s enabling infrastructure, including civil works, utilities and roads, and also digital connectivity for new and existing businesses in the enterprise area. “The overall objective of this funding application is to make Bomen and The Growing Local Economies funding announced by Deputy Premier John Barilaro regional NSW a more attractive, efficient and affordable place to do business,” Mr
Thompson said. “This will allow growth of the NSW economy, the creation of new jobs and deliver on the economic promise of Bomen. “Further uptake of industrial land in Bomen will create jobs and drive regional growth and productivity. This is the next important piece in the development of the RiFL Hub.” Council will now work towards developing a 60-hectare lot of land immediately adjacent to the RiFL Hub. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the funding was crucial for Council to realise the development of this parcel of land. “This site presents unique opportunities to derive efficiencies from being located so
close to the RiFL Hub,” Cr Conkey said. “Market interest has been growing with the impending construction of the RiFL Hub and this announcement will confirm the future vision and drive further interest and demand from existing and new business. “The proximity to the RiFL Hub and its freight connections will be attractive to new businesses which will continue to drive growth in the business park and result in more activity through the RiFL Hub.” Digital connectivity at the new 60ha subdivision, and most importantly to existing businesses, will enable businesses to leverage the potential of technology in driving productivity and growth, Cr Conkey said. TRE A SU RE H U NTE R S WA R N E D TO S TAY O FF SPO R TI N G FI E LDS Wagga Wagga City Council is warning community members that digging for metal objects on sporting ovals or grounds across the region is strictly forbidden. The warning comes in the wake of an alarming discovery at Wagga’s Duke of Kent Oval, where Council staff found a series of deep holes dug into the facility’s turf surface. “We’ve now found up to 10 of the holes at Duke of Kent Oval,” Team Leader Parks OperationsSportsgrounds, Brian Cattell said. “The Wagga Wagga and District Cricket Association competition actually starts this weekend, so we are relieved we found these holes in time. “They are almost impossible to see until you’re right above them … making them even more dangerous.” The holes, estimated to be about 10cm deep, have been found in
two locations on the oval, posing enormous risk to athletes or recreational users utilising the sporting facility. “This is a really dangerous practice,” Mr Cattell said. “These holes are quite deep and have the potential to cause a significant injury.” Council staff believe the holes are being created by would-be “treasure hunters”, searching for different objects with the help of metal detectors. “This dangerous activity will not be tolerated,” Mr Cattell said. “We are asking members of the community to be on alert… and to contact us if they notice anyone acting suspiciously on our sporting grounds or ovals.” This isn’t the first time Council has discovered holes of this nature dug into sporting ovals around the city.
pet
“Those ones had all been filled in,” Mr Cattell said. As with the majority of sports and hobbies, budding detectorists are advised to adhere to certain guidelines, ensuring they are operating safely and legally. Detectorists must seek permission before using their devices on private land and are encouraged to seek information from Council about areas that may off limits. People are reminded the Code of Conduct, available on Detectors Down Under, highlights the need to fill in any holes made while using metal detectors. Members of the public who believe someone is operating a metal detector on a Council-operated facility is encouraged to phone Council’s Call Centre on either 1300 292 442 or 6926 9100.
DAMAGED GROUNDS: A number of holes have been found dug into the turf at Duke of Kent Oval. It’s not the first time local grounds have been targeted. The holes have since been filled and the ground is ready for the start of cricket season this weekend.

Councillors have endorsed a recommendation to revise the selection criteria for Wagga Wagga City Council’s Sporting Hall of Fame to make it clearer for future panellists and nominators. Moving forward, athletes will be eligible for the city’s most prestigious sporting honour once they retire from either international competition or the highest level of competition in their chosen sport – where international representation is not an option. “This is only a very small change to the selection criteria,” Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said. “Historically, it’s been when they’ve retired from the highest level of competition. “Now the criteria will read, retiring from International competition, or the highest level of competition. This change was made in order to make the criteria clearer for future panels when assessing applications.” Nominees who are successfully inducted into the city’s Sporting Hall of Fame are recognised as having made a valuable contribution to their chosen sport. “These are athletes haven’t just participated at the elite level, they have achieved a very high standard during their careers,” Mr Creighton said. “That would usually mean representing Australia. However, when there is no avenue to represent the country, it could come down to earning selection in an All Australian Team.”
Wagga Wagga City Council has agreed to sponsor the 2020 Mardi Gras Festival to the tune of $20,000 from the 2019/20 Major Events Sponsorship budget. Earlier this year the inaugural Wagga Wagga Mardi Gras attracted 39 groups for the momentous march, with a strong crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators and supporters. Next year’s festival is expected to be even bigger and better, set to run over three days, beginning with a drag night on 13 March. The highly anticipated parade will take place on 14 March, followed by the rainbow recovery breakfast on 15 March at the Victory Memorial Gardens. Registrations are now
open for the “city’s biggest party”, the 2020 Wagga Wagga Mardi Gras. To register for next year’s festival visit waggamardigras.com/ parade-registration. Meanwhile, Mardi Gras wasn’t the only community event to receive support from Wagga Wagga City Council. Councillors also agreed to provide $15,000 in
sponsorship to the Murrumbidgee Turf Club’s ‘MTC Rocks the Racetrack’ event to be held on 16 November and $5000 to Wagga Harness Racing Club’s ground-breaking, 2020 Group 1 carnival in April 2020. The prestigious program of racing will be the first at Group 1 level for any code in the Riverina and will feature four $100,000 races.

City’s cyclists test Levee Link on opening day From front page “There’s only one downside to this fabulous new shared pathway… it’s definitely going to cost me money,” Councillor Conkey joked. “My bike is about 35 years old… It’s probably about time I bought a new one so I can enjoy this new cycleway even more.” Wagga’s Commuter Cycling Network is the largest cycling infrastructure project currently taking place in New South Wales and is recognised as a crucial project for the city. “This network will not only improve the liveability and accessibility of our city but also play a role in improving health outcomes for members of our community,” Cr Conkey said. “I’m so proud to see this first link opened to the public, and so many families, young people and individuals out here today raring to give it a go.” In more exciting progress, the Red Hill Link in the western section of the network is also nearing completion. The Active Travel Plan is expected to be completed in 2021.

Budding riders will be hitting different tricks, performing new stunts and honing their skills thanks to Wagga Wagga City Council’s exciting upgrade of three BMX tracks across the city. “The new tracks will be so exhilarating that you’ll want to come back and test your skills again and again,” Parks and Recreation Assets Officer Rob Owers said. “You won’t be able to come out and ride flat out straight away. “You’ll have to practice if you want to master the track, especially the steeper jumps.” Council has conducted works at the Yentoo Drive Reserve BMX Track in Glenfield, the Ashmont BMX Track in Webb Park along Blakemore Avenue and O’Halloran Park BMX Jumps in Lake Albert. “We have established similar features along each track as part of the upgrades,” Rob said. “We’ve added two or three berms, three tabletops and one gap jump.” Mr Owers is confident his team has created the ideal line-up of challenges and young riders were itching to follow Rob’s lead and have a crack at the challenging new courses. “We hadn’t even driven out of O’Halloran Park and there were already kids out on the track,” he said.
