network of dedicated cycle paths connecting the city and suburbs. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the announcement is reassuring and Council is now moving ahead quickly to implement the exciting project. “Concrete pours of some sections of the levee link cycle way have started this week,” Cr Conkey said. “Extensive consultation has already been undertaken and the It’s the final step in the planning network design of 10 cycle links and funding approval process, which will see the rollout of a 43km was approved by Council in July 2018.

“Next month, Council will undertake further community consultation, including writing to all residents adjacent to the proposed routes, prior to finalising the detailed design for the cycle infrastructure. “In addition, Council is currently recruiting for a Senior Project Manager to manage the implementation of the project. “I’d like to add that this funding was awarded exclusively to develop the commuter cycling network and cannot be diverted for other uses in the city; hence the

need to seize this opportunity to build a cycle network that will be the envy of many other cities. “Dedicated city-wide cycling and sporting facilities are designed to meet the needs of residents and improve the liveability of the city, as well as attract new visitors to the city for sporting and recreational opportunities.” The five complete cycling networks will link the outer suburbs with the central business area. The locations of safe cycle routes and end-of-trip facilities have been selected following consideration of

Council News - A City of Wagga Wagga publication

‘Smart’ approach to exploring new technology Wagga Wagga City Council will take a unique approach to exploring Smart City infrastructure by bringing together industry leaders and local government representatives at a key event in Sydney. Being a Smart City is using technology and knowledge to improve the liveability of a community and solve problems. Unlike other Smart City events, Council’s will be pitch-based and

focus on proven solutions from technology providers. Importantly, it will allow local governments to bring complex problems to industry to be solved, Economic Development Officer Dominic Kennedy said. “This is an opportunity for Wagga Wagga City Council to take a leadership position and host a solution-focused event,” he said. “Most cities have similar issues that can be solved with

existing technologies and local government leaders are currently exploring how they can adopt Smart City solutions. “Along with presentations by technology and service providers, councils will be able to do a ‘reverse pitch’. This is where a city leader will lay out a complex problem or unique issue and ask the technology providers to propose a solution. “Holding the event in Sydney

allows us to attract a diverse range of councils and vendors in one location to ensure all attendees, including Wagga Wagga, gets the best information to bring back to our communities.” There has been a global focus on Smart City solutions and in Australia the Commonwealth Government has a Smart Cities Plan focused on infrastructure planning and collaboration across all levels of government.

SONGWRITING CL ASS AND MORE IN FRESH WEEK THREE

Fresh 2019 has reached the halfway point, with sold out workshops and events featuring a mix of art, food, culture, sport and more drawing plenty of interest from the community. The Fresh program creatively combines Seniors Festival and Youth Week celebrations into a month-long program of talks, workshops and events for people of all ages and backgrounds. The month-long program rolls on this week into school holidays, with boredom-busting activities for younger people along with events for the wider community. “One of the highlights of week three of Fresh are the songwriting workshops with Alexander Gow of Melbourne band Oh Mercy,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “Oh Mercy were a hit at Fusion last October and Alexander will be holding two songwriting workshops, one of which is specifically for youth. “He is an ARIA-award winning songwriter and will share some of his go-to tools and perspectives to create music. “Week three will also feature French

The key focus areas for Smart City solutions are energy, technology and innovation, sustainability, urban planning and building, mobility, and security. The event is forecast to be costneutral for Council, with revenue from ticket sales, exhibitor fees and sponsorship estimated to cover expenses. There has already been a high level of interest in the event from both local governments and businesses.

Alexander Gow classes, a girls Aussie rules clinic, an artist talk, outdoor movie screening and more. “Check out the website for the full program and experience something new this April.” Printed copies of the Fresh program from the Visitor Information Centre, Wagga City Library, Wagga Art

Gallery, Museum of the Riverina and Civic Theatre. A Re-Fresh program with events hand-picked for over 70s by the Senior Citizens Club of Wagga Wagga is also available. For full event details visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/fresh or call the Visitor Information Centre on 1300 100 122.

Make us an offer we can’t refuse. For the next two weeks, the Wagga Wagga City Council’s impound car yard is open for business. All makes and models have to go, with the 31 vehicles on the lot ranging from small cars to station wagons and utes. Expressions of Interest (EOI) from potential buyers who would like to snap up a cheap second-hand car are open until 5pm, 24 April. “All people need to do is make an offer on the vehicle they are interested in. If they have the highest offer at the end of the EOI period, then the car is theirs,” Manager Environment and City Compliance Mark Gardiner said. All cars are unregistered, have clear titles – meaning it is not under finance – and come with a bill of sale certificate. Purchasers will need to arrange transport for their vehicles as they do not come with keys. It is encouraged

that potential purchasers wanting to register a vehicle organises a mechanical check prior to sale. “If you think you might be interested in one of the cars, check it out on our website, and then head down to the lot at one of the viewing times to see the car first hand,” Mr Gardiner said. “If you are still interested after having a look, then put forward your offer.” Council recently donated some abandoned vehicles to TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga, where they are used by Automotive Refinishing and Body Repair students to develop their panel beating and spray painting skills. Any unsold vehicles suitable for TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga’s needs will again be gifted to the local campus. Vehicles can be viewed from 3pm to 4pm on Tuesday 16 April and Thursday 18 April at 2 Glenfield Road (near the animal shelter). For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/cars.

KIDS ENCOURAGED TO BE SHARPS SMART WITH BOOK A Wagga Wagga City Council educational resource to help local children identify used sharps and understand their dangers is now being promoted and made available through the Visitor Information Centre. A children’s story book was developed and published to help promote the sharps safety message and is now being used by other councils in NSW to help create a safer, sharps-free environment for the community. The publication assists children to understand the actions that need to be

taken when sharps are spotted and is now available for purchase at Wagga’s Visitor Information Centre for $10. Proceeds from the book will go back into the “Be Sharps Smart” awareness program. “This interesting and vibrant book helps children to identify sharps found in open spaces and to step back and notify an adult straight away,” Council's Environmental Health Co-ordinator Sharomi Dayanand said. “It also equips adults with valuable contact numbers so that sharps can

be safely removed by specially trained officers and correctly disposed.” The program was rolled out in September 2017 and was recently recognised at the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards for its ongoing contribution to public safety.
