The new year heralds the start of $700,000 worth of refurbishment work at the iconic Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre. From new seats to new paint and new carpet to a new retractable roof on the balcony, the refurbishment is set to be a showstopper for all patrons. “The Civic Theatre was brought back to life in 1999 when the balcony was added, the auditorium was made accessible and the technical facilities
upgraded,” Manager Civic Theatre Carissa Campbell said. “Since then the theatre has developed into a major performing arts centre with over 140 performances and over 50,000 audience members each year. "After 19 years of use, it needs an upgrade to be a contemporary, beautiful and comfortable space that audiences look forward to coming to." Story continued inside

Maiden matches to bowl city over Women's Big Bash League double-header at Robertson Oval
Just over a week remains until cricket in Wagga Wagga gets hit for six, with the Sydney Thunder taking on the Adelaide Strikers on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January at Robertson Oval. The two teams will take to the field at 2pm, with free admission to both fixtures. “Crowds will be able to watch some excellent sporting talent, including upcoming local talent Rachel Trenaman who recently joined the Thunder, on the iconic Robertson Oval in the heart of the city,” Deputy Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga
Councillor Dallas Tout said. “These are family-friendly events and admission to both games is free, so we’re expecting big crowds and encourage everyone to head down early to grab a great seat.” Each match will involve player signings, the Thunder’s mascot Storm, music, giveaways and the Mazda Thunder Bus where you can test your skills. Food vendors, as well as a licenced bar, will be available at both games. Spectators can catch both teams training

From front page Works as part of the refurbishment include: • New auditorium seating and carpet • New paint, carpet and furniture for the foyers • Permanent wheelchair lift to the stage • Accessible backstage toilet • New retractable roof on the balcony • New balcony furniture “The addition of a permanent lift and an accessible backstage toilet will ensure that everyone can
fully participate in the performing arts and be a part of the theatre. By adding a retractable roof to the balcony it means the space can be used in all weather conditions for events and functions overlooking the beautiful Wollundry Lagoon,” Ms Campbell said. The extensive works means the Civic Theatre is closed until late March, but people can still purchase tickets for the 2018 season shows in the lower foyer,
or by heading online tocivictheatre.com.au. Residents will not have to wait long to see the results of the refurbishment. The Civic Theatre will be holding an open day on Tuesday, 27 March and everyone is invited to come along to try out the new seats and see the refurbishment for themselves. The Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre refurbishment is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council and a $60,000 grant from Create NSW.
