HAVE YOUR SAY: Wagga Wagga City Council Economic Development Officer Dominic Kennedy and Senior Strategic Planner Crystal Golden check over the Health and Knowledge Precinct Master Plan which is now on public exhibition.
Health precinct plan open for feedback A long-term vision to develop and grow a Health and Knowledge Precinct in the city is now open for community discussion after Wagga Wagga City Council approved the concept to go on public exhibition. Council is seeking community feedback on a 20-25 year vision to develop a central activity hub centred around the city’s two major hospitals, Wagga Base and Calvary Riverina. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM said developing a health precinct master plan is one of the first important steps in the planning and consultation process for this long-term
vision. “This is a significant vision for the future of the city and its health services to be developed over the next 20 to 25 years,” Cr Conkey said. “The city can benefit from a planned health precinct to support current and additional medical specialist and health services in the locality. Short-term accommodation, commercial provisions and training and education services are also central to meeting the needs of these services in the city. “The planning process needs to take into consideration the needs of the health industry as well as the general community who live and work in the area. “A precinct is a central activity hub combining mixed-use community areas in which to live, work, study and relax. These areas include parkland and green spaces, street-level retail and dining, learning and innovation spaces, entertainment facilities
and accommodation options.” Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said it is recommended that a steering committee is established to drive this project. “Council would source expertise and available data to articulate the type of services available, development occurring, investment attraction and knowledge required to ensure this precinct is best positioned to perform to its potential,” Mr Kell said. “The Liverpool Health and Innovation Precinct has developed a framework for its Steering Committee, which incorporates a regular roundtable with executive level stakeholders to ensure that collaboration occurs, decisions are made and wellbeing is improved.” Council and the NSW Government’s Department of Planning and Environment have initiated the preparation of a master plan leveraging the current significant

Wagga is geared up to host more top flight Australian footballers this year following a partnership with Sydney FC to play A-League and W-League pre-season games in the city. Wagga City Council gave the go-ahead at its 8 July Ordinary Meeting to enter into an agreement with Sydney FC to play a W-League (women) pre-season game later year and an A-League (men) pre-trial next year. Those dates are to be confirmed. Both matches will be against Newcastle Jets at McDonald’s Park – the same ground which hosted more than 10,000 fans at the highly-successful NRL RaidersPenrith match in Wagga earlier this year.

“Sydney FC is the most successful club in the history of the competition, having won 18 trophies across the A-League, the W-League and National Youth League and FFA Cup competition,” Mr Dobbin said. “It’s an exciting time for football in Wagga, there’s a lot happening. The popularity of football continues to grow and our game can leverage these top level games to keep building the sport’s profile, particularly at the grassroots level. “Both Sydney FC’s men’s and women’s teams are the league’s defending champions … it doesn’t get much better than that. Having W- League here in Wagga reflects the high level of female interest and participation in our sport
locally, regionally and at state and national levels.” Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Danny Townsend said the club had developed a strong relationship with the people of Wagga Wagga and the Riverina over a number of years through holiday clinics and training courses. “It is a fantastic area with a real passion for football so we are delighted to be taking both of our Championship winning sides to play pre-season games there,” Mr Townsend said. “I hope as many people as possible come out and enjoy the occasions and help to continue our developing relationship with the area.”

This year’s theme Voice Treaty and Truth will be central to a community conversation about the importance of Treaty to be held Wednesday 17 July at the CSU
Riverina Playhouse between 11am-12 noon. Guest speaker Aunty Eleanor Bourke is CoChair of the Aboriginal Treaty Working Group and will share the history and progress of the Victorian Treaty. NAIDOC Week started on Monday with the announcement of awards in the Riverina Local Land Services

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
Winter is certainly with us! So if you have seen any problems with roads that have occurred due to weather (or anything else), please call me on
my mobile at any time and we can help start the process of getting it fixed. It may help stop an accident. Also, as the weather is very cold, I am sure that many children and adults need blankets and many warm clothes.
I don’t think that The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul will mind me mentioning that if you can help in any way, they would be happy to take anything you can offer. Graffiti Removal Day 2019 this year is on Sunday 27 October. I
would love your help. We are currently looking to increase participation on the day across NSW and we need you, so just give me a phone call on my mobile. And bring your friends along! I must once again mention the great
0402 214 556 | councillor.braid@wagga.nsw.gov.au assets we have at the Botanic Gardens. You must visit the wonderful zoo and see the lovely animals as well as the great miniature railway. This railway is one of the best in Australia! It is great fun for the little kids to enjoy, and the big kids too!
The miniature railway runs the first and third Sundays of every month at the Botanic Gardens and is only $2.50 a ride. One thing you have to ensure is that everyone is wearing fully enclosed footwear. Don’t forget to round
up all your friends to help on Sunday 27 October as we need Wagga Wagga to be a graffiti-free city. Don’t forget to call me if you can assist.

CYCLING COMPLEX MOVING AHEAD underway, which will thoroughly investigate the cultural significance of the site. “The multisport complex will cater to cycling clubs, community members – both cyclists and noncyclists - in a safe environment away from suburban and main road traffic,” she said. The complex will feature a criterium track, BMX track, jump tracks and pump tracks, a cycling education area, a velodrome, and supporting infrastructure. Funding for the $9.2M Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex comprises a State Government contribution of $6.92M, with Wagga Wagga City Council contributing $2.3M. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2021. Expressions of Interest documentation is available through Tenderlink at wagga.nsw.gov.au

Following months of planning, design and community consultation, the Council has this week advertised an Expression of Interest, the next phase in the project’s development. Director Commercial Operations, Caroline Angel said Council is working closely with stakeholders, including the city’s five cycling groups, to deliver a project that meets the sporting needs of the community as well as incorporating the cultural importance of the site into the proposed complex. “Consultation with local First Nations women will ensure the development is respectful and representative of Pomingalarna’s significance to Wiradjuri cultural heritage,” she said. “A Cultural Heritage Survey is

FUNNY BUSINESS: Wagga comedians Jamie Way (left) and Dane Simpson ham it up after Mr Simpson was appointed guest Artistic Director for Wagga Comedy Fest 2020.
Dane gets comedy fest 2020 gig Local funnyman Dane Simpson is getting serious about his next comedy role in Wagga Wagga. Mr Simpson been named the guest Artistic Director for the 2020 Comedy Fest in Wagga and said he can’t wait to take the popular festival to even greater heights. He said the Comedy Fest will always be one of his favourite gigs which holds a special place in his heart as a launching pad for his stand-up career. “My first comedy performance was at the very first Wagga Comedy Fest in 2015 when I did a ‘fringe gig’. That was only five years ago,” Mr Simpson said. “I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to work closely with the Civic Theatre team and Wagga City Council to make Comedy Fest 2020 an even better week of performances. “The concept of this festival has a great following in Wagga Wagga and we saw from this year’s shows that local people always enjoy their comedy. Everybody enjoys a good laugh and that’s what we want to keep focusing on next year.” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said Mr Simpson was an excellent choice for the position. “Dane is a great local talent with broad experience,” Ms Campbell said. “He is fresh from touring the country with
the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow – that’s a huge accomplishment and we’re sure that experience will filter into the role Dane is going to fill with Comedy Fest 2020 which will result in a quality line-up next year. “He knows the best talent and is working those connections to bring the best and brightest to Wagga between 11-13 June next year.” Ms Campbell said the 2019 Comedy Fest introduced a new audience to the theatre and is adamant Mr Simpson will thrill this new audience and also satisfy the long-standing Wagga comedy fans Riverina audiences will have their first chance to see Dane Simpson’s show Origins for one-night only on 7 September at the Civic Theatre. After sold-out shows around the country, Mr Simpson is back in his first solo show to answer the question: “Where does his comedy comes from?” In the past few years Mr Simpson has been a finalist in the national Deadly Funny competition, has toured to every state and territory of Australia, has starred in the hit stand-up comedy show Aborigi-LOL, has appeared on Have You Been Paying Attention? and had sold out seasons at the 2018 & 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala and the Opening Night All Star Supershow.

Plastic pollution has a detrimental effect on the environment and is commonly found littered in parks, reserves, stormwater infrastructure and waterways. Soft plastics such as plastic bags are widely used, however cannot be recycled through kerbside waste collection services. Only 10 percent of Australians recycle their bags and soft plastics, leaving a large number of plastic either littered in the environment or taking up space in our landfill. Plastic Free July is all about assessing how much plastic is used in our everyday lives and finding alternatives. Participants can take a pledge to avoid all plastics or just the top four including plastic bags, bottles, straws and coffee cups. Wagga Wagga City Council is celebrating Plastic Free July with four sold out workshops

The water is warm, why not bring the kids for a swim this school holidays and take a look? 1 Jumbuck Dr GOBBAGOMBALIN 2650 Lot 360 DP 1236751 DA19/0046 Addition to commercial building 83 Baylis St WAGGA WAGGA 2650 Lot 4 DP 20273 DA19/0091.01 Dwelling amendment to location of retaining walls on site plan and addition of rock retaining wall along the eastern boundary. 5 Nolan St LLOYD 2650 Lot 705 DP 1242827 DA19/0148 Use of Existing Retaining Wall and Associated Fill, Hardstand Area (Basketball Court) and Fence 1 Correa Pl SPRINGVALE 2650 Lot 11 DP 1055802 DA19/0156 Dwelling and Farm Building 343 Mitchell Rd LAKE ALBERT 2650 Lot 1 DP 1220317 DA19/0166 Use of existing verandah 44 Rosevale Dr LAKE ALBERT 2650 Lot 12 DP 248065 DA19/0169 Constuction of new Patio in R1 Zone (replacement of existing one) 20 Buchhorn St TOLLAND 2650 Lot 38 DP 249959 DA19/0181 Three Lot Residential Subdivision 119 Elizabeth Ave FOREST HILL 2651 Lot 1400 DP 1243790 DA19/0192 Demolition of five dwellings 18, 20, 22, 24 & 26 Goonigul Ave WAGGA WAGGA 2650 Lot 2 DP 12581, Lot 3 DP 12581, Lot 4 DP 12581, Lot 5 DP 12581, Lot 6 DP 12581 DA19/0196 Dual Occupancy 19 Pimelea Pl SPRINGVALE 2650 Lot 14 DP 1218487 DA19/0203 Shed 52 Peppermint Dr SPRINGVALE 2650 Lot 67 DP 1073172 DA19/0207 Change of use to transport depot 9 Schiller St EAST WAGGA WAGGA 2650 Lot 1 DP 1070687 DA19/0208 Additions and alterations to dwelling 83 Crampton St WAGGA WAGGA 2650 Lot 8 DP 12439 DA19/0210 Shade structures on existing carpark 317 Edward St WAGGA WAGGA 2650 Lot 8 DP 1071590 DA19/0212 Deck 55 Balmoral Cres LAKE ALBERT 2650 Lot 215 DP 250617 DA19/0213 Alterations and Additions to existing dwelling
