STORY INSIDE
A more accessible CBD
People living with a disability will soon have improved access to Wagga Wagga’s main shopping area with the creation of 21 new disabled parking spaces. The Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) will increase disabled parking spaces along Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets and in a number of off streets, such as Church and Fitzhardinge streets. The length of some of the parking spaces will be extended, up to 12 metres, allowing extra room for vehicles to park and operate rear-mounted lift devices. Works will also be carried out on existing disabled parking spaces to better align them with current standards. Once the MPS is complete, the number of disabled parking spaces in the city’s main shopping area will be more than double the existing spaces, taking it from 15
to 36 spaces. “It’s important we cater for the needs of everyone that lives or visits our city,” Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline Angel said. “After talks with the community it was recognised that the number of vehicles in the city with rear wheelchair access is increasing, as are the number of visits to the city by community transport vehicles.” To accommodate some of the new MPS spaces, some spaces will be changed to disabled parking only. “To make way for the MPS upgrade, the use of 13 car spaces in Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets will be changed to disabled parking only,” Ms Angel said. “However, numerous parking options will still remain in the city centre, including more than 1300 on-street car parking spaces, as

well as 20 car parks and four major private/shopping centre car parks, all offering a mix of timed and allday parking.” Works on the MPS are expected to start in the coming weeks. Increased accessible parking in the city centre is one of a number of actions identified in the City of Wagga Wagga’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 20172021. “Providing the additional parking spaces will help all people better access our public spaces and places, which is another step towards improving liveability and making our city more inclusive,” Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes said. The draft DIAP is on public exhibition for community to make suggestions or provide feedback until May 24. Visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/diap.
MOBILITY PARKING SCHEME KEY POINTS: • Increase the number of disabled parking spaces in the central shopping area to 36 spaces in 25 locations • Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets will have 16 disabled parking spaces in 11 locations • Side streets, such as Peter, Church and Fitzhardinge streets, will have 20 disabled parking spaces available in 14 locations • Ramps, or appropriate footpath access, installed on all MPS spaces. Some existing spaces to have works carried out to better align with current standards • Increase in MPS spaces will better align with the number of disabled parking permit holders in the city • Length of some parking spaces will be increased, up to 12 metres, to allow room to load/unload passengers from vehicles with rearmounted lift devices • A total of 13 car spaces in Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets will be changed to disabled parking only • Changed traffic conditions may apply during installation/works • Private car parks, such as shopping centres, are outside of the City of Wagga Wagga’s control. Staff will continue to liaise with centre management or owners when appropriate • Total cost for Mobility Parking Scheme is $66,000 (including works on existing spaces and installation of new spaces)

Egg-cellent idea made possible by grants Kapooka Happy Hens is a cracking example of how funding from the City of Wagga Wagga’s Annual Grants program can go a long way. The Kapooka Early Childhood Centre built a custom-made home for their laying hens using a $1263 grant from the Sustainable
Environments section of the 2016/17 Annual Grants Program. The centre’s Donna Worner says they have always kept pet chickens, but the grant allowed them to embark on a new project to keep laying hens. “It’s a great opportunity for
the children to experience agricultural and animal husbandry on a small scale, and it also teaches them about implementing environmentally sustainable living practices.” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM had the honour of cutting the ribbon
at the launch and said the City was proud to support the initiative. “Kapooka Happy Hens is a fantastic initiative and from all the smiling faces I can see that it leads to happy children as well as hens,” he said. “It’s great to see such
a practical, creative and educational use of Annual Grants funding and I encourage all community groups across the local government area to think about how they might be able to use a similar grant and to apply.” The hens were donated by the Riverina Game Poultry
Club and Doug Millwood donated his time to build the coop. Applications for this year’s round of Annual Grants closes on 29 May so sit down with your community group and brainstorm some ideas. wagga.nsw.gov.au/ grants
ACCESS SESSION ON MONDAY This month’s Public Access Session and Public Forum – Development Assessment and Policy will be held on Monday 15 May from 5.30pm in the Council Meeting Room. Both the forum and the access session will be cancelled if no speakers are registered and you can follow the City of Wagga Wagga on social media for updates. Oura Beach's natural beauty captured by new artwork Three new seats have been installed at Oura Beach, but they aren’t your average park benches. Titled Ageless Oura and hand crafted by Wagga Wagga artist John Wood these hardwood timber seats are framed by rust coloured steel rings that blend beautifully into the landscape. Impressive to look at, the artworks also create viewing frames for the natural wonder that is the mighty Murrumbidgee River. “In designing Ageless Oura I have purposely tried not to rival the natural beauty of the reserve through the use of organic lines, but instead have designed a functional geometric sculptural art work that will offer focal points, framed views and lasting memories of the Murrumbidgee River,” Mr Wood said. The artwork was designed in consultation with the Oura Progress Association and is flood appropriate. The project cost $25,000 and was funded by the City of Wagga Wagga’s Public Art Plan. The Public Art Plan is currently under review. You can be a part of the review by registering to the Your Say Wagga website and filling out the survey before 24 May.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN A big happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow to all the mothers in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area! I was very lucky to be able to attend the Australian Local Government Women’s Association 2017 NSW
Conference in Penrith on 4 to 6 May. A very interesting and informative presentation was given by Donna Rygate, Chief Executive Local Government NSW, and Jo Grisard, Consultant Local Government NSW, talking about a new capability framework being developed for local government in NSW. This will certainly be of benefit to all councils
in NSW including our community. Of course there were many other very good programs and workshops throughout the conference that will help me in the future. It is getting worse! Yes, I am bringing to your attention graffiti. The more I drive around the more I see. Please, if you see anyone or know of
