night works set to begin The third stage in resurfacing one of Wagga Wagga’s main arterial roads will begin next week, weather permitting. As part of the Lake Albert Road Rehabilitation – Stage 3, a 1.6-kilometre stretch of the road between Warrawong Street and Stanley Street will be resurfaced in two sections, with night works between Fay Avenue and Stanley Street scheduled to start on Tuesday 16 November. Night works on the section between Lord Baden Powell Drive and Warrawong Street are expected to begin at the end of the month. See story on page 2.
Raiders to return to Wagga Wagga in 2022 Wagga Wagga City Council and Canberra Raiders’ commitment to bring the National Rugby League back to the city next year was this week confirmed with the 2022 NRL draw including a premiership game at McDonald’s Park next season. The Raiders will play a round 5 home game against Melbourne Storm in Wagga Wagga on Saturday 9 April 2022, kicking off at 3pm. Tickets will go on sale early next year. Mayor of the City of Wagga
Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM said the Raiders’ commitment to bring their third game in four years to Wagga Wagga was a strong reflection of the partnership the club and the city have forged in recent times. “We had to call off the 2020 fixture due to the uncertainty of the pandemic and whilst this year’s game successfully went ahead, there were limited numbers allowed at the ground due to restrictions,” Cr Conkey said. “Full marks to the Raiders and the NRL for sticking with the regions in 2022, and in particular Wagga Wagga. We want to see a capacity crowd next year and to have that happen against the Storm will be a

huge coup for our city. “Our facilities are top notch … we have done this a few times now and our people, working alongside the Raiders, know how to put on a top show for all residents and visitors who converge on the city for this muchanticipated sporting spectacle. “This is just what we needed after a tough couple of years due to the pandemic.” The game is scheduled for the week before Easter and will be on the first weekend of the NSW school holidays, giving rugby league supporters every opportunity to plan an extended stay in the region. See story on page 2.

City to host Raiders v Storm NRL clash From page 1. Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the club is looking forward to returning to Wagga Wagga and rewarding their many Riverina supporters with an NRL game in their own backyard. “We all know it’s been a tough couple of years for everyone and we’re sticking to our commitment to bring one of our games to Wagga,” Mr Furner said.
“Everyone needs a morale boost as we come out of restrictions and hopefully we can play our part in that recovery, giving the city a significant event to look forward to as part of the strong relationship we've developed with the region. “A game against the Storm doesn’t get much better … it should be a great game at a great venue
in front of a great crowd. “We will be encouraging all of our Canberra-based members to travel out to Wagga, support the Raiders and make a weekend of it.” Tickets for the match will go on sale early next year. Council will keep the public updated on when and how tickets can be purchased.

LAKE ALBERT ROAD UPGRADE ON TRACK From page 1. Wagga Wagga City Council Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said preliminary works on the two 800-metre long sections began in October. “We have completed the kerb and gutter works between Fay Avenue and Stanley Street, so it will be the first section to be resurfaced,” Mr Faulkner said. “This will involve removing the existing pavement by milling it out and replacing it with a new thick layer of asphalt. “We’re still carrying out kerb and gutter repairs and concreting of the parallel parking bays between Lord Baden Powell Drive and Warrawong Street. Once that is finished, we will begin the resurfacing phase on that section.
“Depending on weather conditions, it is expected each 800-metre section of night works will take two weeks, which would see Stage 3 completed before Christmas.” The $4.8 million project is being funded via a $3.6 million grant from the State Government and $1.2 million from Council. Council has engaged Fulton Hogan contractors to undertake the pavement rehabilitation works. During the works, Lake Albert Road will be closed to through traffic at the roadworks site between the hours 6pm to 6am, with no work to occur on Saturday nights. Vehicle access for residents and emergency services within the roadworks will be made available. “We’re undertaking these
road works at night to minimise inconvenience to road users and surrounding residents and for the safety of construction staff working on the site,” Mr Faulkner said. “There will be some noise associated with this work, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact to the residents. “We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate the patience of residents and road users.” The road will be reopened to traffic during the day, with a reduced speed limit in place. Road users are asked to drive to the conditions. For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/projects and follow the link to the Lake Albert Road Rehabilitation – Stage 3 project.

Monograph of accomplished Australian artist launched at Art Gallery Wagga Wagga Art Gallery will host the monograph launch of ‘David Green - Revisiting yesterday arriving tomorrow’ today (Saturday 13 November). The book, published by Wagga Wagga author Dr Neill Overton, covers the astounding artistic career of David Green through interviews, images and a biography. Green is a former leading Charles Sturt University academic, and was the
Professor of Visual Arts, Head of School and Campus across the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wagga Wagga Art Gallery Curator Andrew Halyday said Green’s international art career included a major retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery in 2017, with the monograph showcasing this work. “Professor Green is a prominent figure who played a major role across the local and wider arts community, inspiring his own artistic career,”
Mr Halyday said. “It will be wonderful to revisit the memories of the 2017 exhibition held at the Gallery.” The launch event also includes an artist talk with David Green, hosted by Dr Overton, at 11am. The monograph will be on sale from Saturday in the Art Gallery Shop. The event is free, but bookings are essential and can be made by visiting waggaartgallery. com.au/programs
How do you want our mayor to be elected?
At this year’s Local Government election, voters in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area will be asked to decide whether they want to change the way our mayor is selected. The question, known as a constitutional referendum, will appear on a separate ballot paper at the Saturday 4 December 2021 elections. Currently, the mayor is selected by councillors every two years. Council’s Manager Governance & Risk Ingrid Hensley said the referendum will ask if voters want to elect the mayor themselves, rather than sitting councillors.
“You’ll be asked to vote yes or no, and voting is compulsory,” Ms Hensley said. “If most people vote yes, voters in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area will elect the mayor for a four-year term, starting from the 2024 Local Government elections. “If most people vote no, the mayor will continue to be elected every two years by the councillors. “Either way, Council will continue to have nine councillors.” Ms Hensley said there were pros and cons for either option. “Moving to a popularly-elected mayor would give residents an
opportunity to consider mayoral candidates' policies and vote accordingly,” Ms Hensley said. “Holding a separate mayoral election each election day will, however, add to the cost of the elections.” The additional costs are due to mayoral elections requiring the management of a separate set of nominations and ballot papers, separate counts at each polling place and returning office, and a separate distribution of preferences process. The NSW Electoral Commission estimates the cost of a popularly elected mayor will be approximately $47,000 per election, which will
increase as the number of voters in Wagga Wagga grows and election costs increase. “We’ve included more information as well as some reasons why you might vote either way on Council’s website,” Ms Hensley said. “Our aim is for the community to be able to make an informed decision before election day.” Read more at wagga. nsw.gov.au/elections If you have an enquiry please email election2021@wagga. nsw.gov.au or call 1300 292 442. COUNCIL IN VITING SUBMISSIONS FOR GOL F CEN TR E L ICENCE The opportunity to secure a licence to operate a golfing facility in central Wagga Wagga is now available to businesses or other interested parties. Wagga Wagga City Council will open the Expressions of Interest (EOI) process for the Wiradjuri Golf Centre in Narrung Street on Saturday 13 November, with submissions closing at 3pm on Friday 3 December. The overall site has an area of 11 hectares and is located approximately 1km to the north of the Fitzmaurice Street retail precinct in the city centre. The immediate location includes the Wiradjuri Reserve, Marrambidya Wetland and the Wiradjuri Trail, all situated along the Murrumbidgee River. Council’s Director Regional Activation Michael Keys said the licence opportunity was a chance to take an established business to the next level. “The golf facility is centrally located amongst some of the most popular entertainment and recreational areas of the city,” Mr Keys said. “This is a popular facility with families and the golfing community. It presents an opportunity for a business or individual to come in, make it their
own and promote the centre as a destination for healthy living and sporting activity.” The licensed facility comprises a purpose-built golf facility that includes an 18-hole ‘pitch and putt’ golf course, 15 lane driving range, practice putting green, machinery shed and landscaped surrounds. The prospective licensee will be required to provide facilities to service the site as the existing building has reached the end of its useful life and will be demolished prior to commencement of the licence agreement. Mr Keys said that all submissions will be welcomed and assessed against key criteria including the future vision for proposed use and programs to be offered to the community and how the community in general will benefit from the utilisation of the space. EOI documentation will be available via Council’s community engagement website with submissions closing on Friday 3 December 2021 at 3pm. For more information and to view the submission form go to connect. wagga.nsw.gov.au/wiradjurigolf or contact Council’s Economic Development Officer, Phillip Thompson, on 1300 292 442.

Check your caravan’s safety before hitting the road The easing of restrictions for regional travel has seen a significant rise in the number of caravans back on the roads as holidaymakers make the most of domestic getaways across the state. Wagga Wagga City Council Road Safety Officer Emma Reynolds said the popularity of caravanning has grown 30 per cent since the pandemic started, a statistic which has also increased the potential for more unsafe vehicles on the roads. “Towing a caravan takes more concentration than driving your car as your vehicle becomes much heavier, wider, longer and taller,” Mrs Reynolds said. “It’s harder to move and much harder to stop – so allow extra time and space for all manoeuvres, including overtaking and turning corners.
“Issues with speed and load are common causes of crashes, which often start with a swaying vehicle and that could end with a rollover.” Caravan owners in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area are being offered an opportunity to have their van and vehicle weighed before heading off on their travels. Council is giving away a limited number of vouchers for a Free Caravan Towing Vehicle Check. An approved weighbridge station authorised representative will inform owners of: • Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) • Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) • Combined Vehicle Mass (GCM) To enter the draw for a free safety check voucher, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/caravansafety
