Green acre
The grass really is greener on the other side thanks to Wagga Wagga City Council’s annual rye grass oversow program. In the lead up to the football season, Council staff have aerated, seeded and fertilised 17 hectares of sportsgrounds across Wagga Wagga. A few weeks after the over-sowing, the grounds are lush and green and ready for the many codes of footy played in the City of Good Sports over winter. Continued inside

First look at 2018 comedy fest The first taste of the Wagga Comedy Fest 2018 line up has been revealed ahead of the annual June event. Now in its fourth year, the Wagga Comedy Fest has brought some of the country’s funniest people to the city. The 2018 line up will feature headliners Dave Hughes and the double trouble of comediennes Judith Lucy and Denise Scott who will bring their show Disappointments.
Also announced are Nazeem Hussein, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, Dane Simpson and Dane Kennedy, and Completely Improvised Potter. “We’re putting the finishing touches on the Wagga Comedy Fest 2018 and will announce the full line up soon,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said. “The six shows announced this week are a real mix of Australian comedy royalty and emerging talent. “We’re looking to build on the success of last year’s festival, which featured some great comedians
as well as night markets, free entertainment and some other diverse shows. “Tickets for the six announced acts are on sale now – so get in early and keep an eye out for the full line up when it’s announced in the coming weeks.” More than 4000 people attended last year’s festival, which featured the now infamous performance by Wil Anderson, as well as the Doug Anthony All Stars, Fiona O’Loughlin, Rhys Nicolson and more. Of the 2018 festival revealed so far, Dave Hughes is a household name through his years of stand
up, television and radio shows, while Nazeem Hussain has just finished a string of performances around the globe and a trip to the African jungle with I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here!. Disappointments with Denise Scott and Judith Lucy won the People’s Choice Award at the 2017 Melbourne Comedy Festival. The festival’s comedy roadshow will also be heading to Wagga Wagga, bringing comedians Andy Saunders, Bev Killick, Bob Franklin, Daniel Fernandes and Nath Valvo. Fresh from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival stage for his show Aborigi-LOL, Dane Simpson will combine with
musician Dane Kennedy and no doubt the locals will poke fun at Wagga Wagga. Completely Improvised Potter create their own Harry Potter story based on audience suggestions, so grab your brooms and wands for some whacky wizardry and witchcraft. Follow the Civic Theatre on Facebook or sign up for the newsletter to find out the rest of the Wagga Comedy Fest 2018 when it is announced. WELCOME NE WS FOR MARR AMBIDYA WE T L AND drinking fountain • Bicycle station “Marrambidya Wetland is already a key attraction within the city, and this funding will allow it to be transformed into an even greater tourism destination that once complete will receive around 7000 visitors each year,” Mayor of City of Wagga Wagga Greg Conkey said. It is anticipated the new welcome hub and facilities at the wetland will be completed by the end of June. The grant funding comes from the Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program, a Commonwealth funded initiative administered by the State Government to support tourism projects that drive demand and increase local tourism expenditure.
Wagga Wagga City Council has received a grant of $102,181 from the NSW Government to build a new welcome hub and cultural experience at the Marrambidya Wetland. The funding, which has been matched by Council, will allow for the development of: • Six storytelling and interpretive technology devices to be installed at the wetland as well as along the Wiradjuri Walking Track. These will provide examples of Wiradjuri language through an interpretive soundscape visitor experience, stories of Wiradjuri culture told by local Elders and noises from local animals • Seating and tables • Aquafil refill station and

Sports fields ready for footy after over-sowing From front page “Over-sowing the couch and kikuyu grass with rye grass makes sure we have a strong, durable playing surface better suited to the heavy use during winter,” Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton said. “Over-sowing with rye grass also protects the couch/kikuyu so it’s in good condition when summer rolls around. Couch/kikuyu become the dominant grasses in the warmer months and it’s better for sports like cricket, whereas rye grass is winter active and provides a more even surface for football.” The over-sow program started on 19 February and the last field was completed on 26 March. The last field sown will be available for play on 27 April, while those that were over-sown

Footpath upgrades step forward Pedestrians can enjoy a better connected footpath network, as Wagga Wagga City Council continues to roll out a million dollars’ worth of footpath upgrades across the city. Council has recently completed new footpaths along Raye and Ramus Streets in Tolland, improving access to Red Hill Public School, as well as a new footpath along Fernleigh Road from Hely Avenue to Glenfield Road. This week work began to construct a new footpath along Cypress Street in Forest Hill and along Mima Street in Glenfield.
Over the coming months, footpath upgrades will continue across Forest Hill and Glenfield, before workers move on to Kooringal and Mount Austin. “We would like to thank residents for their patience as Council delivers a number of new footpaths across the city in order to create a more accessible and better connected footpath network,” Manager Project Operations Bruce Sheridan said. Letters will be sent to residents who are impacted prior to works commencing, detailing specific locations of works, works to be completed
and project timeframes. The completed and planned works align with important documents within Council’s planning framework, including the Community Strategic Plan 2040 – Wagga View and Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017–2021. As per Council’s recently updated engineering guidelines, new footpaths will be 1.5 metres wide to allow sufficient space for pedestrians and/or permitted wheeled devices, such as mobility scooters or prams, to pass side-by-side. Where necessary pram ramps will also be installed.
