CITY OF WAGGA WAGGA
Weekly information from us to you
FIRST PRINTED SATURDAY 14 JANUARY 2017
WHAT IS RESEALING? Resealing is a common preventative road maintenance technique where a new coat of bitumen and stone/aggregate is applied over an existing surface. It extends the life of roads by: • Increasing the surface texture for better tyre friction • Sealing cracks in the existing surface to protect the pavement beneath from moisture • Preventing the existing surface from further oxidisation (UV degradation) • Maintains the surface to a good condition
PREVENTION : Geofabric is laid down on Urana Street on Friday morning as part of Council’s annual road reseal program. FINISHED PRODUCT (inset): Coleman Street was the first road completed in the reseal program earlier this week.
Resealing program under way About 180,000 square metres of local roads are being resealed as part of annual preventative maintenance works, which began this week. The City of Wagga Wagga undertakes its reseal program throughout summer and early spring each year with parts of Fernleigh Road, Lake Albert Road, Docker Street and Kincaid Street among the 17 to be resealed. Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark said resealing is a vital part of Council’s maintenance program.
“A road reseal is where a new layer of stone and bitumen is applied over the existing surface, which helps keep moisture out of the road base and increases friction for car tyres,” he said. “Without preventative maintenance like resealing, the life of the road is greatly reduced and it’s more likely to produce potholes and other defects.” The first half of the annual resealing program has been scheduled for January, with dates dependent on contractor availability and weather conditions. The remainder of the program will be scheduled following the completion of stage one. Traffic conditions throughout the city will change during the reseal program

for both the works and preparation works, including road closures and partial road closures “We ask motorists to take care while the works are taking place and there may be some minor traffic delays due to the partial lane closures,” Mr Shoemark said. “There will also be some loose stones following the works as the aggregate needs two to three weeks to lock into place after a reseal. “A street sweeper will return to the reseal sites after this period to remove any remaining loose stone.” For full details on changes to traffic conditions during the reseal program, visit www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads.
ANNUAL RESEAL PROGRAM Stage one schedule: • 10-11 January: Coleman Street • 12 January: Flinders Street, Johnston Street • 13 January: Urana Street • 14 January: Faye Avenue (road closure) • 15-16 January: Chaston Street (road closure) • 17-18 January: Fernleigh Rd (road closure)

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST EXTENDED
Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Expressions of interest have been extended for a number of City of Wagga Wagga’s Advisory Committees. Applications close at 5pm, 20 January for the Sister City Community Committee, Museum of the Riverina Community Committee and Public Art Advisory Panel. The Museum of the Riverina committee allows the community and other key stakeholders to participate in the setting of future directions in accordance with the
role of the museum within the strategic goals of the Council. Wagga Wagga has three Sister Cities in the US, China and Germany, with the community committee working to foster those relationships and plan exchanges. The Public Art Advisory Panel provides expert advice and contributes to public art project management from commissioning artists to the completion and public launch of artworks. To apply for a committee, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au and download an Expression of Interest form.

WITH THANKS: Wagga woman Erin Hulm is thanked by Riverina Regional Library Executive Director Robert Knight for her recent donation of 600 books to the RRL network.
Neighbour’s novel idea boosts Riverina Regional Library Erin Hulm had a novel idea when she realised the Riverina Regional Library (RRL) was going to be her new neighbour. The RRL recently moved into a new administration centre in Galing Place after outgrowing their home in Peter Street. One day in October, Mrs Hulm, who lives just a few doors up, rang the RRL doorbell offering up a donation of surplus books she had after closing her online bookstore.
Blown away by Mrs Hulm’s generosity, RRL staff went to view the books, and, were pleasantly surprised. “Staff were greeted with a pristine collection of almost 600 new paperback and hardback books, including classics, popular fiction and non-fiction titles,” RRL Executive Director Robert Knight said. “The books were allocated across the RRL network with 218 replacement titles for copies
held at RRL libraries – which gives branches the chance to spend their budgets on new titles rather than replacing this popular, well borrowed stock. “Almost 60 titles were used as replacements for the RRL Book Club and every RRL branch, including our smallest libraries, received the remaining titles. “RRL is extremely grateful to have received this generous donation from Erin. We really can’t thank her enough.”

A ‘FINE’ WAY TO HEL P O T HERS
The Wagga Wagga City Library has waived about $5000 in fines and filled more than 30 boxes with food donated by its members to the Salvation Army. The annual Food For Fines program allows library members to donate non-perishable food items in December and in return the library wipes their slate clean of any overdue items. It was the 13th year the campaign has been held and helps stock up the Salvation Army’s pantry following the busy holiday season.
