Cultural learning at Marrambidya Wetland
Locals and visitors have new opportunities to experience Wiradjuri culture, nature and Wagga Wagga’s history at the purpose-built Marrambidya Wetland Welcome Hub and Cultural Experience. Significant development works at Marrambidya Wetland were completed by Wagga Wagga City Council at the end of June and are now open for visitors to experience the wetlands and follow a selfguided tour every day of the year. These new works augment the existing infrastructure Council
developed at the 20-hectare site which includes visitor amenities, walking tracks, viewing platform, bird hides, a healing place and undercover education centre. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator, Fiona Hamilton said the Marrambidya Wetland project was developed by Council who provided matched funds to support a $90,000 Commonwealth-funded initiative administered by the NSW Government. Green light for cycling network routes Wagga Wagga City Council’s plan for a network of cycle ways is a step closer to realisation after Monday night’s Council meeting.
another step forward in the development of the State Government funded 43km network of cycle paths which will soon crisscross the city. “The decision by Council to back the 10 key links is a positive step forward for the city and will go a long way enhance the liveability and attractiveness of the city,” he said. Council approved the 10 cycle links “In its essence the Active Travel Plan is that form the five strategic cycling routes about giving residents another viable option recommended for the Wagga Wagga Active to safely travel from their home to work, Travel Plan. school and shops. The added bonus is that According to Mayor of the City of Wagga cycling is healthy, it’s cost effective and good Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, it’s for the environment too.
“I’d like to extend a big thank you to the community for their input during this consultation process. “Over 250 formal submissions were received in addition to feedback noted at meetings and drop-in sessions with the community and stakeholder groups, which all helps make the $11.7M project a more beneficial initiative for everyone.” “The majority of feedback supported the project and the concerns raised by residents have been incorporated into the revised routes and planning process which is due to begin later this month.
“Ongoing consultation will occur with residents adjacent to the routes during the detailed design and construction phases of the project.” The next step in the project is for the recommended links to be presented to the NSW State Government as a part of the project assurance review process. In January Council received more than $11 million from the State Government to undertake the design and implementation of the Active Travel Plan. A condition of the funding is that the project be completed by June 2020.

Countdown to inclusive play at Livvi’s Place
With the landscaping in place, paths formed, fences erected and play equipment set to be installed this month, it won’t be long before Livvi’s Place playground at Bolton Park rings out with the sounds of happy children. The completed project will be a state-of-the-art playground for people of all abilities to play sideby-side on the same equipment, ensuring full integration of children and families with differences. Leila Bright, the parent of Mia Bright (4), said it’s important for Mia to feel a part of the community and to play alongside all people, regardless of ability. “Likewise, all kids benefit from playing together; they learn to accept differences and respect everyone,” she said. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said the playground will be ready for the community to enjoy a springtime swing by September 2018. “Anyone who walks along Morgan St past the Bolton Park
site can see construction is progressing very well; the trees and shrubs are in, the undercover BBQ area is underway and the shade sails go up soon,” he said. “It’s a world-class playground and a testament to the vision of the national charity Touched by Olivia Foundation, who partnered with Wagga Wagga City Council in this project. “The State Government deserves recognition for contributing $400,000 to the project which is purpose designed so that play spaces are accessible for everyone in our community,” he said. The design of Livvi’s Place was guided by principles of Universal Design and was developed in consultation with local children, people with disabilities and their families and carers. The playground is collaboratively funded by the State Government, Wagga Wagga City Council, Northcott Wagga Wagga and Teys Australia. NEW EXPERIENCE AT WETL AND Continued from front “Local Wiradjuri Elders contributed their time and knowledge to help boost the Marrambidya Wetland site into a learning hub and leisure space for locals and visitors to the region. “The stories of local Wiradjuri Elders Aunty Kath Withers, James Ingram and Wiradjuri man Mark Saddler relating to Wiradjuri history, the flora and fauna at the site, and its cultural significance can be heard at six storytelling stations installed throughout the wetland and along the adjoining Wiradjuri Track. “The funding has allowed us to really improve the visitor experience to the wetland, we’ve installed seating, picnic tables, a water refill station, extra footpaths and a bicycle repair station because we know a lot of people like to cycle to Marrambidya. “In addition, six
largescale artworks by Aunty Kath Withers have been installed, creating a distinctive welcome experience along the walk from the carpark to the wetland entrance. Marrambidya holds a special place for Aunty Kath and we are thrilled to feature her works for visitors to enjoy.” Aunty Kath Withers, who grew up around the wetland said it’s important for everyone to learn about Aboriginal culture as Australia’s first culture. “I feel the spirits of Wiradjuri country welcoming our people, and the Marrambidya Wetland Welcome Hub & Cultural Experience will welcome all visitors and help them understand the significance of the area,” she said. Located off Narrung Street, the wetland has links to the Wiradjuri Reserve, Wilks Park and the Riverside Precinct via the Wiradjuri Walking Track.

C AN YOU LIVE WITHOUT PL ASTIC?
Participants at this month’s “Plastic Free July” workshops embraced the challenge to consider minimising plastic use in their everyday lives. As an alternative to single-use plastic, Waste Education & Communications Officer, Alice Kent (pictured) taught 20 community members at a 90-minute workshop how to make reusable beeswax wraps. The wraps are an environmentally-friendly food storage alternative to disposable cling film. Pantry Pamper is another workshop this month which explains how to simplify beauty regimes with easy recipes using common ingredients found in a kitchen pantry. Spaces are available for the 2 to 3.30pm Pantry Pamper session on Wednesday 18 July. Find out more at wagga.nsw.gov.au/enviroevents

There is just one week left for residents to have their say in the development of the Wagga Wagga Major Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan. “The objective of the Major Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is to develop an overall floodplain risk management plan for the study area that addresses the existing, future and continuing flood problems,” Council’s Lead Engineer - Water and Waste Assets, Shaula Siregar said. “The type of flooding this particular study is looking at is known as overland flow. Unlike
riverine flooding, which is caused by water coming out of the Murrumbidgee River, this current study is concerned with excess runoff caused by local rainfall that drains towards the river through the various major drainage systems. “This happens when a significant amount of flow leaves a designated flow path, such as Dukes Creek, Stringybark Creek, Crooked Creek, Glenfield Drain, Marshalls Creek and Gregadoo Creek. “This study is not intended to address small-scale local drainage issues on an individual property basis, or nuisance
ponding in roadways or gardens, but rather is focused on improving management of the city’s major drainage systems to minimise the impacts of overland flooding that may otherwise result in danger to personal safety and property damage. “I would encourage all residents to share their knowledge and provide input into the study and have their concerns and ideas heard.” Complete the survey online at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/ floodfutures or pick up a hard copy at the Civic Centre Customer Service Desk before Friday 20 July.

•••• It never ceases to amaze me the depth of talent we have in this city. Last weekend was another great example. On Friday night I had the pleasure of attending Kooringal High School’s production of “Seussical the Musical” and on Saturday night Kildare Catholic College’s “Share the Love” variety performance.
Wow. I just can’t speak highly enough of the enthusiasm and the talent of the young performers, the musicians and the back of house production people. Each year Sydney hosts the NSW Schools Spectacular and I believe it is something Wagga Wagga schools could consider.
