Guide to attract business events and conferences to the city Wagga Wagga City Council launched a new guide promoting our city and region as an ideal event and conference location this week.
The Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Business Event and Conference Guide, produced every two years, showcases the diversity and quality of venues and experiences on offer in our city for the corporate event and wedding markets. Visitor Economy Development Officer Kimberly Parker said our city’s location with easy airport, road and rail access along with our range of venues and
depth of accommodation make it an ideal venue for organisers looking to stage a successful event. “We’re perfectly situated between Sydney and Melbourne, close to Canberra, and our city and wider region have so many experiences that organisers can take advantage of to make their event truly memorable,” Ms Parker said. The latest edition of the guide builds on the city’s existing reputation as a leading regional events destination and includes a new itinerary section, detailing the wide variety of experiences on offer in our city and wider region. Business events and conferences provide an opportunity for delegates to step outside their regular workday and learn or participate in something

Night works to upgrade Dobney Avenue are almost complete, with the final seal to be laid early next week, weather permitting. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said adverse weather conditions have delayed the planned completion of the Dobney Avenue works. “We planned to have Dobney Avenue finished this week but, due to the rain, the finished surface works have had to be pushed out to next week,” Mr Faulkner said. “Work to apply a 45-millimetre asphalt overlay over the entire street, which provides a smooth wearing course, will recommence on Monday night (16 May). “Aside from line marking, the road will be completed by
Thursday 19 May.” Work to upgrade Pearson Street will commence following completion of the Dobney Avenue pavement works. “We will begin at the Edward Street end of Pearson Street and progress towards the roundabouts outside Bunnings,” Mr Faulkner said. “Once crews start working on Pearson Street, traffic will be detoured via Dobney Avenue.” Works will take place at night between 6pm and 6am to minimise the impact on traffic. The roads will be reopened to traffic during the daytime. “So far the nightworks seem to have caused minimal disruption to road users and, as each night is completed, a vastly improved road surface is very visible.
“Rehabilitation on these busy and worn roads will not only provide motorists with a smoother and safer ride, but it will decrease wear and tear on vehicles as well as improve drainage.” Work, including the rehabilitation of the pavement at the two roundabouts at the intersection of Pearson Street and Dobney Avenue, is expected to be completed by mid-June, weather permitting. The $5.6 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government in association with the NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council. Dunns Road Stage 1 upgrade update Earthworks on Stage 1 of the Dunns Road upgrade, which started earlier this month, are progressing but are being affected by inclement weather and the impact of COVID-19 on supply and staffing. Wagga Wagga City Council Director Projects Silas Darby is confident that despite these impacts the completion of Stage 1 will occur in December 2022. The first stage of the upgrade involves three phases. Phase 1 – Upgrading of the stormwater drainage. This work has been completed ahead of the program to minimise the damage to the road caused by expected high rainfall events. COMPLETED Phase 2 – Earthworks which started in early May 2022 and involve removing existing top layers
of the road and then replacing these layers using GPS enabled graders. UNDERWAY Phase 3 – Sealing the entire length of Dunns Road. PENDING Mr Darby said Stages 2 and 3 of the road upgrade rely on elements determined by external agencies. Stage 2 of the upgrade will see Council working with Transport for NSW to construct a right-hand turning lane at the Olympic Highway and Dunns Road intersection. Stage 3 of the upgrade is construction of a roundabout at the Holbrook Road and Dunns Road intersection and is subject to receiving black spot funding. The project is funded by the Australian Government and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Active Ageing: new gym and aqua classes for over 50s The Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre is running a new series of aqua and gym-based fitness classes specifically for people over 50. The Staying Active classes are now running every Monday, with the aqua aerobics class held at 7.30am and the group fitness class at 11am. Oasis Programs Supervisor Lauren Gaynor said the classes were a terrific way for over 50s to start their fitness journey, be supported by enthusiastic staff, and make new friends. “As we age, it becomes increasingly important to keep on top of our health by staying active,” Ms Gaynor said. “Regular exercise helps you build muscle mass, helps with your strength and balance, and keeps you fit and mobile. “It doesn’t really matter what level of fitness you’re currently at or if you have pre-existing injuries; our staff will be able to adapt the workout to suit what you’re comfortable with.
“The classes are held in a big space, and the class sizes are capped, so there’s plenty of room to socially distance as well.” The Staying Active classes are also proving to be a social activity for participants. “Exercising in a group environment is a lot of fun and many of our class groups go out for coffee later,” Ms Gaynor said. “We’re actually having a two for the price of one OVER 50s CLASSES: Stay healthy and be social with new group classes for offer for our Monday 11am gym class which will run until the 27 June, so it's a perfect opportunity over 50s every Monday at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre. to bring a friend and have a giggle together as you do the workout.” Staying Active Mondays To book in for the Staying Active classes, call the Oasis team on 02 6926 9390 or email Aqua aerobic class: 7.30am. From front page The new Business Event and Conference Guide was produced as part of Council’s Tourism Partner Program and includes more than 64 venues suitable for staging small intimate events right through to large conferences, as well as over 100 local businesses and support services. Council also promotes our venues and experiences through the visitwagga.com website which includes a recently updated suite of business event videos created through support from Tourism Australia and Destination Riverina Murray. After a hiatus over the past two years, which saw many business events move online, Council’s Visitor and Events team is seeing a sharp uptake in enquiries and bookings.
“We’re receiving many enquiries, with organisers sometimes planning one or two years in advance,” Ms Parker said. “There’s also a stronger demand for interstate and regional travelling, so it’s great for the local industry to see light at the end of the tunnel. “Every event or conference we host here boosts our local economy with conference visitors to regional NSW spending an average of $704 per trip, benefitting not only the venues and accommodation providers, but our local cafés and restaurants, florists and service providers; there’s a flow-on effect.” The new Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Business Event and Conference Guide is available online at visitwagga.com/businessevents or in print form at the Visitor Information Centre, 183 Tarcutta Street, Wagga Wagga.

WHAT’S
ON WAGGA WAGGA + SURROUNDS
THIS WEEK:
NEW HOME NEEDED: Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara and the small herd of fallow deer currently living at the Wagga Zoo & Aviary. The zoo is calling for expressions of interest from people who would be able to offer the herd a secure, safe, and permanent home.
Caring home sought for deer friends Wagga Zoo & Aviary staff have begun the search for a caring new home for a small herd of their fallow deer. Council is calling for expressions of interest from people who would be interested in caring for the herd, which is made up of one stag and five doe. Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara said the ideal applicant would be a hobby farm owner. “We’re looking for someone who will take good care of them,” Ms McNamara said. “We’re not in any rush so we’re willing to hold onto them until we find the right home. It’s important for us to ensure they’re going to someone who will appreciate them and take good care of them.” The deer are being rehomed to help the zoo manage their deer population, a process that zoo staff undertake with animals in their care every year. “We’ve got five hand-raised baby deer that we’re hanging on to which we won’t be breeding any further,” Ms McNamara said. “The herd that we’re looking to rehome will most likely be pregnant by the time they’re ready to be relocated, which will be around September, so the new owners will probably get new baby deer around December 2022.” The zoo will wait until the stag has dropped his antlers before relocating the herd for safety and transport reasons. When the stag is in ‘hard antler’ they can be at their most dangerous and difficult to handle.
“Stags drop their antlers every year and look like one of the girls for a while before their antlers grow back covered in soft velvet,” Ms McNamara said. “Around February the velvet starts to fall off and the antlers become very hard and can be used as weapons – which is also when the stag is full of hormones and can get quite cranky! So, we’ll wait until that period has passed before moving them.” As part of the expression of interest process, applicants will need to provide evidence of suitable housing, land and fencing. “Deer can jump so all fences need to be at least two metres high,” Ms McNamara said. “We’ll also need a commitment that no product derived from the animals will be offered for sale, consumption or profit, and that the new owners are committed to lifetime care of the herd. “We’re happy to inspect any property within 100 kilometres of the local area to ensure applicants have the appropriate facilities.” Ms McNamara said the benefits of caring for the deer would far outweigh any adjustments needed to provide a suitable home for them. “They’re such elegant animals; being able to care for them at your own farm would be quite a rewarding experience for any family.” For more information about the herd, or to request an expressions of interest form, please contact Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara on 1300 292 442 or email zoo@wagga.nsw.gov.au
