Let's build a bright future

Wagga, are you ready? Tomorrow kicks off four weeks of community consultation to determine Wagga’s vision for the future. Wagga View – Our Future in Focus is the community’s opportunity to have a say on the

new Community Strategic Plan. This plan is not a Council document. It is an overarching guiding document created by the community, for the community. The Wagga View consultation starts tomorrow at the Wagga Beach Markets from 9am to 2pm. The first week of consultation, from Sunday 15 May to Saturday 21 May, focuses on reviewing the community vision created in

2009 and having a discussion on whether this vision should change or remain the same. Wagga’s current vision is: “We are a thriving, innovative, connected community on the Murrumbidgee. We are rich in opportunity, choice, learning and environment.” Participants can share their opinions on this vision by taking part in a short video, polls, a createa-vision activity and an interactive

ball game. You can also watch community leaders and experts share their opinions on Wagga’s current vision. Find the Wagga View crew at the following locations: Sunday 15 May: Stall at Wagga Beach Markets from 9am to 2pm

Monday 16 May – Friday 20 May: Shop front, Sturt Mall 10am to 4pm Saturday 21 May: Stall at Tarcutta Markets, Tarcutta Hall from 8.30am to 2pm. Further information and consultation opportunities are also available online.

Have your say on Council's budget and long-term plans There’s still time to share your feedback on the City of Wagga Wagga’s long term plans. Council’s total operating expenditure budget of more than $118M is on public exhibition as part of its Draft Combined Delivery Program and Operational Plan (DPOP) 2016/17 and Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP) 2016/26. Community members can view the draft plans and give their feedback on funding priorities, projects and operations online until 26 May. As well as a draft operating budget of $118M, more than $51M in new capital works and $13.6M in recurrent capital works are planned for completion in 2016/17. A proposed reduction of fees for the Activities on Footpath Policy also forms part of the draft plans. The reduction is in line with a Council resolution from the 29 February Ordinary Meeting, which includes no per chair charge, a reduction in application fees and other changes. Community members can view the draft plans and give their feedback on funding priorities, projects and operations online at wagga.nsw. gov.au/yoursay.

GUIDANCE: Launching a book to mark the history of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery guides as part of National Volunteer Week are (from left) Councillor Kevin Poynter, Manager Community Services Madeleine Scully, Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes, Curator Education and Public Programs Linda Elliott, guides Mardi Holcombe, Leanne Croker, Irene Turner, Joan Cahill and Sue Lidden, and gallery Manager Stephen Payne.

Art gallery's guiding lights recognised

Nearly 30 years of volunteer work at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery was recognised at a special afternoon tea on Tuesday as part of National Volunteers Week. Inspired by last year’s 40th anniversary of the gallery, the volunteer guides worked with Curator Education and Public Programs Linda Elliott to share their own history. A special e-book was created and launched at the afternoon tea to commemorate the hard work of the guides

over the years. “Since 1988, the guides have passed on great insight, knowledge and passion to the thousands of visitors to the gallery,” Manager Stephen Payne said. “Every group they lead receives a very individual and unique experience – it’s never just a routine and every exhibition is always brought to life with humour and a personal perspective, as well as thorough research. “The guides are truly a tremendous

asset to the gallery and the community. On behalf of the gallery and Council, I sincerely offer our deepest thanks for their dedication, passion and commitment.” There are currently five volunteer gallery guides - Leanne Croker, Mardi Holcombe, Sue Lidden, Irene Turner and Joan Cahill, who was one of the original guides in 1988. Anyone interested in becoming a guide or learning more can contact the gallery for more information on 6926 9660.

Kids get creative to celebrate National Family Day Care Week Annual grants Paint smocks were the dress of choice for Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) children last week, taking part in a special art workshop that inspired creativity and plenty of fun. To celebrate National Family Day Care Week, WWRFDC held an artist in residence program for children and educators who attended Reflective Early Learning sessions. Wagga artist Tricia Harrison mentored the children and worked collaboratively to develop a body of work, including a colourful banner and wooden sculpture, which were displayed in an art show last week.

“Our mini artists were given opportunities to explore colour and form using natural and recycled materials, which resulted in some amazing artistic pieces,” WWRFDC Manager Kym Stewart said. “Tricia inspired the children to reuse a window blind to create a masterpiece using stamping and rolling techniques. “The session was a chance to celebrate the uniqueness of every child and giving children a voice to express themselves freely, which is a foundation WWRFDC builds itself on.” The artworks will be permanently displayed PAINT TIME: Imogen Horsley, 4, of Wagga, at the Playsession Hall works on an artistic piece during the WWRFDC at the Botanic Gardens. artist in residence workshop.

applications closing soon

What are you waiting for? Local community organisations, groups and individuals have until the end of the month to apply for a share of $175,000. Applications to the Annual Grants Program 2016/17 can be made across six categories for community-focused groups and individuals in the Local Government Area. “These grants are part of Council’s commitment to developing our vibrant and diverse community,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. Application forms and grants guidelines are available online at www. wagga.nsw.gov.au/grants.

Fun for the whole family at Wagga Comedy Fest From front page “We have Matt Okine at 5pm, followed by Sammy J and Randy and then to top the night off we are seeing the Wine Bluffs,” Ms Matthews said. “The whole festival is a credit to the Civic Theatre team. “They have put together a fantastic line-up of talent and really thought about the show times and locations so people can make the most of the comedic talent that’s coming to

town.” The 2016 festival has attracted some of Australia’s best stand-up comedians, including headliner, the Crown Prince himself Joel Creasey, quick-witted story-teller Hannah Gadsby, funny man Sammy J and his purple puppet pal Randy and Wagga’s own Michelle Brasier and Dane Simpson. While side-splitting laughter is guaranteed throughout the

festival, Ms Matthews said she also enjoys comedy for its ability to start conversations. “Comedy is light-hearted entertainment that shines a light into dark places and can make it easier for people to look at hard issues, such as politics, sexuality and racism,” she said. The Wagga Comedy Fest hits the city from Wednesday 1 June to Saturday 4 June. Tickets for all acts, and comedy

workshops, are on sale now. “Commit and buy your tickets as soon as you can. It’s not every day talent of this calibre comes to Wagga,” Ms Matthews said. “Also, be open to seeing a show you haven’t heard of or seen before, you never know, you might just be surprised.” To find out more, visit civictheatre.com.au or phone 6926 9688.

External review of animal shelter under way Highly qualified veterinary specialist Jacob Michelsen is currently conducting an external review of the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter (GRAS). The external review was one of the key actions announced by General Manager Alan Eldridge in his open letter to the community

on 7 April. “Council acknowledges the concerns regarding past incidents at the shelter and this independent review will ensure animal welfare is in line with best practice going forward,” Mr Eldridge said. “Dr Michelsen is highly regarded

in his field and has spent time in Wagga as a lecturer at Charles Sturt University. “He has substantial management experience and will cast a critical eye over the performance of the animal shelter.” Canberra-based Dr Michelsen

recently visited the shelter as part of his review and is now in the process of assessing Council’s procedures and policies. “I have been to Wagga and visited the animal shelter and can say that the physical infrastructure there is excellent,” Dr Michelsen said.

“I am currently reviewing the policies and procedures of the shelter with a view to making recommendations that ensure the running of the facility matches its physical excellence.” The external review will be completed by mid-June.

Thousands say the zoo is best for holiday fun A trip to the Botanic Gardens Zoo is the best way to spend the school holidays in Wagga, according to nearly 10,000 locals and visitors. The zoo was featured on Sydney Weekender in February, with host Mike Whitney getting up close and personal with

the different animals at the free facility. “The zoo had 9870 visitors in the April school holidays and it continues to be one of our city’s most popular familyfriendly attractions,” Manager Strategic Parks Operations David Walker said.

“There have been many positive comments about the zoo over the past few months, especially about the range of animals and unique features like the free-flight aviary and wandering peacocks.” The zoo is open from 9am to 4pm daily.

NEW LOOK: Vintage copper-coloured signage for the Museum of the Riverina was installed on the exterior of the Historic Council Chambers site recently.

New sign suits museum to the letter

Even as the letters went up one by one, it was as if they had been there forever. Wagga’s Historic Council Chambers received a minor facelift recently in the form of old-style lettering denoting its present use. Since 1999 the site has hosted local and touring exhibitions as a site of the Museum of the Riverina. Now passersby can be under no doubt what goes on in one of Wagga’s prettiest buildings. Despite their vintage look, the copper-coloured letters are actually fabricated out of plastic for sturdiness and durability. “This classic signage is in fitting with the aesthetic of this important heritage building. It’s in a lovely ‘conversation’ with the iconic 2WG sign directly across the bridge,” Manger Museum of the Riverina Luke Grealy said. “Even though the Historic Council Chambers

Uranquinty Monday May 16, 3.30pm – 5pm Ladysmith Thursday May 19, 1.30pm – 2.15pm

have been a museum for 17 years, people still pop in asking to pay their rates. I’m sure this will be a helpful reminder to people that their museum is right here out the front of the Civic Centre.” The museum is undergoing a rebrand which will be unveiled in July.

Keep an eye out for stop signs, traffic changes Stop! … Collaborate and listen. There’s a new STOP sign in Thorne Street. The new sign is one of a number of sign and line changes the City of Wagga Wagga will be carrying out in the coming days. All works were recommendations approved from the Traffic Committee at the end of 2015. Where necessary, changed traffic condition signs will be put out for motorists. Keep an eye out for the following changes: Thorne Street stop line and sign (pictured) • A STOP sign has been installed for south bound traffic, replacing a give way sign, at the intersection of Thorne and Forsyth streets. A stop line will also be painted across the south bound lane. Bolton Park car park disabled parking • A disabled parking zone, with signs and decals, will be installed on the western side of an access lane, off Morgan Street, in the Bolton Park
