Register for Garage Sale Trail
CREATIVE COUPLE: Helen Pittman (left) and her husband Jeff (right) show Council Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent some of the creative works they will be putting on the table as part of the Garage Sale Trail.
There’s just one week to go before Wagga Wagga’s Garage Sale Trail kicks off, and there’s still time to register to host an event. The Garage Sale Trail is being held on Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 November, and there will be a big range of items up for grabs over the two days. Wagga Wagga City Council Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said it has been good to see such a positive response from individuals and organisations. “We have more than 20 Garage Sale hosts already registered, from individuals and families from across the city of Wagga, to a group sale at Ladysmith with five stalls in one!” Ms Kent said. “We also have several community organisations on board, including a local CWA branch, the South Wagga Anglican Church and Riding for the Disabled Association (NSW) Wagga Wagga Centre, which not surprisingly, will have lots of horse gear for sale. “It’s such a great opportunity for those hosting an event to make a little bit of money for themselves or to raise much needed funds for a not-for-profit organisation or community groups. Continued on page 2.
Active Travel Stage 2 to roll out The expansion of the city’s Active Travel shared pathway network was secured earlier this week with Wagga Wagga City Council accepting almost $3.8M in funding towards the second stage of the project.
Stage 2 of the project identifies additional routes to the city’s Central Business District and other popular destinations such as shopping centres. Additional grant funding will be
required to complete all of the cycling network identified in Stage 2 of the Active Travel Project. Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said staff have started detailed planning on the initial scope of works to be delivered under the funding. “Indicative routes for future implementation have been identified,” Mr Creighton said. “However, it is proposed the actual routes to be constructed under the allocated funding will be determined in consultation with stakeholders. “Criteria to be considered include connectivity along the route, construction costs and the buildability of each route. “We are currently still completing the first stage of Active Travel, so we have plenty to consider in planning this stage
of the project.” The total allocation of funding for the initial links of Stage 2 Active Travel is $3,927,583 with $3,797,077 to be funded from the NSW Cycling Infrastructure Fund and the remaining $130,506 to be funded from Council’s developer contributions. The funding was formally accepted at Council’s 9 November Ordinary Meeting.

REVAMP BEGINS: Playground Officer John Conlan oversees the removal of old equipment at the Henwood Park Playground.
INTO THE SWING OF BUILDING HENWOOD PARK PLAYGROUND
Works are underway on the Henwood Park Playground redevelopment in Kooringal, with the removal of old playground equipment this week. The site is being cleared and prepared for the installation of the new design, chosen by the community earlier this year. Wagga Wagga City Council Works and Playground Officer John Conlan said just a few pieces from the existing playground will remain.
“We’ll be keeping the shade sail and the pyramid climbing net, although we’ll put a new net on it,” Mr Conlan said. “The new equipment will include a triple bay swing set and a standard playground structure as well as a natural play timber climbing area.” The redevelopment is expected to be completed by early December, weather permitting.

Continued from page 1. “Registrations are still open and are free, so if you want to give a new life to some old or no-longer-needed items or make some extra money, then hop online and sign up now.” For the rest of us, it is a chance to snap up a bargain or find something special for yourself or as an early Christmas present for someone else. You can go to the website and find out what is available at each sale and then map out your trail over the weekend.
“It’s such a great event to support as it has such a broad range of benefits, not just for those selling or buying items on the day,” Ms Kent said. “It keeps this money in the community, providing an important boost to the local economy in these COVID times, and it helps reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.” To register for free as a host or to plan your own shopping map, visit garagesaletrail.com.au/ waggawagga

LOCAL VISION: Wagga Wagga City Council's community engagement sessions this week have focused on local business groups, including Committee 4 Wagga which was represented by Michael Quirk (right) and Justeen Kirk who met with Wagga Wagga Mayor Cr Greg Conkey (left) and Council Director Regional Activation Michael Keys. Wagga Wagga City Council is starting an extensive community information campaign in the Local Government Area’s villages next week and is urging people to give their feedback and ideas. The focus of the visits is to discuss the important longterm planning statement which maps out growth and development visions for Wagga Wagga and the villages over the next 20 years. A moving experience: projections of the Bidgee
A creative interpretation of the Murrumbidgee River is lighting up the city’s Wollundry Lagoon Precinct each night, with the release of the final projected artwork from Wagga Wagga City Council’s NightLights program. Exploring how water links community and land, Time Tracing is an original performance video created in Wagga Wagga, which tracks and projects the ever-changing conditions and lines of the Murrumbidgee River catchment. Projection and installation artist Kellie O’Dempsey worked with
a local videographer Damian Jenkins and performers to create the work, which incorporates dance, movement and montage to simulate the power and life of the river. The map lines of the Murrumbidgee River were recreated through the moving bodies of local performers Wes Boney, Zoë Hadler, Natasha Strimpf and Marcus Wright. “We filmed the dancers down on the beach at dusk – it looks quite mysterious,” Ms O’Dempsey said. “There’s a tracing of the river that moves across the whole image, but
it’s actually very fine. “The dancers move through the space and become these great big figures that occupy the landscape, standing with the trees along the beach with the same presence and strength. “First Nations culture is reteaching everybody that people, environment and landscape are one and the same – the river is an ancient part of life that needs to be protected.” Originally planning to project her light drawings directly onto the dancers as they moved, Ms O’Dempsey had to reimagine the
work after the COVID-19 shutdown put a halt to their planned workshop. “Together we came up with a choreography script and broke it down into three parts – the idea of drought, flood, and the river coming back to its middle ground,” Ms O’Dempsey said. “It was a cooperative production. There was a lot of improvisation and conversation, and we did it all online!” Created for the 50m x 8m facade of the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre, the projection is the largest artwork Ms O’Dempsey has ever made.
“I think it looks fantastic and with the reflection in the lagoon – it kind of blew me away,” Ms O’Dempsey said. “As a visual projection experience, it’s quite haunting. I think the river has a lot of ancient stories to tell – we’re just passers-by.” Time Tracing can be viewed from the Wollundry Lagoon Precinct nightly from 8.30pm, from 9 November – 3 December 2020. The projection is the final commission of the NightLights program, which was funded through the Council’s ‘Enliven’ Public Art Plan 2017 – 2021.
CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AT WASTE CENTRE Changed traffic conditions at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre site will take effect from this week. Construction of a new carpark and sealing of a bypass road at the centre will create some delays for motorists. Temporary traffic lights will operate on the entry road which will be reduced to one lane around the works for at least the
GENEROSITY RECOGNISED: Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM (left) joined John Mason for the plaque unveiling.
Walk of Honour inductee unveiled Resident John Mason was inducted into Wagga Wagga’s Walk of Honour at a recent ceremony on Baylis Street. The 91-year-old, who has lived his life serving the community, was recognised for his community service and dedication to helping others in need. Mr Mason was joined by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, as well as family and friends at the official plaque unveiling. Jan Mason, Mr Mason’s daughter, said her father was surprised upon learning of his nomination for the Australia Day Awards Walk of Honour and in
shock when he won. “He said ‘There are so many more people doing so many more amazing things; it shouldn’t be me. It was just something I did,’” Ms Mason said. “He was very humbled by it. We knew how hard he’d worked, never expecting any recognition. “It’s what he’s done his entire life. He’s a very generous man and we’re just all really proud of him.” Mr Mason is the 36th inductee into the Baylis Street Walk of Honour, which was instigated in 1998 to recognise substantial contributors to the community.
AUS TR ALIA DAY NOMINATIONS 2021 Nominations are now open for the 2021 Australia Day Awards across five categories: • Citizen of the Year • Young Citizen of the Year • Ted Ryder Memorial Sports Award • Walk of Honour • Environmental Citizen of the Year Award. Nominations are open until midnight, Monday 7 December 2020. For more information visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/australiaday
Wagga Wagga’s NYE plans hit by COVID Due to the COVID-19 situation and restrictions on gatherings, the Council coordinated New Year’s Eve event for this year has been cancelled. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the decision was made for reasons of public safety and compliance with current NSW public health orders. “We realise this will be disappointing for
many in the community, but we are confident everyone understands the challenging circumstance we, along with the rest of the nation, are facing,” Cr Conkey said. “While restrictions on gatherings and movements may ease following Christmas, the likelihood of this occurring is unknown at this stage. “The planning for this type of event requires a reasonable lead-in
time to organise, so the decision to cancel has been made now.” It is not the only Council-related event to be affected, with the Mayor’s Christmas party and the Wagga Wagga City Council Staff Christmas party also cancelled. Cr Conkey is encouraging residents to get out and celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve by booking in at restaurants and other hospitality venues
to support local small businesses At this point, the formal Citizen of the Year Awards ceremony on the evening of Monday 25 January 2021 will still go ahead. A decision regarding the Australia Day community event on Tuesday 26 January 2021 is expected to be made soon, pending COVID health restrictions and requirements.
next three weeks. A 20km/h speed limit will also be in place until February next year. The changed traffic conditions ensure the safety of visitors to the site and also contractors operating machinery in the area. Wagga Wagga City Council thanks the community for its patience whilst the upgrades at the Gregadoo facility are completed.
