Gregadoo Road design to start The upgrade and widening of a major thoroughfare road in Lake Albert is a step closer. A report to Wagga Wagga City Council’s Ordinary Meeting on 10 February outlined a two-stage $4.7M project for the Gregadoo Road upgrade which is scheduled to start next year. A definite start date is yet to be set while community engagement with
landholders in the area continues. Sections of land adjacent to the road are required for the widening to take place to enable a 30-metre uniform corridor for the entire length of the road from Plumpton Road to Mitchell Road. “It’s still early in the planning stage of the project but there is progress,” Council Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “We started liaising with residents late last year and have explained the project and what needs to happen for the
upgrade to proceed. Our consultations have been positive, and that process of community engagement will continue. “It’s a road rehabilitation project which has been on Council’s radar for some time and funding is now available to work towards a detailed design. “This is a project which will address a number of traffic concerns. The design will also include pedestrian accesses and pathways in the area.” The project is planned to take place over two stages.
Stage one comprises development of a roundabout at the intersection of Plumpton Road and Gregadoo Road, upgrading of the intersection of Plunkett Drive and Gregadoo Road and upgrading of the connecting roads and approaches to these intersections together with drainage upgrades and relocation of necessary services. Stage two will complete the remainder of Gregadoo Road. Council is funding the project with $3.5M and Roads to Recovery grant funding of $1.2M.

LOCAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES 'KEY PRIORIT Y'
A partnership between the City and key industry representative, the Chamber of Commerce, has been endorsed providing a vital link in promoting Wagga Wagga as a regional target for growth and new investment. Wagga Wagga City Council and the Wagga Business Chamber this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to seal a twoyear agreement, which will bring several benefits to the city’s small business community. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey
OAM, said the MOU has been developed to define the key objectives, funding administration and management of a partnership between Council and the Chamber. “This MOU will encourage and support the Chamber in key areas of business development, education, advocacy, recognition and advice for businesses, all with Council’s support,” Cr Conkey said. “Our city has a strong business community across many sectors and it’s important for the Council and the Chamber to work closely with them all to achieve greater
outcomes which benefit the city’s future as a vibrant and growing regional centre.” Chamber President Danielle Wait said one of the Chamber’s first aims under the agreement is to develop a four-year strategic plan to engage local business and identify opportunities for the city’s economic development. “We are delighted to be partnering with Wagga Wagga City Council and I expect that we will achieve many positive outcomes together during the next two years,” Ms Wait said.

Autumn exhibitions launch Wagga Wagga Art Gallery officially launches its Autumn Exhibitions Program on Saturday night, 15 February. Featuring artists from the Gallery’s Regional Exhibition Program, there is a strong local focus on the exhibition accompanied by workshops, artist talks and programs scheduled across the entire weekend. Michael Agzarian’s Global Melody Project will be opened by renowned ABC Radio and Double J host, Zan Rowe on Saturday night. The Global Melody Project is a social art initiative Michael Agzarian started in 2016. The idea was sparked when he observed a group of pedestrians, all wearing headphones, waiting for traffic lights to change. Watching them, he wondered, ‘what are they all listening to at this moment?’ South-West Sydney based artist Freya Jobbins’ powerful new exhibition RETURN must not be missed. “This new body of work explores my honest and personal response to my eldest son David going to war … waiting on his return and coping with the inevitable aftermath for both of us,” Freya said. “These works have been made over the last seven years, with influences drawn from the German Expressionists where art was shaped by war and I drew inspiration from embittered artists like Erich Heckel, Otto Dix and Kathe Kollwitz.” RETURN will be officially opened by Adam Porter of Campbelltown Arts Centre.

The mysterious ‘Wagga Bump’
Wagga Wagga City Library launched their largest book club, One Book One Wagga, on Valentine’s Day – also affectionately known as ‘Library Lovers’ Day’. Over sixty copies of this year’s selection – Charlotte Wood’s The Weekend – are now available thanks to the Friends of the Library. In addition, several Riverina Regional Library Book Clubs, including members of the 47 Wagga clubs, will be reading and discussing the book in 2020. The author will be guest speaker at the annual One Book One Wagga Gala Dinner in May during Library Week. Library Programs Officer Wendy Harper said in the years since One Book One Wagga had been running, staff had noticed a curious phenomenon they'd coined ‘The Wagga Bump.’ “The book we chose last year was Chris Hammer’s Scrublands.
We’d booked him early on; it was his first fiction novel. Then after coming to Wagga, he went on to win all these amazing awards, including one of the world’s most prestigious crime writing prizes, the New Blood
said. The Wagga Bump seems to be continuing. Since acquiring Charlotte Wood for One Book One Wagga, The Weekend was selected for the 2020 Stella Prize longlist.
...since One Book One Wagga had been running, staff had noticed a curious phenomenon they'd coined ‘The Wagga Bump.’
Dagger Award,” Ms Harper said. “We chose Michelle de Kretser’s The Life to Come, and Sofie Laguna’s The Eye of the Sheep, both of which went on to win the Miles Franklin Literary Award. And we booked Liane Moriarty just before Big Little Lies became a series (on HBO). It was an amazing opportunity for locals to be able to meet her. Between agreeing to be our author and the dinner, things went crazy for her – we got in just at the right time,” Ms Harper
With such an enviable track record in book selections, how do our librarians select which book we’ll all be reading come mid-February? Ms Harper said the team generally chose a recent release by an Australian author. “We want to support Australian writers, and it’s more realistic getting them here. We try to mix it up, with a blend of female and male authors. We haven’t done a whole lot of non-fiction – with one exception we’ve had mainly fiction,” Ms Harper said.
With no need to register for One Book One Wagga, Ms Harper said anyone with a library card could borrow The Weekend. You may even find yourself in a conversation about the book with the person next to you. “With so many locals reading the same book, we do find it sparks a lot of discussion. People come to the desk to return it and each of them will highlight different things they enjoyed about the book, or things they really didn’t like about the book! It’s a fun way we can connect with each other,” Ms Harper said. Charlotte Wood will be coming to Wagga on 29 May, with more details to come. In the meantime, drop into the Wagga Wagga City Library to borrow your copy of The Weekend. And keep your eye out for Charlotte’s name – the 2020 Stella Prize shortlist is announced Friday 6 March 2020.

THOUSANDS SET FOR TOUCH CARNIVAL Wagga Wagga is just one week away from hosting the second annual NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference. More than 10,000 players and spectators will converge on the Jubilee Park precinct from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February for the second annual carnival which attracts teams from across southern New South Wales. Wagga Wagga City Council won the hosting rights to the carnival for the three years and staged the inaugural event in 2019 which was touted a major success and significant new event for the city. The junior competition is projected to have an economic impact of $2.3M to $3M each year, with accommodation providers in Wagga Wagga and nearby towns hosting the influx of touch players and their families. The competition will see an
increase of traffic around Jubilee Park and at the major entry and exit points around the city. Traffic control and changed conditions for motorists will be in place around Jubilee Park across the three days. Red Hill Road will be closed to eastbound traffic between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, with detours via Bruce Street. Bourke Street between Bourkelands Drive and Red Hill Road roundabout will also be closed with detours via Berembee Road, Bourkelands Drive and Holbrook Road. Road closures will be in place from 6am to 7pm over the three days and detours will be signposted. Council Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said all is in place for the carnival and the steady rainfall this week has put
the finishing touches on the playing surfaces after a long and hot summer. “Council and the NSW Touch Association are committed to the enjoyment of all people attending this major junior sporting event, while minimising the impact on the general community during the event,” Mr Cook said. “Detours will be signposted and motorists are asked to take care in the area as there will be additional traffic and pedestrians around Jubilee Park. The Junior State Cup carnival kicks off a sporting bonanza for the city in the first half of this year. Council has also secured an AFLW home and away game and AFL pre-season match between GWS Giants and Richmond on 7-8 March at Robertson Oval, with Canberra Raiders and Newcastle Knights at McDonald’s Park on Saturday 18 April.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
At the most recent council meeting I supported plans for two developments in the city centre. The first was for townhouses to
be developed at the old Eric Weissel Oval site. The second was for multi-storey units in Sturt Street behind Romano’s Hotel. I have been advocating for many years about the role of infill development
EUNONY BRIDGE W O R K S U N D E R WAY The $10.6M upgrade of Wagga Wagga’s Eunony Bridge started on Friday 14 February. The bridge was closed in the early hours of Friday morning, and will remain closed for approximately 22 weeks until 1 August, weather permitting. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said while the works are underway, traffic is expected to increase through the centre of Wagga along the Sturt Highway. “We’re anticipating that most of the heavy vehicle movements will occur in the early hours and later at night, rather than during the day,” Mr Darby said. “We understand the bridge closure will affect the community in the short term, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding. “The new deck will be stronger and wider, ensuring the bridge’s future under heavier loads for many years to come.” Council has received $9.8M in Federal and State government funding towards the project. in Wagga’s future. Increasing density within the city will mean more people can access our businesses, services and events. It is also important to have a variety of housing options as not everyone wants to live

in a three bedroom house with a backyard. The two developments approved displayed this mix with one having the concept of predominantly townhouses and the other being apartments. These types of housing can
more suitably cater for people such as students, singles, those downsizing, or those new to the workforce who can’t afford to rent a house in central and many more. This doesn’t mean it’s open slather for
developers as each development is assessed on its own merits, but it does mean doing things differently to what has been done before. It does mean accepting that Wagga is changing and we can either help guide that change as a
community or we can put the handbrakes on and miss many opportunities. I know which one I will keep advocating for.
