Council drives economy upwards The economic growth of the City of Wagga Wagga is going from strength to strength and the trend is predicted to continue. Coupled with genuine confidence in significant developments, either ready to start or recently completed, Wagga Wagga is set for a positive and exciting future, General Manager of the City of Wagga Wagga Alan Eldridge said. “These developments have substantial benefits for a sustainable future for the entire Local Government Area as well

as the 185,000 people that make up the Wagga Wagga catchment area,” Mr Eldridge said. “Wagga’s Gross Regional Product (GRP) sits at $3.6B, a growth of three per cent in the last year, $230M worth of Development Applications were approved in the 2015/16 year and the city attracts more than 1.4M visitors annually. “With the growth that we are seeing, there is no doubting that Wagga Wagga is well on its way to being an important and influential regional capital of Australia.” The current and future economic environment for the City of Wagga Wagga has been captured in the latest Economic Snapshot – due for release in the coming weeks. existing ones. “Projects with significant contributions to the city’s growth include the Bomen Enabling Roads project worth $35M and the proposed multi-million dollar Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub (RiFL), upgrade improvements to the Wagga Wagga Airport and prospective JETGO Wagga Wagga to Brisbane flight route to increase visitor numbers,” he said. “The Riverside Project is transforming the banks of the Murrumbidgee River and the city’s location on the proposed Inland Rail Route, connecting Melbourne to Brisbane, will help attract even more businesses and opportunities to the region.”
Further assisting the region’s economic development has been key relationships formed by the City of Wagga Wagga at State and Federal Government levels, locally with the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber, Committee4Wagga and businesses of all sizes investing in the city. “Council continues to have strategic commercial conversations with developers and industry stakeholders who are investing in Wagga,” Mr Eldridge said. “We have the resources and knowledge base available to meet these needs. “There’s an exciting and thriving future ahead for the City of Wagga Wagga and the Riverina region.”
WAGGA’S CULT URE TAK ES CENTRE S TAGE
Music to get the body grooving, food that tantalises the tastebuds and entertainment that transports you to another land – this is one world tour ticket you don’t want to miss. Fusion16, Wagga Wagga’s multicultural street festival, is on again today at the Civic Centre precinct. Started six years ago, Fusion brings together all the best bits from the diverse mix of cultures that make up the City of Wagga Wagga. “The Wagga Wagga community is represented by people from all walks of life and Fusion celebrates each and every one of us through food, entertainment, stalls, performances and much more,” Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes said. Returning this year is the World Food
Village which will take visitors’ tastebuds on a delectable world tour, from Afghanistan to New Zealand, China to Turkey, Egypt to France, Singapore to Nepal and more. The Cultural Village will showcase the works of the Wagga Wagga Potters Club Inc, Eastern Riverina Arts and Wagga artist Jeff McCann and have hands-on creative workshops for all to get involved. Dance and music performers from around the country and local-grown talent will be front and centre on the Victory Memorial Gardens and Civic Forecourt stages. Melbourne-based dance floor obsessed Saca La Mois DJ will command the Civic Forecourt stage while festival headlines Sugar Fed Leopards, Kylie Auldist, True Vibenation and Aaradhna will light up the
gardens main stage. Roving entertainer Old Spice will be getting down as far as his hip replacement allows to all the sweet tunes ringing out from the two stages – keep an eye out for the grandpa cardigan and out-of-control walking stick. Circus performers Cirquaholics will also provide crowd entertainment, dazzling during the day and illuminating the night. “Fusion now attracts more than 10,000 people, celebrating the food, music, art and culture that makes the Wagga Wagga community unique and liveable,” Mrs
Summerhayes said. “Fusion offers something great for the whole family to enjoy and best of all entry and entertainment is completely free.” Fusion16 is on today, Saturday 15 October, from 4pm to 9.30pm in the Civic Centre Precinct. For more information about this year’s festival, visit wagga.nsw.gov/fusion. Fusion16 is proudly funded and presented by The City of Wagga Wagga and Multicultural NSW in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Riverina Community College and major sponsor The Daily Advertiser.

the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. This can only be achieved by continuing to employ sound financial management practices and to ensure that planning and infrastructure development is relevant to future growth in the city and staged appropriately. Most importantly though, engaging and working closely with the community is crucial to future growth and development. This weekend provides a
wonderful opportunity to celebrate what a diverse and vibrant community Wagga is, with the return of the fantastic Fusion festival. This event allows us to showcase the many cultures that make up the fabric of our city. It is more than just amazing food and sensational music. It is about the community coming together and acknowledging how much we value the diverse composition of our city.
I urge you to come down to the Victory Memorial Gardens today between 4pm and 9pm to experience great food, great music and wonderful company. I welcome the opportunity to chat at any time, real ‘face time’ is my preferred type of contact, but, also feel free to call or email.

CO M E O U T F O R A N I M P O R TA N T CO N V E R S AT I O N Come out and join an important conversation about matters relating to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community. The Museum of the Riverina is hosting Queer Conversations, an afternoon of film, panels and discussions around local LGBTIQ matters. The day will begin with a screening of the new Australian film Love in Full Colour, followed by a question and answer session with the film’s director Suzi Taylor. Shot over four years the film is an intimate exploration of young Australians’ experience of coming out, coming of age
and falling in love. One story shared in the movie is that of Steph, a young gay women from Albury. Steph shares her insights into missing her school debutant ball because she couldn’t bring her girlfriend. Following the film expert panels will offer their insight and advice regarding a host of issues that affect LGBTIQ people in Wagga Wagga and surrounds. Suzi Taylor will be joined by Peter Hyndal and Jenny Yates, the founders of A Gender Agenda, and Teddy Cook, regional outreach leader from the Aids Council of NSW. Joining these panellists will be a host of local activists, leaders
and allies to inspire, challenge and stimulate discussion about how local people can create a stronger, more connected, more resilient community. Queer Conversations coincides with the Museum of the Riverina’s We Are Here: Riverina LGBTIQ Stories exhibition which shares stories of the lesser known history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer residents in the Riverina. The special event takes place today, Saturday October 15, from 12pm to 4pm at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site, corner of Baylis and Morrow streets, and is free.

Growing skills at the gardens Continued from front page The Big Picture program gives students the opportunity to learn work-ready skills outside the classroom. Big Picture participant, 16-year-old Frank Cox has spent the past 12 months working one day a week at the Botanic Gardens and says he has learnt some valuable skills. “I ve been involved in a heap of different things so far, like spreading bark chip, weeding and pruning the roses. “There’s a really great bunch of guys here to work with, they are easy to get along with,
supportive and good teachers.” As part of the program Frank has also obtained a number of work certificates and the skills he has learnt has enabled him to apply for a horticulture course through TAFE. Team Leader Botanic Gardens Jonathan Nicoll said Council had been proud to partner with the program. “The Big Picture Program has been able to contribute some great life and work skills to the students and been a great help GREEN THUMBS: Council’s for us to continue maintaining parks staff with Wagga students the gardens for all residents from The Big Picture program and visitors to enjoy,” Mr Nicoll said.
