the Museum is also asking residents to share memories and local stories they have of special occasions or events and gathering shared at the gardens for future publications. If you have photographs from the early days of the gardens or special memories and stories to share, please contact Regional Museums Officer Sam Leah on 6926 9658 or email leah.sam@wagga.nsw.gov.au.

GARDEN PARTY: Botanic Gardens Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt and Friends of the Botanic Gardens president/secretary Irene Toal are ready to celebrate the gardens’ 50th anniversary in 2018. INSET: Council gardeners planted special "50" gardens to celebrate the official opening of the anniversary celebrations.

Golden year for Botanic Gardens One of the city’s iconic and much-loved landmarks will be in full bloom in 2018.

The Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens turns 50 next year and a schedule of events is being prepared to mark the milestone anniversary. Residents and visitors are invited to stop and smell the roses and join in the celebrations throughout the year. The calendar of events so far includes a family-friendly Easter celebration, elegant high tea and special garden party to honour the official opening of the Botanic Gardens on 24 August, 1968. A number of improvements will also be

carried out at the gardens throughout the year, including a $20,000 refurbishment of the Shakespearian Garden. “There would not be many locals or visitors who haven’t paid the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens a visit,” Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt said. “Many, many memories have been shared in these gardens over the decades, from family get-togethers, to outings on the model railway and zoo and aviary and Christmas carols sung at the music bowl. “This social history and how the gardens have shaped Wagga Wagga over the years is what we will be celebrating and commemorating during the 50th year since the official opening.” The many people who have worked

tirelessly behind the scenes to contribute to the gardens, both past and present workers, volunteers and community groups, will also be celebrated. “There will be nods to Tom Woods Senior and his son Tom Woods Junior, who were both influential in the creation of the gardens,” Mr Pavitt said. “We will also say thanks to many others who have contributed over the years, including Kerry Geale, Council’s former Head of Parks and Gardens in the 1980’s, and, Stephen ‘Jock’ Walden, who this year marked 30 years as a horticulturist with Council. “Both men helped establish the Botanic Gardens' Camellia Garden – which acknowledges Wagga Wagga’s sister city

relationship with Kunming in China.” President/secretary of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Irene Toal said the 50th year was a chance for the community to celebrate and maybe even consider giving back to the gardens. “We are so lucky to have such a beautiful, natural attraction right on our doorstep,” Mrs Toal said. “A lot of time and assistance is needed to maintain the upkeep of all the elements of the garden. The Friends is one group that raises funds through donations to help with this upkeep and new projects, and we are always looking out for new members.” If you would like to join the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Contact Irene Toal on 0412 992 647.

Recently Graeme has Graeme commenced made the decision to his career here in Wagga retire from Riverina Water Wagga as an accounting County Council after seven clerk in 1973. For those

younger people reading this it might be hard to fathom that at this time computers were just starting to be utilised in the workplace and stenographers, typing pools and typewriters dominated the workplace. SUMMER FUN: Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Phill Blake and Lake Albert resident Gavin Case test out some of the new amenities along the eastern foreshore at Lake Albert.

Lake Albert foreshore facelift finished in time for holidays Grab your swimmers, towel and sunscreen and beeline to Lake Albert this summer. Shoreline works along a 200-metre stretch on the eastern side (Apex Park side) of the lake are now complete. New sand-filled cushions and rocks line the foreshore providing comfortable spots to sit by the waters’ edge or easily access the water for a swim. There’s a dedicated kayak/canoe launch ramp and a raised sand pit area provides a safe area away from the water for families to enjoy. Twenty steel poles on either side of the boat ramp also provided boat tie-up points. Works have also been complete to repair and protect the shoreline from erosion. Regular Lake Albert user Gavin Case said the upgrade works would be a welcome addition to both residents and visitors. “As a Lake Albert resident and boat user, the upgraded facilities make a great spot for family fun,” he said. “Whether you’re looking at a day boating on the lake, walking the lake or taking the kids to the park, the improvements to the area have made it a top choice to head to for locals and an ideal place to visit if you are from out of town. “The new improvements are in addition to recent upgrades of the boat ramp and car park, which

provide ample spaces for boat users; as well as great barbecue facilities and playground. “We really are lucky to have such a diverse area that can cater for many different uses.” Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said as well as recreational benefits, the new works also provide a number of safety upgrades. “This project delivers a number of improvements to access and safety at the lake. These include stairs in the shoreline to easily move from the sand to the higher grassed areas, a raised sandpit area slightly away from the water for families with toddlers to safely enjoy the space and assigned boat tie up areas will help separate the vessels from people enjoying the water. “Some works have also been carried out to remediate erosion in a section of the foreshore which will help strengthen and protect the banks of the lake into the future.” All treatments along the foreshore are designed to withstand the elements and fluctuating lake water levels. The project is funded by a $500,000 grant from Roads and Maritime Services NSW Boating Now Projects and $230,000 contributed by Council. Lewis Drive, the main entrance to the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital, has this week been changed to two-way traffic flow. Previously Lewis Drive only permitted one-way traffic, with traffic exiting from Doris Roy Lane or Yabtree Street. The two-way change will allow traffic to flow more freely in the hospital carpark area. New signs have been installed to notify motorists of the changes. Left-hand turns only are permitted to traffic exiting Lewis Drive on to Edward Street. A stop sign has been installed at the intersection of Yabtree

Street and Lewis Drive for motorists entering from Yabtree Street. Unrestricted parallel parking on the southern side of Doris Roy Lane has been reinstated, along with no stopping permitted on Lewis Drive between Edward and Yabtree streets. The changed conditions are per a Traffic Committee recommendation from July 2017, which requested the works be undertaken once car park and demolition works associated with the new hospital were complete. These works were finished last week.

FROM ARABIC TO URDU: Wagga Wagga City Library Assistant Mahsa Nikzad, who is originally from Iran, and Manager Claire Campbell with the new Community Languages Collection.

New books help bridge the language gap for residents With a community made up of 107 language groups, Wagga Wagga City Library is giving our newest residents a helping hand to make sure nothing is lost in translation. On the back of its highly successful Language Café program, the library is now featuring a Community Languages Collection of more than 2600 books from the State Library of NSW. The collection features adult and children’s books in 14 different languages - Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Sinhalese, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Hindi, Tamil, Tagalog, Burmese, Urdu, Croatian, Serbian and Kurdish. Library Manager Claire Campbell said the new books combined with the Language Café are making the transition to Australian life easier for countless new residents. “The Language Café has been running since July with more than 70 participants and 20 volunteers spending a few hours per week practising English conversation,” Ms Campbell said. “We have such a diverse community and the

thousands of new resources in the Community Languages Collection will make people feel welcome in Wagga Wagga as they can still access their own literature while learning English. “We’re also expecting some Arabic DVDs to add to the existing collection of bilingual picture books for families and we have a range of resources for people learning English as a Second Language. “If residents need another language, ask our staff and we will contact the State Library of NSW to see what’s available.” The benefits of the Language Café for people new to Australia isn’t lost on Library Assistant Mahsa Nikzad, who comes from Iran and has been in the country for just over a year. Part of her role at Wagga Wagga City Library is helping coordinate the Language Café, while she is also taking advantage of the Persian books in the Community Languages Collection. “The Community Languages Collection helps to put my mind at rest as I am very busy

Many participants will be experiencing their first festive season Down Under and have also shared their own culture’s celebrations at the café. The Language Café will resume on Monday 8 January.
