Robo-mow
It might look like a giant toy, but Council’s new remote-controlled lawn mower is hailed as an innovative piece of equipment. The Spider is a recent addition to Council’s fleet of maintenance equipment used to mow roadside verges, stormwater easements and levee banks. Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton said the Spider is very useful because it safely cuts grass and vegetation in areas that are inaccessible for conventional mowers or tractors. “So far it’s been put to use on levee banks, steep areas at Bomen and along the roadside entrances to Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.” “The Spider is safe for operators because it’s driven by a remote-control unit which allows operators to stand well clear of the mower and avoid any risk of injury. “This is particularly beneficial when mowing around obstacles and sloped areas of difficult terrain – the spider can handle inclination of up to 55 degrees. “The other benefit is the Spider can tackle a variety of foliage ranging from fine grass such as kikuyu to heavy, thick brush and reduce it to a fine mulch. “Not only is more efficient, there’s no doubt the Spider has improved the safety of Council’s parks, stormwater and sewer teams,” he said. NEW TECHNOLOGY: Andrew Jones puts the new remote-controlled lawn mower through its paces at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.
Help make Wagga more inclusive The next stage of a plan to make Wagga Wagga a more inclusive city will be mapped out with community members at an engagement forum this week. Social Planning Coordinator Lisa Saffery said Wagga Wagga City Council is committed to making the community more inclusive and delivering goals identified in the Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP 2017-2021) which meet the needs and aspirations of the community. “In the first 12-months of DIAP we have successfully completed disability inclusion projects which have had a

positive impact on the liveability of the city, and importantly were identified by the community,” she said. “This forum is an important opportunity for community members to hear what’s been achieved through the DIAP in the first 12 months, give their feedback, and explore and discuss the actions planned for 2018/19. “We value the community’s input and contribution to improve equity and accessibility for all members of the community. “The establishment of the Wagga Access Reference Group, with members including the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability and Intereach, along with business sector and general community members, is a big step forward in bringing the voices of people with a broad range of disabilities to the table,” she said.

A number of projects identified in the plan have already been completed with more underway now. “Some members of the Access Reference Group and numerous agencies were integral in determining the preferred locations of the 12 additional on-street accessible car parking spaces throughout the CBD, and construction is now underway,” Ms Saffery continued. “We’re proud that work is underway on the construction of Livii’s Place – an inclusive playspace accessible for all children and their families and Marveloo – a much needed mobile adult changing facility; both located in the Bolton Park precinct. Earlier this year the Wagga Wagga Local Achievement Awards included an additional category to recognise Diversity and Inclusion and this award was received by Peggy Adamson.”

High-speed internet a possibility for Bomen
High-speed internet connections for businesses at Bomen are a step closer following Council’s endorsement to undertake design planning to build a case for the switch from fixed wireless to fibre to the premises. Tuesday night’s Council meeting also accepted $20,000 from the Department of Premier
and Cabinet to contribute towards the cost of the detailed plans. Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said the switch would provide fibre to the premises and high speed internet connections for existing and new businesses in the Bomen area. “The fixed wireless service does not have the capacity
for existing industries and is a constraint for new development, with business owners having identified the current network as a potential deterrent for growth,” he said. “It should be noted that this would be the largest area switch to high speed internet to date in Australia. “This proposal will improve
high speed internet connections and increase the attractiveness of Bomen to a larger range of businesses and move beyond the current concentration on heavy industrial. This will even open up opportunities to expand into international markets. “We’ve identified business sectors that will benefit from Bomen’s strategic
location and infrastructure. For example, data centres charged with expensive Sydney retail rents will have a viable option to relocate to an area such as Bomen because the technology infrastructure will be comparable with what is offered in Sydney. It’s one step closer to Wagga becoming a smart city,” he said.
Bomen is one of the largest industrial parks in NSW and home to leading international and national companies such as Teys Australia, Southern Oil Refinery, Riverina Oil and BioEnergy (ROBE), BOC Gas, Austrak, Renewed Metal Technologies (now Enirgi Group) and Council’s Livestock Marketing Centre.
REFUGEE STORIES CAP TURED
The Museum of the Riverina will host the photographic exhibition Stories About Hope from 20 June until 12 August to celebrate the human dignity, identity, and strength in people from refugee backgrounds. The launch coincides with World Refugee Day on 20 June and Refugee Week which runs from 17 to 23 June. “The debate on refugees so often excludes the voices of people with lived experience and hence dehumanises them,” says Museum of the Riverina Manager, Luke Grealy. “Their stories are more common than you think and the exhibition shines an important light on the
voices, perspectives and experiences erased from public conversation,” he said. Renee Dixson, the exhibition’s creator and producer says the exhibition started out as an autobiographical reflection of her journey with her partner Tina to seek safety. “For me, it was important to challenge the negative rhetoric about people from refugee backgrounds, and shift discussions towards human dignity, strength and hope and offer solutions,” she said. “It is pivotal that we do not reduce people seeking safety to a singular identity. “The experience of forced displacement should not define someone forever. We
all have some past, but it’s important not to give up, and find the strength to move forward with confidence,” she said. The free exhibition will be complemented by a comprehensive information program, including a panel discussion with Renee and Tina on opening night, and two advocacy and educational workshops. Workshop tickets are $15 each and can be booked online at www.museumriverina. com.au/exhibitions/ stories-about-hope. Stories About Hope has an affiliated book available for purchase at the exhibition. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to support refugee organisations in Australia.

DON’T DUMP IT’S DUMB
A new 12-month trial campaign designed to reduce the instances of illegal kerbside dumping on Wagga Wagga streets has kicked off. Don’t Dump its Dumb is funded by a $62,500 grant from the NSW Environmental Protection Agency as part of a state wide push to combat illegal kerbside dumping. Environmental Education Officer Samantha Parsell said dumping rubbish or unwanted goods in reserves, along roadsides or anywhere that isn’t an approved rubbish or recycling centre is a fineable offence. “It is also unsightly and costs Wagga Wagga City Council thousands of dollars every year to remove and dispose of the offending rubbish,” she said. “In the past 12 months 356 cases of illegal dumping have been reported in Wagga. Three
areas in Kooringal, Tolland, and Ashmont identified as hot spots are set to receive attention through this new campaign. These areas are well-known dumping sites for unwanted household goods including furniture, mattresses and clothes.” “The Don’t Dump It’s Dumb initiative will roll out a mix of measures aimed at combating illegal kerbside dumping. A renewed focus on timely reporting will encourage residents to report illegal dumping incidents at RID online, to increase the chances of catching offenders. “Secondly an information program run in conjunction with real estate agents will educate and encourage residents about correct disposal methods, such as using the existing weekly kerbside waste service and
• Report incidents of illegal dumping at ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au. • Phone 131 555 for situations requiring urgent attention. • More information available at wagga.nsw.gov.au/rid contacting Wagga Wagga City Council for disposal of bulky goods. “Kerbside design is also earmarked for modification with several grass nature strips to be replaced with low maintenance shrubs to discourage dumping behaviour. Finally, free ‘Trash to Treasure’ workshops planned for residents to encourage reuse, repurposing or upcycling of old household items.” GAME, SET, MATCH: It’s now even easier to have a hit of tennis following the launch of Book a Court at the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre. Book a Court allows users to book and pay online, with users then given a PIN to access the court and turn the lights on at their designated time. Joining Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM at the launch of the service was 22-time Grand Slam champion Todd Woodbridge (left), along with representatives from Wagga Wagga Tennis Association, Tennis Australia and Southern Sports Academy. Works to repair the solar lighting around the Lake Albert pathway is moving forward after some ‘bugs in the system’. An infestation of ants had found their way into 32 of the lights, eating away at silicone seals and causing moisture to get inside the units. The lights were installed in March 2017 as part of a community project delivered by Committee 4 Wagga, with assistance provided by Wagga Wagga City Council. Each of the 104 light poles were sponsored by community members, groups or organisations. A number of the lights are currently being repaired and “ant-proofed” under warranty by the supplier and will be reinstalled in the coming weeks. Council staff will also install weatherproof bait stations on each pole to try and mitigate any future issues from the ants.
