COUNCILLOR COLUMN

It is disappointing so much Council time and resources have been unnecessarily taken up in relation to the Federal Government’s plebiscite/survey on marriage. Every individual is entitled to their opinion and that

is where it starts and ends. With the individual. For members of the elected body to suggest that it is acceptable to use Council resources for one side of a debate, which has absolutely nothing to do with the charter of local government, is even more disappointing. Council as a collective should remain silent on social issues that do not represent all of the

community. Local government should stay out of this debate because if they fly the rainbow flag that is not representative of the entire community, how many constituents would be offended. This also opens a Pandora’s box on what flag can be flown and for whom. Australia has clear national flag protocols, if we stick to that I believe that is in the

councillor.funnell@wagga.nsw.gov.au

greater good. Therefore, stay out of these issues and just speak as an individual. Unfortunately, many were of the opinion we were pro-actively supporting the yes vote due to a heading by The Daily Advertiser which shows a photo of our livestock facilities above the story of marriage equality. This unfortunately misled people and misrepresented the Council. It is unfortunate

that journalism is inaccurate and often incomplete, but as many have told me, that is what they have come to expect. Perhaps it was an oversight, I guess we will never know. On a brighter note, spring is here, Wagga has many events coming up and everyone is geared up and ready to go. I urge everyone to get out and enjoy the

many upcoming spring festivities which begin this weekend with the Wagga truck show and shine, with a parade from the city to the lake. Finally, congratulations to all the participants in recent sporting finals and good luck to those yet to play.

Council wins at excellence awards A collaborative effort to better prioritise the renewal of assets, which in turn minimises risks and costs to Wagga Wagga City Council and the city, has been recognised with the Commendation Award at Statewide Mutual’s recent Risk Management Excellence Awards. The newly adopted process encourages a proactive approach to managing funding shortfalls and ensures Council is doing the most important renewals first. General Manager James Bolton congratulated the many staff from across the organisation who worked on this project.

Help choose designs for three new playgrounds New playgrounds are coming to parks on Crisp Drive (Ashmont), Horsley Street (Kooringal) and Vestey Street (Central Wagga Wagga) and residents get to pick the final design. Three options are on offer for each location, with a variety of fun play equipment to choose from.

Ashmont residents can look forward to challenging climbing webs, fun swings, a spring rider and single or double slides at the new Crisp Drive playground. The shortlisted options for Horsley Street in Kooringal include spiralling tunnel slides, a flying fox, bridges and colourful merry-gorounds.

Vestey Street playground could be updated with a combination of monkey bars, cool climbing walls, as well as single and multi-person swings. The new playgrounds will replace ageing equipment at all three parks. All playground designs encourage play

between younger and older children and incorporate exciting features that will add extra appeal to the neighbourhood where they’ll be constructed. For images of the final designs and to cast a vote, visitwagga.nsw.gov.au/playgrounds. Voting closes Friday 6 October 2017.

Bright sparks might have noticed something a little different along the Olympic Highway at Wagga Wagga. Last week two new flag lights were installed at the intersection of the highway with Red Hill Road.

The lights make the intersection safer by providing a visual prompt for motorists travelling along the highway at night. The lights were installed following customer requests received by Council to upgrade the intersection.

New pedestrian measures are being installed in Kooringal to make it safer to cross the road. Two refuge islands are being installed at the intersection of Fay and Ziegler avenues near Kooringal High School. Works started on Wednesday and will extend into next week. Road closures and detours will be in place for motorists today (Saturday 23 September) and Monday 25 September from 7am to 5pm for some of the works to be completed. Motorists travelling on Fay

Avenue will be detoured around the site, via Ziegler Avenue and Edney and Coolibah streets. The works include installing centre-of-road islands in Fay and Ziegler avenues and concreting a new footpath in Fay Avenue to access the new refuge island. Associated kerb ramps, linemarking and installation of signs will also be carried out. The works have been scheduled around school holidays to minimise disruptions. The works are being delivered through the Roads and Maritime

Service’s Pedestrian Infrastructure Safety Around School’s Program. A similar project funded through the program was delivered in Plunkett Drive near Mater Dei Catholic College in April this year. The program will also deliver new safety measures near Wagga Wagga High School, with these works to be completed later this year. Keep updated on all road closures or changed traffic conditions in the Local Government area at wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads.

After receiving a whopping 152 name suggestions, the Botanic Gardens zoo’s very popular little lambs have names. Wagga Wagga, meet Tilly and Billy. Or, more formally, Matilda and Billy. Wagga Wagga resident Michelle Kearns supplied the winning name combination, which has a very Australian theme. Matilda is short for the popular Australian bush ballad, Waltzing Matilda, while Billy is a nod to the Aussie camping essential, the billycan. “We were amazed by the response to the naming competition for our two new additions to the zoo,” Zoo Curator Kira McBeath said. “It was a tough choice to pick just one set of names from all the great suggestions that were submitted by the

The sheep are used in the area as ‘nature’s lawn mowers’ and add to the unique, natural experience of Explorer Park. The sheep will be moved into the area whenever the grass gets too long. Signs will be in place on the entry fences to the park, notifying park users that the sheep grazing is in place and that dogs are not permitted during these times.

Celebrate Biodiversity Month and the school holidays by visiting the Marrambidya Wetland. This new nature reserve is nestled alongside the Murrumbidgee River just moments from the Wagga Wagga CBD and is home to an ever-growing population of birds, mammals, fish, water bugs and reptiles.
