HAPPY LAPPERS: Members of the Lunchtime Lappers (from left) Adrian Inglis, Greg Tarbit, Jamie Shepley, Rohan Sutherland and Harry Unthank are regular users of the Oasis and have given the new tiles and changerooms upgrade the “thumbs up”. INSET: The highest grade of slip resistant tiles have been laid across the Oasis facility in a major upgrade which has finished six weeks ahead of schedule.
Oasis facelift gets tick of approval Grippy new floor tiles and a major facelift of changeroom facilities at Wagga Wagga’s Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre has the complex looking refreshed and ready for the new summer swimming season. The $800,000 major re-tiling project at the Oasis was completed last week on budget and six weeks ahead of
schedule – a significant achievement for such a large project, according to Oasis Manager Maurice Eames. “It’s a solid investment in the facility which brings many benefits for regular pool user groups and the general community,” Mr Eames aid. “We want to thank the community once again for their patience and understanding as we progressed through the various stages of this project. “It was logistically a challenge for staff and contractors at various times but the understanding of the community has assisted us in getting the project finished ahead of schedule. It’s a fantastic result.” The upgrade project includes retiling the entire 1700 sqm indoor pool

deck area, toilets and change rooms, which includes two family change rooms and the accessible toilet. “We repaired minor drainage issues and replaced the flooring with the highest grade slip resistant tiles, which comply with Australian standards,” Mr Eames said. “Additional drainage grates have been installed throughout the poolside area and change rooms to improve drainage and prevent localised water pooling.” Works started on 22 April this year and had a five-month timeframe to be finished in mid-September. Wagga Wagga City Council funded the $800,000 project with the assistance of a $200,000 grant from the NSW Government.

Council will provide $43,425 (excluding GST) to the Wagga Wagga Polocrosse Club to establish a ground bore and irrigation system at the Euberta recreation ground. The club sees about 30 local members playing the combination of polo and lacrosse during the sport’s peak season in winter. The ground has four polocrosse fields, horse areas and yards. “The club takes great pride in the polocrosse grounds and it’s fantastic to be able to help
them grow their sport in Wagga Wagga,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. The club also hosts external events such as the National Working Dog Trials and auction, Trojan Horse events, Team Yarders NSW events and Australian Barrel Horse Association events. The funding for the bore and irrigation system follows on from Council providing the club with ride-on lawn mower last year worth about $7000.

JOIN THE DISCUSSION TO HELP SHAPE LIBRARY SERVICES INTO THE FUTURE
Here’s a fast fact to help us celebrate Science Week: Orange-haired felines are special. Only about 20 per cent of ginger cats are female, because of the science of genetics and the X chromosome. Jackie is our very special pet of the week. She is a ginger and white domestic short hair cat who can be adopted for $245.50. This includes microchipping, desexing, life time registration, vaccination, worming and ID tag. Get along to Glenfield Road Animal Shelter to meet Jackie and her furry friends. The shelter is open Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4.15pm. R251000208
MORE THAN BOOKS: Wagga Wagga City Library is this week home to the Riverina Science Festival, which culminates with a huge family fun day called Future World today, Saturday 17 August. As libraries evolve over the years, we’re asking you what our library services need to look like in the next 20 years.

The Wagga Wagga City Library building is 20 years old and a review is underway of library services and programs in preparation for the city’s expected population increase to 100,000 people in 2040. Opportunities to make the library bigger and better, and more accessible, will be on the agenda at community drop-in sessions to capture
residents’ feedback. The first community consultation will be held on Tuesday 20 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm at the library, located in the Civic Centre. Funded by the library’s annual Local Priority Grant awarded by the State Government, the review is being undertaken from now until March 2020 with an external consultant being engaged to carry
out the data collection, analysis and report in conjunction with council and library staff. The NSW State Library is assisting with the review by providing comparative data to aid in the benchmarking of the Wagga Wagga City Library against other comparable library services. “We want to hear from our whole community across our suburbs
and villages about how we can make library programs and service more relevant and accessible as the city expands,” Library Manager, Claire Campbell said. “You can attend a community session or submit your feedback at waggaview.com. au/library before Wednesday 9 October 2019.”
CELEBRATE NEW YEAR'S EVE WITH FIREWORKS IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
Wagga Wagga will enjoy a New Year’s Eve fireworks display again this year after the event was given the go-ahead by the city’s councillors at the 12 August Ordinary Meeting. The family-friendly event will return to the central business district at the Victory Memorial Gardens with one fireworks display at 9.30pm which will be the highlight of the evening. Council will this year deliver the NYE celebration for the first time. This follows expressions of interest being sought twice from local businesses and organisations, however there was no further commitment to take on the 2019 event. Council Director Community Janice Summerhayes said Council will now commit to delivering a NYE event within its $50,000 sponsorship, which Council had made available for any business or group willing to host an event. Ms Summerhayes said Council has continually supported a
NYE event in Wagga for the past six years since 2013 to the total value of $275,000. “The two organisations which have delivered the event in the past six years have found the event too onerous, costly and demanding and therefore are unable to continue doing it,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Council advertised for expressions of interest twice, and there was no interest from businesses or organisations to commit to this year’s event. “Given that outcome, Council will use its $50,000 budget to deliver a scaled down event this year to meet community expectations for a fireworks display to celebrate New Year’s Eve. This will take place at 9.30pm.” Ms Summerhayes said one of the biggest challenges to holding an event on NYE was securing available staff to work on one of the biggest social nights of the year.
“We understand people want to take leave and spend that time with family and friends,” Ms Summerhayes said. Ms Summerhayes said to find that balance, the NYE event will be open to mobile food vans working in the gardens precinct and entertainment options will be discussed within the event budget. “We’re encouraging people to come to the Victory Memorial Gardens with a picnic tea and spend time with their family and friends, or take advantage of the food vans operating there,” Ms Summerhayes said. “After the fireworks there is the opportunity for revellers to remain in the CBD or visit other locations and venues to continue the celebration at local hotels, clubs and hospitality businesses, and young families will have the option to leave the area at a reasonable time as the fireworks will take place at 9.30pm.”

DRAFT POLICY ON EXHIBITION FOR MOBILE FOOD VENDORS IN WAGGA WAGGA
Mobile food vendors are a step closer to becoming a permanent part of Wagga Wagga with a new policy placed on public exhibition. The community can comment on the Mobile Food Vendor – Trading in Public Places Policy until 9 September. Fees and charges relating to mobile food vendors are also on public exhibition. “Nine vendors took part in a trial this year, with conditions in place to mitigate any impact on bricksand-mortar businesses,” Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said. “A survey after the initial trial period showed strong community support for food trucks, coffee vans
Bridge history preserved at new community space The Hampden Bridge may no longer span the Murrumbidgee River but its place in the city’s history will long be remembered as part of a new Wagga Wagga City Council project. Work on Council’s Hampden Bridge Legacy Project went into full swing this week when a crane towered the city skyline to lift a number of large lengths of timber into place at the bridge site. This was the first stage to restoring Abutment A and transforming it into a viewing platform with new seating, handrails, lighting, a replica gas lantern and interpretive signage telling the story of the bridge. The project will also include landscaping from the carpark area to the Wiradjuri Bridge creating a special riverside space for the community to use and enjoy.

vision for Wagga Wagga’s Health and Knowledge Precinct continues to provide valuable feedback towards the development of a final master plan. The draft master plan for the precinct is currently on public exhibition with community drop-in sessions also running to give people every opportunity to give their views on the proposed plan and its various options. The next drop-in session will be held at The Marketplace in Wagga today, Saturday 17 August, between 9am and 5pm. “This is another opportunity for the community to speak with Council’s strategic planners about this 30year vision for the health precinct in Wagga,” Council’s Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said. “We’ve been given some excellent feedback at our drop-in sessions so far and addressed various concerns that property owners, residents and business owners have brought to us about the draft master plan. “We want to stress this is a master plan, it’s a long-term vision to develop a structured plan for
the area as opposed to ad-hoc development, there will be no acquisition of properties and there is certainly no cause for angst among the community.” The Health and Knowledge Precinct Master Plan is being developed around the two major hospitals in Wagga and in consultation with medical specialists, many who have practices in the area. “We’re talking to all stakeholders

A second 2km section of works - along Red Hill Road between Glenfield Road and Yentoo Drive - starts in late August. The works include tree pruning, drainage works, upgrading the existing cycleway to asphalt concrete and roundabout upgrades. The NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council are funding the construction of the safe, accessible and direct 51km commuter cycling network to encourage the community to get active and commute to school, shops, work, sport and recreation. Funding was awarded on the condition that it is used specifically for this cycling project.

Do you currently cycle to work, or would you like to? Council has received funding as part of the $12.8M Commuter Cycling Network to build two, end-of-trip, secure bike storage facilities. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said one of the facilities will be located at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre in Morgan Street. “It will include CCTV, security lighting, wall-mounted bike racks, steel bike lockers and an electronic access system,” he said. “After parking at the facility users can nominate to use the change rooms at the Oasis to freshen up ahead of a day’s work. “We’d like the community’s input on where a second CBD facility should be located and what facilities commuter cyclists think should be included,” he said.
