CITY OF WAGGA WAGGA
FIRST PRINTED SATURDAY 17 DECEMBER 2016
Weekly information from us to you PL E N T Y O F PI N E CO N E S Hundreds of giant pine cones from the bunya trees in Collins Park were removed this week. The bunya pine cones can be a safety risk if left to mature as they can fall from heights of 20 metres or more and weight about 5kg. A crane was used for the important tree maintenance (inset), which had to be extended for a second day due to the volume of bunya nuts that had grown on the trees. Further works to remove the footballsized pine cones will take place early next week on The Esplanade and one tree in Collins Park. Both sites will be under traffic control with partial road closures. The removal of the large pine cones forms part of Council’s regular park maintenance program. TREE TOPS: Council’s Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton with some of the bunya pine cones taken down this week in Collins Park.
Experienced team leads Council City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge believes the organisation’s new executive team has the experience and ability to help build one of the best regional cities in Australia. With a combination of local knowledge and new ideas, the four Sector Managers and the General Manager will be working to deliver services for more than
63,000 residents across a Local Government Area of 4825sqm. The new structure was adopted by Council in July and took effect in October when the five Directorates and General Manager’s section were overhauled and replaced with four new Sectors – Governance, Community, Financial and Commercial. Following an extensive recruitment process for new and vacant positions, the Sector Managers have now joined the organisation along with a number of other key management positions. Leading the Sectors are newly appointed Chief Financial Officer Natalie Te Pohe and Commercial Development Sector Manager Paul Somerville, and existing
staff Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes (formerly Director Environment and Community Services) and Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline Angel (formerly Manager – Project Management Office). “To build the best regional city, you need the best people and I am confident the team we have assembled will lead Wagga into future,” Mr Eldridge said. “Janice Summerhayes has decades of invaluable experience working for and with the local community and Caroline Angel has extensive experience at various levels of government and has implemented a number of significant changes including the establishment of Council’s new Project Management Office.
“Natalie Te Pohe has worked in Western Australian Councils, the Queensland Mining Industry and the South Australian Government, while Paul Somerville holds both a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Melbourne University and an MBA from Monash University and has worked for large companies such as BHP Steel. “The new structure takes a more collaborative approach to our operations than the previous Directorate model. It’s also less bureaucratic and makes accountability and planning a priority across Council.” Mr Eldridge said there have been a number of challenges for Council over the past year and his focus has been on Story continued inside

TURN YOUR LIBR ARY FINES INTO FOOD
Give the gift of Wagga this festive season
Donations are overflowing underneath the Christmas tree at Wagga Wagga City Library as the annual Food For Fines program enters its last week. Food for Fines is the library and the City of Wagga Wagga’s way of giving back to the community, with members erasing their overdue fines in exchange for donated non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army. The campaign, now in its 17th year, will help restock the Salvation Army’s pantry after the busy holiday season. Since 2004, every branch of Riverina Regional Library have also been involved, meaning residents across the region can also donate to this worthwhile cause. Around the region other various local charities will be the recipients, as nominated by their branch libraries. The community can make donations to the Food For Fines campaign until close of business on Christmas Eve.

The City of Wagga Wagga has Christmas wrapped up this year, with a range of uniquely local products and one-of-a-kind gift ideas now available. Pop a taste of the Riverina region under the tree with special Christmas hampers featuring a range of local produce now available at The Wagga Shop. Hampers come in different sizes and prices and feature everything from hot sauce, honey, olives, chocolate, licorice and more. Customised hampers with a ‘pick-and-mix’ selection of goodies from the shop can also be created. For the over 18s a great range of local wines and beers are also
available. A range of other great Wagga, Riverina or Australian themed gift ideas, from hats to cheeseboards and stubby holders, are also available at the shop, located inside the Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street. If you can’t make it into the shop, you can also now browse the selection through the new online store at www. thewaggashop.com. The Gallery Shop, inside the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in the Civic Centre, is also a treasure trove of great Christmas gift ideas – from designer pieces, stylish home wares, beautiful glass pieces and children’s books and toys.
“There is something for everyone this festive season at the Gallery Shop,” Art Gallery Manager Stephen Payne said. “We have Christmas decorations available, as well as a range of stocking fillers starting from under $10, or splash out on a beautiful vase or platter at $200.” If you are still stuck for a gift idea, there are a great range of Wagga-themed items, such as books and tea towels available at the Museum of the Riverina, or, for the theatre buffs, consider a gift voucher from the Civic Theatre. To find out more about these great gift ideas visit wagga.nsw.gov.au or phone 1300 292 442.
CHRISTMAS CHEER IN THE CBD Santa’s elves were busy on Baylis Street earlier this month, with more than a kilometre of extra Christmas cheer installed in the CBD. Festive bunting is flying high down the street, while 72 coloured tiles are scattered along the footpaths (pictured right). The new additions join the traditional lights and tree at the Civic Centre and the banners down Fitzmaurice Street. The vibrant Wagga Christmas colours reflect that the down under festive spirit is about sunshine, not snow. The Civic Centre is also being lit up each night with the annual Christmas projection. This year, community members were able to take part by getting a photo in front of a green screen at Wagga Wagga City library. The images have now been animated by Andrew Hagan and are visible from the Wollundry Lagoon side of the Civic Precinct each night from dusk until the end of the Christmas-New Year period.
COUNCILLOR COLUMN
councillor.tout@wagga.nsw.gov.au
I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past year in the life of our vibrant city. Some of the highlights include the community coming together to acknowledge Australia Day at the beautiful Wagga Beach precinct, the Twilight by the Lagoon series, Wagga Food and Wine Festival, the growing community presence at our Dawn Services to commemorate Anzac Day, the exciting
and diverse Fusion Multicultural Street Festival, Gears and Beers, and the many craft and fresh food markets held almost every weekend. The list is long and diverse and reflects all that is good about living in a city that meets the varied needs of its residents. The lifestyle choices Wagga Wagga offers can only be possible through the community and Council working together. It is the responsibility of elected Councillors to engage and listen to the community and
use these experiences to inform policy and their decision making processes. How each Councillor engages with the community they serve should be as individual as they are. Transparency and accountability is not achieved by responding to media reports or social media posts alone. It involves being visible in the community, really connecting and talking to people about their thoughts and concerns. A community that is agile and open will strive to not just

survive, but to thrive. I value the many opportunities I have had over this year to learn even more about our city and its needs. With this in mind I urge you to directly approach Councillors to discuss issues important to you. You will then have the opportunity to help the city to thrive. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas with your loved ones and look forward to an exciting and positive 2017.

Say hi to Hero!
He might not have a cape, but Hero (imp 736) is ready to fly into his new home. Hero loves life and his proud and stoic demeanour gives him a sense of importance and responsibility. He gets on well with other dogs and could possibly be a great mentor for younger dogs. Hero is settled around strangers, children and unfamiliar situations. He’s an easy dog for someone with not much free time on their hands and can be adopted from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter for $273.90. The rehoming fee includes desexing, vaccination, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration. If you want to meet Hero or any of his buddies, visit the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4.15pm. L IBR ARY’S DOUBL E DEL IGH T FOR S CIENCE PROGR AMS
NEW DIRECTION: The City of Wagga Wagga’s executive team of (from left) Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline Angel, Chief Financial Officer Natalie Te Pohe, General Manager Alan Eldridge, Commercial Development Sector Manager Paul Somerville and Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes.
Positive change under way: General Manager
From front page rectifying historic issues and creating a path for the future direction of the organisation. “Change is necessary to ensure we serve our community in the best possible way,” Mr Eldridge said. “That change is now well under way, not only with our organisational structure, but with other futurebuilding initiatives such as the planning taskforce, Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy, the Community Strategic Plan ‘Wagga View’ and major projects like the Bomen Enabling Roads.” Along with the Sector Managers, other senior staff who have recently joined Council as part of the new structure are Manager Audit, Risk &
Governance Ingrid Hensley, Manager Project Operations Shannon Postma and Airport Facility Manager Leon Burger. Tristan Kell will take up the role of Manager City Strategy early in the new year along with Manager People and Culture Nicole Lofts. Former Acting Director Commercial and Economic Development James Bolton and Director Corporate Service Craig Richardson will stay with Council in the short term to work on special projects such as the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub (RiFL) and elements of the planning taskforce. Council has recently engaged a recruitment specialist for the vacant Manager Operations and Manager City Development positions.
There’s been a chain reaction of good news for Wagga Wagga City Library, with the Riverina Science Hub gaining $7000 from Inspiring Australia and its National Science Week event winning a state award. The library staff were recognised for the hard work they put in to making science week a success, taking home a NSW Public Library Network Marketing Award for its Spotlight on Science event. The award was presented at the SWITCH NSW Public Libraries Conference last month, with Wagga praised for the quality of community science-based activities and because of its promotion and reach across the region and NSW. “Science has something to offer people of all ages so it’s no surprise that the activities we run during Science Week are always very popular,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Our staff co-ordinate the Riverina Science Hub and always put in a lot of hard work to organise it, but it can be a lot of fun as well.” Now in its fourth year the Riverina Science Hub is already planning the 2017 Riverina Science Festival in partnership with CSU, local schools,
Temora Aviation Museum and Wagga Observatory. The hub has been given another boost, with $7000 in Inspiring Australia NSW funding announced last week. The funding will be used to purchase laptops for Code Club sessions at the library, support the Nerd Nites Wagga events coordinated by CSU PhD Wade Kelly throughout 2017, and for the Grong Grong Sky Picnic event in April. The library also received $1000 for its marketing award win, which is the down payment for a portable planetarium for the 2017 Riverina Science Festival in National Science Week. NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, Professor Mary O’Kane, has paid tribute to the people behind the Hubs. “This has been a great grassroots campaign to raise awareness – particularly among our young people, who are the workforce of the future – about science, technology, engineering and maths, and their importance to our everyday lives,” Professor O’Kane said. Inspiring Australia NSW is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth and NSW Governments.
