Mayor Conkey was presented with a certificate and the Peace Run torch before the runners sang him the Peace Run song. Strategy for future growth There's still time for the community to have a say on WWITS 2040 Nestled at the intersection of two major highways, freight is a key component of Wagga Wagga’s economy and position as a regional centre.

Implementation Plan 2040 (WWITS 2040), which is on public exhibition until the end of June. Council’s Manager City Strategy, Tristan Kell says the Bomen Enabling Roads project currently underway is just the first step in unlocking the future potential of the Bomen industrial area, proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub and Inland Rail Network. “In addition to building this This opportunity is acknowledged new road network there are a in the draft Wagga Wagga number of other things all levels of Integrated Transport Strategy and

government can work towards to ensure that Wagga Wagga reaps the benefits of any new major freight investment in Australia, whilst still ensuring the character and vibrancy of the city remains,” he said. “As a result of extensive community engagement one of the strategies identified in WWITS 2040 is to preserve an area for a heavy vehicle bypass corridor south of the Sturt Highway and to investigate options for such a route.

“No route has been determined yet and Council would work closely with the Federal and State Governments before they embark on such a project to ensure the community is properly consulted.”

In 2015 Committee 4 Wagga commissioned a report on bypass options to alleviate the traffic and truck congestion on Edward Street. This report is considered as a part of WWITS 2040.

A joint initiative of Wagga Wagga City Council and the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber, the program offers business owners, or people thinking about establishing a new retail business, grants of

up to $3000 to help transform the look and feel of retail areas in Wagga. There is $6500 left in the funding pool – but be quick, applications close on 30 June. “The Economic Development Grants are designed to encourage reinvestment in the city’s

shopfronts and streetscapes through increased pedestrian activity and by enhancing the vibrancy of our retail precincts,” Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said. “The types of projects businesses could apply for funding for include alfresco dining, busker or street performer spaces and lighting and

Councillor Yvonne Braid was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) as part of the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Cr Braid was recognised for “service to local government,

DINOSAUR TREE FINDS NEW HOME Wagga Wagga City Council is doing its part to help preserve an ancient and very special national treasure. Thanks to a generous donation from a Wagga Wagga couple, an infant Wollemi Pine has been planted in the Botanic Gardens. The Wollemi Pine is often referred to as the ‘dinosaur tree’ as it is recorded to have existed in the Jurassic period, some 200 million years ago. It was believed the pine was extinct, until plants were discovered in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, in 1994. Since this discovery, conservation and cultivation programs have worked to sprout new Wollemi Pines, helping to keep it in existence. The donated pine

is the second in the Botanic Gardens. “We thank the residents for their donation of the special pine to the city,” Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton said. “The Wollemi will no doubt have a long and happy life in the gardens. Growing to heights of up to 40 metres and with a lifespan of hundreds, sometimes thousands of years, this pine will bring joy to many, many more generations who come to enjoy the gardens.” Wagga Wagga City Council often receives requests of plant donations from residents. If the city’s horticultural team deem the plant to be fit and healthy, the plant will be given a SPROUTING NEW LIFE: Wagga Wagga City Council new lease of life in gardener Brian Coffey and work experience student one of the city’s parks. A submission by Wagga Wagga City Council to host the headquarters for Destination Riverina Murray Network has been successful. “Wagga Wagga City Council recognises it can play a role in making a positive difference to the Destination Network’s capacity by hosting the new headquarters,” Janice Summerhayes, Wagga Wagga City Council Director Community said. “The network is about increasing visitation and promoting what our Riverina Murray

region has to offer. It is also a collaborative approach to promote and support all tourism operators from across the Riverina Murray area, from Snowy Valley Shire in the east to Wentworth Shire in the west and down to the Victoria border. “On a local Wagga Wagga level, Council’s Visitor Economy and Events team looks forward to supporting and hosting the new Destination Riverina Murray Network by bringing a collaborative networking environment through the provision of

serviced office facilities located in the centre of the city’s vibrant cultural and art precinct. “Council supports the new Destination Riverina Murray Network’s objectives to improve industry engagement and the offering of authentic visitor experiences and product, all while supporting the growth of the region’s visitor economy.” Australian tourists are currently spending more money in rural and regional NSW than ever before. In 2016, NSW welcomed 29.3M domestic overnight

visitors, of which more than 70 per cent visited regional NSW. Three newly formed Destination Riverina Murray positions will be based at the Tarcutta Street Visitor Information Centre, including a General Manager, Business Development Manager and Administration Assistant. Wagga Wagga City Council’s successful bid for the headquarters was announced publically on Thursday by Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall.

Volunteer Elizabeth Westcombe has dedicated the last decade to documenting aging graves at the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery, but there is one monument in particular that has her baffled. Believed to have been erected in the late 1870s, the sandstone monument stands tall in the middle of the cemetery surrounded by a white panel fence, but all the markings have worn away. “You just can’t read a name on it whatsoever and being a big one like this, there has got to be somebody related to

them,” Mrs Wescombe said. “I reckon it’s a prominent person because they would’ve had to have money to put something up like that.” There is one small clue with six panels along the fence, suggesting there could possible be family interned inside. “Usually each panel is a person, so I’d say there are six people in there and each section going around would have been a person on that headstone,” Mrs Wescombe added. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director

Commercial Operations Caroline Angel is urging anyone with information to come forward. “The work that volunteers like Liz do is invaluable to the community, without her so much of our history could be lost,” she said. While the monument is a particular source of fascination at this point in time, Ms Westcombe and her sister Dianne Gamble have already documented about half of the Monumental Cemetery and are always seeking information that might help them. “We’re trying to

document the whole cemetery, take photos, write it down on paper then go and find the obituaries and make books up so that things are recorded now before they disappear altogether,” she said. If anyone has information about the monument or any of the other graves in the Monumental Cemetery they are urged to call Council on 1300 292 442. Members of the public can access the information about graves that have been documented by contacting the Wagga Wagga City Library.

Wagga Wagga City Council's Asset Management Plan for Recreational Assets has been cited as an example of best practice by a national institute. The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) has developed Practice Notes for “Parks Management: Levels of Service” for its members, who come from all tiers of local government, broader public works and the private sector. The examples of best practise are around using a well thought out process (or a science) to determine when recreation assets need

to be refurbished or replaced. In regards to playgrounds this means their replacement is not based just on age, but also on amount of use and current condition. General Manager Robert Knight said Council has also been recognised by IPWEA for being part of the review team and providing input into the Practice Notes. “This is a great example of how collaboration across the organisation has achieved outstanding recognition given these Practice Notes are utilised by local government and utility companies throughout Australia, New Zealand

and internationally,” he said. “These examples are cited alongside those from the City of Melbourne, which demonstrates that our plans and practices are at a similar high standard as those in Australia’s largest cities.” IPWEA CEO Robert Fuller commended Wagga Wagga for their involvement in the Practice Note, which will provide valuable advice for many other parks teams. The examples used by IPWEA are contained within the Asset Management Plan for Recreational Assets that recently went on public exhibition.
