New waste service almost here Almost 75,000 bins have been delivered across the Wagga Wagga region as the transition to the new kerbside waste service ramps up. Over the next two weeks, residents will start to use their new bins once their old bins have been emptied for the final time, depending on their current collection cycle. Bin delivery continues over the next week for Gobbagombalin, Estella, Kapooka amd Boorooma. “If you haven’t received your bins by 26 March, please contact us on 1300 292 442,” Waste Education & Communications Officer Alice Kent said.
AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE
“With 75,000 bins to be delivered, it is quite a long process and we thank everyone for their patience while we transition to new kerbside waste service starting 2 April. “Please read through the information pack inside your kitchen caddy to see when to start using your new bins and the process to remove the old bins. “As there are about 75,000 old bins to be collected, the removal process will take until 20 April. You can also drop your old bins off at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre during opening hours if you don’t want to wait for them to be removed.” As part of the new kerbside waste service starting 2 April, households will use three new bins that align with the Australian standard of bin lid colours: • Green-lid for FOGO (food organics and
garden organics) waste to be collected weekly. Council is currently looking for a contractor to process this material into a useable product. • Yellow-lid for recyclables, such as plastics and paper, which will be collected every two weeks. This material will be taken to Kurrajong Recycling, who will continue to process recyclable material. • Red-lid for general waste that can’t be recycled or composted, which will be collected every two weeks and taken for disposal as landfill. Households will also receive a kitchen caddy and 150 compostable liners to separate their food waste before placing it in the green-lid FOGO bin. All bins will be emptied from 2 April by JJ Richards & Sons, who were announced as

First-ever Fitz Live strikes a chord From Front Page “The first Fitz Live event was a huge success and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the community and businesses involved,” Wagga Wagga City Council Cultural Officer Tracie Miller said. “We are now looking forward to delivering an even bigger and better second Fitz Live in May.” All business venues involved in Fitz Live are members of the Wagga Tourism Partner
Program, an initiative coordinated by Wagga Wagga City Council’s Visitor Economy and Events team to build tourism and boost visitation to our city. “Fitz Live provides a fantastic opportunity for our tourism partners to work with local musicians and explore options to include live music in their business models to attract locals and visitors to the precinct,” Ms Miller said. “More than three dozen local musicians benefitted from being able to play their
original music at last Saturday’s event. “Kooringal High School’s year 11 VET Entertainment students also gained valuable experience at Fitz Live, helping to run the sound production at a number of the gigs with professional guidance.” Fitz Live will return on Saturday 5 May, providing the opportunity for residents and visitors to take advantage of the city’s beautiful autumn weather along with the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival weekend.
“Given the funding for Fitz Live came from the state Live Music Office, who specified a central business district location for this pilot microfestival, we will take into consideration all the feedback we receive for future opportunities and as important feedback to the state regarding live music in regional cities,” Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. Further details of the second Fitz Live event will be made available at visitwagga.com.au/ fitzlive in April.

Wagga Wagga City Council will invest up to $186,000 in local community projects as part of its Annual Grants Program 2018-19. Applications open on Monday 19 March, with community organisations, groups and individuals able to apply for a share of the funding. The Annual Grants Program funding categories include Community Health & Wellbeing; Connected Rural & Urban Communities; Arts and Culture; Local Heritage; Events; and Natural Environment. A new category, Youth Led Initiatives, will also be available subject to Council endorsement in the 2018/19 budget. “Council’s Annual Grants Program is a great opportunity
for everyone in our community, whether they live in the city, in a village or rural area,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “Through our grants program, we can support a wide range of services and activities that build community capacity, foster social networks and information exchange, facilitate cooperation and build on existing community strengths. “It’s part of Council’s ongoing commitment to developing a vibrant and diverse community in line with the goals of the Wagga View, Community Strategic Plan 2040, which marked its first anniversary recently.” Applications for the Annual
Grants Program open on 19 March and close on 14 May, with a grants consultation session to be held on 12 April where a staff member for each category will be able to help applicants with the process. Sixty-four community projects were made possible through last year’s grants program, including funding for a women’s self-defence workshop, the 2017 NSW Penny Farthing Championships, outdoor movie nights, the Wagga Wagga Women’s Shed and more. Cr Conkey said the Annual Grants Program has grown in popularity each year and looked forward to seeing the range of projects awarded funding for 2018/19 and the positive impact they will have on the community.
“The response to the grants program has been growing every year,” he said. “I encourage anyone interested to attend the information session to learn more about the process and discuss their application with the relevant grants officer for their category.” The Annual Grants Program has been developed to align with the Wagga View, Community Strategic Plan 2040 and applications must identify the key guiding principle the proposed project or service relates to. Application forms and grant guidelines are available at the upcoming workshop, at the Civic Centre and online at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/grants.

FERNLEIGH ROAD CLOSED 18 MARCH The first stage of safety improvements works on a busy section Fernleigh Road have been completed. This week, night works to undertake asphalt heavy patching took place between the Glenfield Road and Pinaroo Drive intersections ahead of resealing works to take place on Sunday 18 March. The section of Fernleigh Road will be closed on Sunday for the resealing works from 7am to 5pm. The works will be conducted in two sections
to minimise the impact on motorists and businesses. The first section will see Fernleigh Road closed at the Glenfield Road intersection until halfway down the block. Once it is complete, work will begin on the second section, which will see Fernleigh Road closed from Pinaroo Drive until halfway down the block. The site will be under traffic control and detours will be signposted. The final stage of the Fernleigh Road project will see
concrete medians, signage and a pedestrian refuge constructed. The final result will be a more stable and freshly sealed road, with improved safety for both motorists and pedestrians leading into the Glenfield Road intersection. The concrete works will be undertaken in the coming weeks, while this week’s asphalt heavy patching helped stabilise the road surface so potholes and other issues will be less frequent. wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads

Stalagmite saved from tip
REHOMED: Yarrangobilly Caves Supervisor George Bradford and Gregadoo Waste Management Facility Manager Geoff Pym with the stalagmite.
A surprising find at the tip is now safe and sound with the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). A local resident noticed a large stalagmite in the brick and concrete pile of Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) and alerted staff to the discovery. A loader was about to tidy up the pile and fortunately the operator was radioed to stop in the nick of time. GWMC Facility Manager Geoff Pym safely removed the stalagmite and after speaking with OEH staff the stalagmite was transported to the Yarrangobilly caves last month. The stalagmite will be put on display in the Yarrangobilly Caves Visitor Centre.
The upgrade of the Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) has reached a new milestone. A new six-way pneumatic cattle draft and extra 180 stack pens are now fully operational at the LMC. “This is one of the most necessary stages of the Cattle Yard Capability Upgrade Project and it’s a real game changer for the yards,” LMC Manager Paul Martin said. “We tested the cattle draft and extra stack pens over the past few weeks with the assistance of Delta Agriculture Wagga Wagga Livestock’s Manager Aaron Mackey, and found the trials to be a resounding success.” The LMC has been undergoing major upgrades since early last year, as part of the LMC’s Strategic Master Plan. The Master Plan was adopted by Council in 2016, to help in increase livestock capacity numbers, improve safety and future-proof the facility.
