Help us create the Gobbagombalin Parklands We need your help to transform 4.7 hectares of parklands into a fun space to explore, play and enjoy. The Gobbagombalin Parklands, which runs along Ross Parkway, are set to be developed across the next two years. Council is calling on the community to contribute their ideas to help improve the useability of the park. Some of the recreation infrastructure and amenities that could be included are: • Construction of shelters with a table setting • Bench seats located along the pathway • Toilet near the playground • 10m x15m basketball court with irrigated turf around it • Combination goal posts • Double cable-way (flying fox) • Fitness stations located along the pathway

• Water bubbler installed near the barbecue shelter • Parkour equipment • New sections of path where required to complete a circuit around and through the parklands • Plant clumps of native trees similar to what is currently in the park • Plant advanced deciduous trees along the street, in corridors along the internal paths and in clumps to provide shade for the fitness stations and furniture Your ideas will help Council plan for the development of the parklands and determine what funding is required. To share your ideas or to for further information, contact Project Officer John Conlan on 1300 292 442, email playgrounds@wagga.nsw.gov. au or visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ playgrounds.

The Eternal Flame is burning bright again following maintenance works. Council staff recently cleaned the pond and sculpture before assessing what further works needed to take place. Over the past week, some of the internal components have been renewed and the flame is now operating as normal. During the maintenance works, staff discovered a number of items that had been thrown into the pond and flame that were causing issues, including coins, food, rubbish, toys and debris. Council reminds people to be respectful and to not throw items into the Eternal Flame.

SCIENCE FES TIVAL FUN ACROSS WAGGA WAGGA

The Tolland Community Hub was buzzing with excitement this week as 120 year 3 and 4 students from Mt Austin, Red Hill and Kooringal primary schools got hands-on with science at the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP) held as part of the annual Riverina Science Festival. Wagga Wagga City Library Programs Team Leader Chrissie Bolton said the students were enthusiastic and vocal in their enjoyment and no doubt had plenty to tell their parents that evening. “For most students it was their first experience with dry ice, microscopes and indigenous bush crafts and astronomy,” she said. “Students from Mt Austin and Kooringal high schools trained as NISEP leaders and coordinated a session of chemistry-themed activities under the experienced supervision of Chemistry lecturers from Charles Sturt University, who are partners in the program.” The second session, led by Indigenous Elders, shared the science of the First Australians and included bush crafts, stone tools and rope making, weaving and Wiradjuri Sky Stories. Also attending was NISEP CoDirector Joanne Jamie from Macquarie University who founded the program in 2005 with a group of passionate chemistry teachers. “NISEP aims to foster and develop the confidence and leadership potential of Indigenous youth, using science as an engagement tool,” she said. Preschoolers also got stuck into science on Wednesday and Friday this week when the storytime books were put aside and year 10 students from The Riverina Anglican College presented science experiments. They were fascinated to see bicarb fizzing, balloons electrified, powerful magnets and a pedalpowered blender bike (on loan from Sustainable Wagga Wagga) making icy lime slushies. The Riverina Science Festival continues with RoboDay on Saturday, 18 August at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre from 10am to 4pm. Nightly projections on the Civic Centre’s walls of the digital projection animation by local artist Alice Peacock are showing until 5 September.
