Get on board WGA to BNE The sun and sand of Queensland is now less than two hours away for Wagga Wagga residents.

Wagga Wagga Airport welcomed its newest airline JETGO on 13 February, with passengers on the maiden flight from Brisbane greeted by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and General Manager Alan Eldridge.

“The City of Wagga Wagga is proud to welcome JETGO to our community,” Cr Conkey said.

“Wagga Wagga is a regional capital and to attract an airline such as JETGO increases

the liveability of our city and creates opportunity for local industry.

“It’s fantastic to hear so many people have taken advantage of this new service and I encourage everyone to continue to support it.”

JETGO will initially offer three services a week from Wagga Wagga Airport to Brisbane Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

It’s hoped these services will be increased to seven days a week as demand builds.

The RAAF treated the 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140LR Regional Jet aircraft to a traditional “water salute”.

“JETGO is thrilled to be able to offer direct jet services between Queensland and one of Australia’s most important inland cities,” he said.

“This service will offer greater connectivity for families, businesses and other services.

“Since opening up other regional NSW routes between Brisbane and Albury, Dubbo and Tamworth over the last 18 months we have seen a significant increase in visits between families and friends, as well as a significant growth in medical visits where access to medical professionals in Brisbane offered in many cases far more convenient alternatives for people in regional NSW”.

With three carriers now at the airport, City

of Wagga Wagga General Manager Mr Eldridge said the facility’s future was bright.

“JETGO’s maiden flight marks the next chapter for the airport’s development,” he said.

“The City of Wagga Wagga has incentives in place to attract and help establish new routes and JETGO has been able to take advantage of those.

“It’s encouraging to see the growth at the airport and we are working to ensure it can handle the increased traffic.

“Coupled with planned upgrades to the airport terminal, the facility is set to be a major economic driver for Wagga’s future.”

STAFF ASSIST WITH EMERGENCY RESPONSE Staff from Council’s Commercial Operations Sector lent a helping hand to the Rural Fire Service during a bushfire at Pulletop on Monday.

Staff assisted with the construction of a fire break and containment line and asset protection. Council plant including two graders, two water carts, the float and a four wheel drive were conveyed to the fire ground to assist with these tasks.

This assistance continues this week with a grader crew working on additional fire breaks and containment lines around the fire ground.

Commercial Operations staff worked until 2am on Sunday morning cleaning up rural roads and urban streets and a number of requests were lodged by residents in the city and surrounding rural area.

During the City of Wagga Wagga’s seasonal mowing program, all parks, reserves and open space areas receive one grass cut every six weeks.

These timeframes may be extended.

Mowing teams will be operating in the following areas: • North: CBD • East: Forest Hill followed by Lake Albert • West: Glenfield followed by Lloyd • Roadside: Northern region

A LL GOO D TO G LOW: WO R K TO S TA R T O N LI G H T S FO R L A K E PROJ EC T Strolling around Lake Albert at dusk or early morning will soon be safer and easier.

Work on Wagga Wagga’s Lights for Lake project will start on Monday 27 February and is expected to be complete by the end of March.

A total of 104 poles, fitted with solar lights, will be installed around Lake Albert’s popular 5.5km walking track. Each pole has been sponsored by community members or groups – which has helped fund the project.

Lights for Lake is being delivered by Committee 4 Wagga, with assistance provided by the City of Wagga Wagga.

Committee 4 Wagga Chair Judy Galloway said it was great to see the project progressing.

“We’re excited about the reality

of the project, the impending installation and the benefits the lights will bring to our community through lifestyle and health opportunities,” she said.

The works will be completed in stages, with some track closures and detours required.

“If you are venturing out to walk the lake during the construction period, please be mindful that you may be required to detour off the track on to grass, some sections may even be closed entirely,” City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge said.

“These closures or detours are important for the safety of recreational users of the lake and for the workers carrying out the project.

“There will be plenty of signage and temporary fencing around

the lake during construction and temporary blackboards in key, visible areas will be set up to display daily messages on what sections of the track are impacted.”

The new lights will light up the lake at dusk and early morning and are fitted with motion sensors.

No trees will be removed for the project, however, some pruning will be undertaken during the cooler months.

Lights for Lake has been funded through community donations totalling $230,000, Committee 4 Wagga in-kind donations of $100,000, City of Wagga Wagga contributions totalling $75,000 and $25,000 in in-kind project support and NSW Government funding of $40,000.

The Australia Day Committee is focused on planning and delivering the city’s Australia Day celebrations, including the awards ceremony.

This year’s Australia Day event at Wagga Beach attracted thousands of people, with markets, free activities and entertainment proving popular.

The Floodplain Risk Management Committee

provides advice on the development, implementation and delivery of actions of the Floodplain Risk Management Plan across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area.

Applications for both committees close 5pm, Friday 24 February.

Premier confident in Bomen Enabling Roads investment Sustainable jobs growth has the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian excited about what the Bomen Enabling Roads project is going to achieve for Wagga Wagga and surrounding areas.

On a tour of the site last weekend the Premier saw first hand the project’s progress with bulk earthworks and road base stabilisation for the new road network underway.

After receiving a briefing from project managers the Premier

confirmed her confidence in the state’s $13M investment towards the $40M project.

“Wagga is a city that is growing, and what will make it even greater and more sustainable in the future is having jobs here that are permanent,” she said.

“What this construction means is the infrastructure is being built to attract businesses to really make this area a key driving force for jobs and growth.”

Meanwhile, the City of Wagga Wagga and Genesee & Wyoming Australia (GWA) are both actively pursuing the Riverina Intermodal Freight & Logistics (RIFL) Hub at Bomen Business Park.

“GWA continues to invest in developing the business case for the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub,” GWA Managing Director David Brown said.

“To date we have developed concept designs, detailed costings

and are currently focusing on putting in place the appropriate commercial and legal structures to facilitate the development.”

City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge said staff and GWA met in Sydney earlier this month.

“Representatives from GWA and the City of Wagga Wagga spent the day negotiating key terms,” Mr Eldridge said.

“GWA and the City of Wagga

continue to work closely together on developing agreements and commercial structures for the proposed freight terminal in Wagga Wagga.

“Both parties are satisfied with the progress including the work completed on design and the commercial/legal structures for the intermodal terminal.

“We look forward to making further announcements in the coming weeks.”

AP OL OGY DAY DEL IVERS ME S S AGE OF HOPE AND HE AL ING School students and community members came together on Monday to mark the 9th anniversary of the national Apology to the Stolen Generations.

Aunty Faye Moseley shared with those gathered at the Marrambidya Wetland Healing Place her account of when she, and her siblings, were removed from their family.

She also spoke of the importance of healing and hope for future generations.

“We need to pull together and work as one community to help right the wrongs … we need to support each other and guide our youth and teach them to follow proudly in our footsteps,” she said.

The community ceremony was also a chance to showcase the latest cultural additions to the Healing Place – Gunyahs (Ganyas) which are traditional Wiradjuri huts, and a new scar tree created by the removal of a Coolamon (Gulaman) by local Wiradjuri man Peter Ingram.

Special guests at the ceremony included Aunty Faye, Aunty Cheryl Penrith, Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge.

The Federal Government Apology was delivered by the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and also represented the completion of one of the five key measures of reparation recommended in the 1997 Bringing Them Home Report, with 2017 being the 20th anniversary of the report.

KO KO M O V I A WAG G A A heatwave and a freak storm couldn’t stop The Beach Boys for performing for their Wagga fans at McDonald’s Park.

While the iconic Californian band weren’t able to take to the stage on Saturday 11 February after wild weather lashed the stage and equipment, they returned on the Monday night to play for thousands of people from across the Riverina.

Speaking ahead of the second show, lead singer Mike Love thanked the audience for their understanding.

“It’s Wagga Wagga so we want to visit twice! I was so happy and pleased to see families and kids at Saturday night’s concert and we just couldn’t disappoint them so we have to come back,” he said.

The Surf & Soul concert, which also featured The Temptations of My Girl fame, was proudly presented by the City of Wagga Wagga, which provided $20,000 and use of McDonald’s Park to bring the event to town.

R E S E A L P R E PA R AT I O N W O R K S TO C O N T I N U E A number of high-traffic roads in Wagga Wagga will have changed traffic conditions applied from next week as part of the city’s annual reseal program.

At the end of 2016 and early in 2017 Council crews and contractors completed reseals on nine roads in Wagga, including popular roads such as Lake Albert and Fernleigh roads.

Preparation works for the second stage of the reseal program are now in full swing.

Popular roads undergoing preparation works include Best and Tarcutta streets, as well as O’Reilly, Tompson, Kincaid and Docker streets.

Manager Operations Stephen Jewell said these works were necessary to ensure the best road surface was in place for the reseal.

failures to kerb and gutter repairs,” he said.

“These defects must be fixed first to ensure the new asphalt is laid on the best possible surface.”

“Some delays and detours, in place for up to five days, will be required during the works.

“Motorists might have already experienced or noticed some detours and closures as a result of the reseal program,” Mr Jewell said.

“When possible, work is scheduled to ensure minimal disruptions, such as outside of peak traffic periods.

“However, sometimes this is not possible, or jobs require longer to complete.

“We thank motorists for their patience as we deliver the reseal program.”

Change in speed limit for Dunns Road A temporary speed limit of 40km/h has been applied to Dunns Road.

The City of Wagga Wagga has implemented the reduced speed limit due to the deteriorated state of the road.

A grader crew will be on site next week, starting Monday 20 February, for seven to eight days, to level and improve the road surface.

The road will be closed during the day, from 6.30am to 4pm, while the works are carried out.

The road will reopen outside of these hours, with the temporary reduced speed limit in place.

options for Dunns Road were being investigated.

“It is likely the 40km/h speed limit will stand after the works are completed next week and until a further solution for the road is determined,” Mr Eldridge said.
