Eunony Bridge upgrade set for start Work on the $10.6M strengthening and widening of Wagga’s Eunony Bridge will start in mid February resulting in the full closure of the bridge for six months. Wagga City Council Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said the bridge closure will mean changed traffic conditions and alternate routes for residents and business operators accessing and leaving the North Wagga and Bomen areas. “We are urging people to plan extra time
for their journey to and from these areas,” Ms Angel said. “Eunony Bridge is a well utilised access point to the northern residential and industrial areas, particularly when accessing them from the Sturt Highway. “The bridge closure is going to affect that access and will require alternative arrangements. It means there will be increased traffic coming along the Sturt Highway and through the CBD to gain access via the Gobbagombalin Bridge. “Council recognises the inconvenience the bridge closure will cause and we appreciate your understanding whilst this important project is completed. “The upgraded bridge is a key piece of infrastructure for the Wagga Wagga High
Productivity Freight Route, which will provide better access from the Sturt Highway to the Bomen Industrial Park and connections to the Olympic Highway.” Eunony Bridge will close on 14 February, 2020. The work to the strengthen and widen the structure is expected to take six months, weather permitting, with a scheduled reopening date of 1 August, 2020. Late last year engineers carried out strength testing and collected soil samples to assist with the final design of the upgraded bridge deck. Council has received $9.8M in Federal BRIDGE WORKS: Drilling works and soil and State government funding towards the testing was carried out on Eunony Bridge project. last year in preparation for the full closure of the bridge on 14 February.

LOC AL HEROES RECOGNISED WITH A U S T R A L I A D AY A W A R D N O M I N A T I O N S Some of the community’s most generous and selfless residents have been recognised with nominations for the 2020 Wagga Wagga Australia Day Awards. The awards ceremony will be held at the Civic Theatre on Friday 24 January from 7pm. There are six nominees for Citizen of the Year, one nominee for Young Citizen of the Year, three for the prestigious Walk of Honour, two for the Ted Ryder Memorial Award and one nominee for the new category, Environmental Citizen of the Year. “It’s great to see so many outstanding citizens recognised through the awards nomination process,” Wagga Wagga City Council Director Community Janice
Summerhayes said. “The Australia Day Awards recognise and honour the dedication of people who work tirelessly to make the city a better place to live. “This year a new award will recognise our Environmental Citizen of the Year. I would like to congratulate all award nominees on behalf of our city.” All community members are invited to attend the awards, which will feature a presentation by Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador and Aussie beach expert Brad Farmer AM. There will be events across three days of Australia Day celebrations, kicking off with free entry at the Oasis Aquatic Centre on Thursday 23 January between 6pm and
7.30pm. Families and friends are encouraged to bring a picnic and join in the community festivities. On Australia Day (Sunday 26 January), there will be a free community breakfast from 7am at the Wagga Beach along with fun activities and entertainment. There will also be a special citizenship ceremony at the beach at 9am. Mr Farmer put Wagga Wagga on the world stage in December last year when he named the city’s beach at Number 9 on his top 20 list of Australian beaches for 2020. “I’m counting the days until I can take another dip in the Murrumbidgee and feel the sand in my toes along this now nationally famous beach,” he said.
“Wagga Wagga is all things Australian – a vibrant regional city with down to earth Aussie values whilst celebrating diversity and inclusion. “It’s a marvellously generous city and we’ve seen that once again in the bushfire crisis which has affected so many communities. "The people of Wagga and surrounds stood up to help their fellow Australians in need – this is a fantastic city which has a true community spirit. “I’m absolutely stoked to be part of Wagga’s Australia Day events this year.” For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/australiaday or to find out what other events are in on Wagga over the Australia Day long weekend go to visitwagga.com

A FINE COLLECTION: Wagga City Library’s Team Leader Programs, Promotions and Partnerships, Christine Bolton, with the collection of food donated during the 2019 Food for Fines promotion.
AUSTRALIA DAY 2020
‘Food for Fines’ donations highlight city’s generosity Time and time again the generosity of the Wagga Wagga community shines through, restoring faith in humanity. Even before the region’s catastrophic bushfire brought out the best in compassionate residents, community members were digging deep in support of the Salvation Army and families doing it tough in 2020. Hundreds of donations, filling numerous boxes, were collected through the month of December as part of the Wagga Wagga City Library’s Food for Fines appeal. The time-honoured appeal has been running for more than two decades and invites community members to donate
non-perishable goods to pay off any outstanding library fines or as a gesture of goodwill. “Once again, the appeal has been extremely successful,” Team Leader Programs, Promotions and Partnerships Christine Bolton said. “People have been extremely generous. “Many visitors arrived carrying bags full of goodies for the appeal.” Thanks to the overwhelming generosity shown by library members, Wagga Wagga City Library was able to waive just under $7500 worth of library fines. “Of course, not everyone
who donated something to the appeal was paying off a fine,” Ms Bolton said. “Many community members just wanted to show their support and solidarity for people who may find the Christmas – New Year period a stressful and difficult time.” The appeal is designed to enable the Salvation Army to distribute much-needed items in the months after Christmas, when families are, perhaps, feeling the pinch and purse strings are being tightened. Wagga Wagga City Library is one of 19 branches of the Riverina Regional Library Service which participated in the Food for Fines initiative.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN It has been an horrendous start to the new year. The bush fires to the east of Wagga Wagga have already caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage, and the crisis is far from over.
Whilst the City of Wagga Wagga has only been marginally affected compared to other areas, we have played a significant role in assisting the many hundreds of people who have been impacted by the fires and who have sought refuge in this city. Many of those people have lost
everything … their homes, their livestock, their vineyards, their grazing country, their livelihoods. It will take them (and the affected areas) many years to recover from this national catastrophe. As this crisis was unfolding, Wagga Wagga people banded together to help.
0417 467 760 | councillor.conkey@wagga.nsw.gov.au
Our volunteer firefighters rushed up to the high country to fight the fires, people offered accommodation, many donated food and other necessary items, others contributed money and many volunteered their time to assist. Wagga Wagga City Council also made a
significant contribution on behalf of its residents. We quickly provided graders, water tankers and fuel carts. When requested, our response has been immediately “yes”, and then we have worked out how we could handle the request. Our commitment is ongoing, and we are
already thinking of the long term future and how we as a city can assist in the economic recovery of this region. Apart from the local offers of assistance, I have also received phone calls from mayors from as far away as Rockhampton who want to assist in the rebuilding effort. I have been
overwhelmed and humbled by the support Wagga Wagga people have given and are giving. It’s in these times of adversity that the true spirit of our caring and compassionate city comes to the fore.
Councillor Greg Conkey
KNITTIN’ GROUP STITCHIN' TOGETHER FOR GOOD C AUSE
In the wake of the catastrophic bushfires gripping the region, big-hearted community members have found countless ways to support those impacted by the devastating crisis. From financial donations to dropping off goods, making blood donations and even offering evacuees a place to stay, the best of humanity has been on show. On Thursday a large group of community members took an opportunity to rally behind another worthwhile cause by taking part in a special knitting session inside the Wagga Wagga City Library. Regular knitters, sometimes knitters and even first-timers put their needles and yarn to
good use, creating snug and secure pouches for injured, abandoned and orphaned wildlife. “When young animals, including wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, gliders and possums, come into care they need to be kept warm and in a quiet space,” WIRES volunteer Glenda Pym said. To achieve this sort of safe and calm environment, WIRES volunteers use these specially made pouches. “We are always in need of suitable pouches.” Due to the fact the pouches are used for a diverse selection of animals, WIRES required a broad range of different sized pouches. “There are so many kind and compassionate people who want to help our wildlife but are

unable to commit to animal rescue or care,” Mrs Pym said. “By getting involved in making pouches or pouch linings, people can play a really important role in looking after our gorgeous, native wildlife.” Team Leader Programs, Promotions and Partnerships Christine Bolton was thrilled with the response to the knitting day. “It was truly inspiring to see how many people stopped by to lend a hand,” Ms Bolton said. “There was a real sense of camaraderie between all the knitters. It was beautiful to see.” The core of the group who participated in the event on Thursday, meet bimonthly inside at the library as part of The Knittin’ Group.
