AY 16 AUGUST 2014

Hard work by the matchmakers at the Botanic Gardens zoo has paid off for Jenny the miniature donkey, with a new colt moving in just in time for the July school holidays.

The couple has been getting on well, but there’s just one problem – Jenny’s new hubby doesn’t have a name. “Council staff have been searching for a male donkey since August last year and the only thing missing now is a name for the zoo’s latest addition,” Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. “We’re giving the community the chance to name Jenny’s new beau, so if you’ve got a great idea then please let us know.

“There are plenty of options – perhaps something to do with Wagga, or maybe in honour of a famous donkey.” Jenny became Wagga’s most eligible bachelorette last August when Wagga Wagga City Council began her search for Mr Right. The pretty black and white girl was born in 2011 and is the second last foal of the long-standing pair of donkeys who were the zoo’s previous inhabitants. The yet-to-be-named colt hails from near Tamworth and is grey

to you Jenny’s quest for M r Right

The keepers at the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens zoo are calling on the community to help play match maker and find a mate for their lonely miss donkey. Jenny, Council’s resident miniature donkey, is looking to be matched with her Mr Right and live happily ever after. She was born in 2011 and is the second last foal of the long standing pair of donkeys, who were the zoo’s previous inhabitants . This pretty black and white girl enjoys dining on fine grass, long walks in the sun and playing with her human friends at the zoo. Jenny is looking for the perfect companion who shares her interests and wants to start a family. “Council is looking for anyone in the community who might have a young male miniature donkey that we could pair up with our Jenny,” Director Environmental and Community Services, Ms Janice Summerhayes said. “We are keen to hear from anybody who is willing to sell Council their male donkey so we make the Botanic Gardens zoo his new home. Our wonderfully loving and caring staff will ensure he receives the best of care and he will always have plenty of visitors.” If you can assist young Jenny in her quest for love, contact Wagga Wagga City Council on 1300 292 442 or via email council@ wagga.nsw.gov.au

Tonnes of hazardous waste cleaned out

More than 10 tonnes of hazardous household waste has been safely disposed of thanks to this year’s Household Chemical CleanOut. Held every two years at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, the cleanout is a partnership between REROC Waste Forum and Wagga Wagga City Council. Council’s Waste Management Officer Kylie Crouch said this year’s event on 20 June saw nearly double the amount of residents take part in comparison to previous years. “In 2013, 210 householders disposed of about 3.7 tonnes of hazardous household waste. At this year’s event, we had 418 householders dispose of

approximately 10.7 tonnes of hazardous household waste, including 5771kg of paint and varnishes, 1321kg of gas cylinders, 1004kg of oil and 596kg of pesticides.” “The response from the community this year has been outstanding and it’s great to see the community choosing to dispose of their hazardous waste in a safe, environmentally responsible manner.” The cleanout is a free service for the disposal of a range of common household chemicals, such as paints, pesticides, motor oils and pool chemicals and other items such as batteries and fluorescent tubes, some of which can be recycled or reused. The next cleanout is scheduled for 2017.

Curran’s stroke of genius

PICTURE THIS: Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy with his portrait by Archibald finalist Tony Curran.

NAT IONAL TREE DAY

From the walls of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery to the Art Gallery of NSW, local artist Tony Curran has spent the last week celebrating his place on the Archibald Prize shortlist. Mr Curran’s work Luke was selected as a finalist in the 2015 prize and featured in his recent exhibition in Wagga, Stay. Keeping with the local theme, the portrait is of Museum of the Riverina Manager and friend Luke Grealy. “Luke has been amazing to my wife and I since we moved to Wagga, from inviting us around to dinner and even sourcing an amazingly hospitable refuge for us when the city was evacuated during the 2012 flood,” Mr Curran said. “This painting is the most ambitious painting I’ve completed

to date, in terms of both scale and technique. “It was the culminating work of my PhD research into contemporary portraiture and was the apex of my recent exhibition Stay.” Along with showcasing some of Mr Curran’s other works, the exhibition gave the community the rare chance to sit for the artist, who created an on-the-spot portrait on his iPad. “It’s fantastic to see a local artist get this sort of national recognition,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said. “Like many members of the community I sat for a portrait during Stay, so now we all proudly lay claim to a personalised portrait by an Archibald Prize finalist.”

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

Household asbestos scheme extended until end of 2015

Wagga Wagga City Council is pleased to announce that the Household Asbestos Disposal Scheme has been extended for another six months. This means residents have until the end of December 2015 to be able to register to be part of the scheme, which will allow them to dispose of asbestos from their property for free, provided certain conditions are met. Council was successful in securing grant funding through the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to participate in the scheme, which is part of the NSW Government’s $465 million dollar Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. “The scheme aims to make the disposal of small amounts of asbestos from home demolition or renovation jobs easier and cheaper for householders,” Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said. “It applies to bonded asbestos only, not friable materials, such as asbestos contaminated soils and insulation.” Once a property is registered, the scheme allows two options for the removal of asbestos. “Householders can engage a licensed Workcover contractor to remove a maximum of five tonnes of asbestos, once only, from their property,” Mr Kausche explained. “The licensed contractor will then be required to

dispose of the asbestos at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre which is the only waste facility in the LGA licensed to accepted asbestos waste. “The second option is that householders, in accordance with Workcover Guidelines, can remove up to 10sqm of bonded asbestos themselves, ensuring Work, Health & Safety guidelines are followed. Householders will be required to prepurchase an asbestos removal kit from Council which contains all the necessary personal protective equipment & bags to ensure the removal work can be completed safely. “The bonded asbestos must be disposed of, along with the kit, at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, ensuring that all conditions have been met to guarantee free disposal.” The Householders Asbestos Disposal Trial Scheme provides a significant opportunity for householders to cost effectively and safely remove asbestos from their homes. It is anticipated the scheme will help reduce exposure to asbestos fibres and combat illegal dumping of asbestos materials within our local government area. For further information contact Wagga Wagga City Council on 1300 292 442 or visit our website www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/asbestos. THIS WEEK:

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL GROWING TALL: Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent has a smile on her face after checking on one the trees planted during her first National Tree Day in 2008.

National Tree Day to put a smile on your dial Money doesn’t grow on trees, but happiness does. This year’s National Tree Day is on 26 July and the latest research shows those who take part are 15 per cent happier than the average Australian. If you want to put a smile on your dial, grab your gloves and head to 36 Clifton Street, Hilltop for this year’s community planting day from 10am to noon. The community event is being hosted by Wagga Wagga City Council and Wagga Wagga Urban Landcare and if you still aren’t smiling by lunchtime, then there’s a free barbecue for all volunteers. “This year’s National Tree Day will see 1400 seedlings planted, which will provide habitat and food sources for local fauna including squirrel gliders, honeyeaters and lizards,” Council’s Environmental Education

Officer Alice Kent said. “Volunteers will be able to see the difference they have made to our city as they watch the seedlings grow bigger and bigger over the years to come. “You’ll be helping the environment while beautifying our city – two very good reasons to put a smile on your face.” This year marks the 20th National Tree Day, with 21 million trees, shrubs and grasses being planted over the past two decades. The location for this year’s Wagga event will also create a green corridor to link existing areas of natural vegetation. Volunteers should wear sturdy and enclosed footwear and if possible, bring along a pair of gardening gloves. For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/environment.

Planet Ark “Needing Trees: The Nature of Happiness” report: • Despite Australia being typically associated with outdoor living, we spend around 90% of our time indoors. • People who participate in National Tree Day are 15% more happy than the general Australian population. • Results show the amount of time children spend outside will influence how happy they will be as adults. • The report can be found at: http://treeday.planetark.org/research/
