Bob's service to Wagga celebrated
Wagga Wagga’s Cecil “Bob” Scott had plenty to celebrate this week. Along with marking his 80th birthday on 14 May, his contribution to the community was recognised with the unveiling of a Walk of Honour plaque on Baylis Street. Bob was joined by family and friends at the plaque unveiling, with the crowd joining in to sing him happy birthday. For the past 60 years, Bob has been the heart and soul of the Wagga Wagga & District Highland Pipe Band. He has been involved in many activities throughout Wagga Wagga and surrounds including 60 years leading the Anzac band, playing at the Dawn Service in Wagga Wagga and Uranquinty, performing at the Tarcutta Driver Memorial Service, and has over 20 years’ experience playing at the Eisteddfod and National Dancing in Wagga Wagga and surrounds. Bob was announced as the 35th Walk of Honour recipient at this year’s Australia Day Awards. You can see his plaque near 66 Baylis Street.
HONOURED: Cecil "Bob" Scott was recognised for his contribution to the community with a plaque unveiled on Baylis Street this week, which was also Bob's 80th birthday.
Working together to promote our region A Wagga Wagga City Council initiative is harnessing the combined potential of 140 businesses and organisations to capitalise on the 1.3M people who visit our region each year. Registrations for the 2019/20 Wagga Tourism Partner Program are now open and with visitors injecting more than $353M into the local economy each year, there’s never been a better time to get involved.
The program is open to join year-round, but partners must be registered by 19 June 2019 to be included in the annual Visitor Guide. The guide is released in spring each year, with 20,000 copies distributed across NSW, Victoria, ACT, South Australia and Queensland. “The Wagga Tourism Partner Program offers a broad range of benefits to both local businesses and neighbouring councils,” Council’s Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said. “Partners are included in marketing activities and promotional campaigns, as well as business development opportunities such as networking, workshops and masterclasses with industry experts.
“Industry development and support is a vital part of the program so local businesses are able to learn and grow. “In addition to the visitor guide, there are extensive print and digital promotional opportunities for partners throughout the year, including social media campaigns, events, media promotions and more.” Participation in the Wagga Tourism Partner Program has doubled since the initiative began in 2016. For Bidgee Strawberries and Cream operators Michael and Kylie Cashen, joining the program proved to be the perfect way to put their new business on the map. “Becoming Wagga Tourism Partners opened our minds to a number of

unforeseen opportunities, including the advice and support from the professional team,” the Cashens said. “We would have no hesitation in recommending the partner program to others involved with tourism in the region as we collectively strive to offer more to our visitors, so they stay longer and return more often.” Businesses and other organisations can learn more about the Wagga Tourism Partner Program and download a prospectus at visitwagga.com/partners. Those who register for the 2019/20 program by 19 June 2019 will be included in the Official Visitor Guide.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR STEAM THE MUSEUM PROGRAM
A Museum of the Riverina program has shared top honours at the Museum & Gallery National Awards (MAGNA) in Alice Springs on 15 May. STEAM the Museum was the joint overall national winner and also took out the Interpretation, Learning and Audience Engagement category. The program saw Regional Museum Officer Sam Leah work with Sturt Public School students to interpret the Museum of the Riverina’s social history collections using tools
and techniques drawn from the STEAM field (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). The aims of the project were: • Curate a professional exhibition in partnership with schoolchildren, placing their ideas and interpretations at the forefront of the curation process. • Provide extended learning opportunities to the students to provide them with the skills they needed to complete their exhibits, including 3D printing,
virtual reality animation, tour design, robotics and video game design and coding. • Provide introductory experiences for the local community in technologies that are not readily accessible in a regional location, particularly 3D printing, robotics and coding. “STEAM the Museum was a participatory project that saw the students plan and curate the exhibition,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN Wagga City Council currently has a number of policy documents on public exhibition to allow you, the ratepayer, the opportunity to make comment on.
This is a requirement under the act. One such policy document is the Code of Meeting Practice. This policy would not inspire the majority of people to read the document or get excited. However, buried in the document is detail
that is not clearly stated, that is, the desire by some to remove the Council prayer. While the exhibited document just has ‘Council prayer’ in blue text, on the surface means optional. What the policy doesn’t say is that there is an intent to remove the Council prayer from our meetings or replace

it with some ‘inclusive motherhood statement’, not even referring to God or Christianity. In the 2016 census, 52 per cent of Wagga stated they were Christian, by far the largest single group, plus a majority of the population. Our nation and constitution was written and based on
Educators mark Family Day Care milestones A special celebration took place recently for two Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care Educators, with a mother and daughter both recognised for long service milestones. Denise Pallett was honoured for 30 years as an Educator and her daughter Renee Gurtner marked five years of service. The mother-daughter duo and nine other Educators were recognised on 8 May at an awards morning tea and play session as part of National Family Day Care Week. Denise began as an Early Childhood Educator in 1989, giving her the opportunity to work while looking after her young family. Having grown up surrounded by the children in her mother’s care, Renee made the decision to open her Family Day Care service in 2013. “I decided to become an Educator because for as far as I can remember, I have always had children around me in my life,” Renee said. “I was four years old when my mother started her business. It’s funny how life has a plan for everyone as I also became an Educator when my son was four years old. “I love seeing children grow and develop from babies to going off to the first day of school.”
Christian values, our federal parliament has the Lord’s Prayer, as do other levels of government. This attack on such fundamental observations is ongoing and I urge you to go to the Council site and lodge your objection to any change from our current prayer, or
simply replace it with the Lord’s Prayer. Each and every person has the right to their own opinion and must be respected, however, this is more leftist ideology sneaking in to undermine and destroy the fabric of our society. Submissions are open
until 10 June, so there is not much time. Go to the Council website wagga.nsw.gov.au/ public, email or call a councillor or email council@wagga.nsw. gov.au.

THIRTY YEARS: Educator Denise Pallett reads to children during the National Family Day Care Week service awards on 8 May. Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care is coordinated by Wagga Wagga City Council and has operated in the city since 1975. “Council is always looking for new Educators to help grow the service and provide care for more families across the city,” Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care Manager Kym Stewart said. “Family Day Care allows you to work from home and build a successful business. Educators are provided with local resources, support and training through a partnership with Council’s coordination unit.”
Anyone interested in becoming an Educator can contact Council’s coordination unit on 6926 9367, email fdc@wagga.nsw.gov.au or visit wagga.nsw.gov.au.
