Weekly information from us to you
W H E E LY B I G FU N! Wagga Wagga kids have given the city’s first pump track a big thumbs up. The track at Emblen Park in Tolland was officially opened on Wednesday with some of the city’s best young bike riders on hand to show off their skills on two wheels. Kids of all ages, and even some adults, joined in on pairs racing competitions, where two riders would compete head-to-head to see who could pedal the fastest around the figure-eight circuit. Cycling proved to be hungry work, with residents tucking into more than 200 sausage sandwiches at the event, cooked by Council staff. Members from the Wagga Wagga Mountain Bike Club were on hand with a free bicycle maintenance stall, fixing everything from wobbly handlebars to flat tyres on more than 50 bicycles and scooters. Kids also enjoyed fun packs provided by Wagga Wagga’s Family and Community Services (FACS). Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM was joined by FACS Murrumbidgee Manager - Housing Services Michael Whiteside and Wagga Wagga Police Acting Inspector Maggie Deall to officially open the track. The track has been funded by a $50,000 grant through the FACS Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) and a $30,000 contribution from Wagga Wagga City Council.

More time to have your say Submissions on the draft revised Wagga Wagga Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan can now be made until 5pm, Wednesday 6 December. The additional two weeks will allow community members, industry and other stakeholders more time to review the draft documents and finalise their submissions. “Council resolved at the October Ordinary Meeting to place the draft revised study and
plan on public exhibition for a minimum of 28 days, which ensured we had the flexibility to extend the submission time if needed,” Wagga Wagga City Council General Manager James Bolton said. “We want to make sure everyone has the time to make a considered submission, so the timeframe has now been extended following feedback from the community. “We understand these are detailed and technical documents that will be in place for a number of years, so it is important we hear from as many community members as possible before they are adopted. “I encourage all community members, especially those who live or work on the
floodplain, to take the time to read through the documents and make a submission. “If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of the draft revised study and plan, please contact us on 1300 292 442. “With the extended submission time, we have also arranged another community popin session on Thursday, 30 November in the Council Meeting Room from 4pm to 7pm.” To view the draft revised Wagga Wagga Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan and make a submission, visit www. wagga.nsw.gov.au/waggafloodplain. Talking Machines named best exhibition in the state The Museum of the Riverina has snared its second major award of the year, with Talking Machines being named the best exhibition project from small and medium museums across the state. Museum & Galleries NSW’s IMAGinE awards were presented on Friday 10 November at the Australian Museum in Sydney. A cultural facility of Wagga Wagga City Council, the Museum of the Riverina took home the award ahead of exhibitions from Old Government House, Albury LibraryMuseum and Hurstville Museum. The Museum of the Riverina’s groundbreaking exhibition We Are Here: Riverina LGBTIQ Stories was also shortlisted for the best exhibition category, following on from its Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Award at the Local Government NSW awards in August. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the award was recognition for the many people who contributed to Talking Machines, which took two years to put together.
“Talking Machines captured the histories and stories of generations of Australian men and women who farmed the Riverina, transforming a harsh environment into a productive one with their ingenuity and persistence,” Ms Summerhayes said. “A key part of Talking Machines was a film project, which fired up old machines and spoke to the people who used them right across the Riverina. There’s also a book that shares those stories and curriculumtargeted education resources for high school students.” Council received a $150,000 Regional Partnerships grant from Create NSW for the Museum of the Riverina to partner with the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences, Museums & Galleries NSW, Oral History NSW, an award-winning local filmmaker, regional cultural consultants and 10 community museums across Eastern and Western Riverina. The City of Good Sports is looking for the next inductees into the prestigious Sporting Hall of Fame, with nominations open now. Since 1993 Wagga Wagga City Council’s Sporting Hall of Fame has recognised the outstanding achievements of local athletes who have reached the highest level of their chosen sport. The Sporting Hall of Fame champions some of the city’s most well-known sportspeople, including its first Olympic gold medallist Alicia Quirk (Women’s Rugby Sevens), former Matildas team member Sally Shipard (soccer), Paul Kelly (AFL), Michael Slater (cricket), Geoff Lawson (cricket) and Steve and Chris
Mortimer (rugby league). Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM urged community members to nominate someone for the Sporting Hall of Fame especially for the Local Legend category, which is only open every three years. “Wagga Wagga is known as the City of Good Sports and we are lucky to have so many sportspeople who have reached the pinnacles of their careers,” Cr Conkey said. “Being inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame reflects the valuable contribution the nominee has made to their sport and to our community. “Importantly, the Local Legend
category recognises the tireless local sporting coordinators, advocates and volunteers who work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wagga Wagga continues to be home to so many high level athletes.” Nomination forms for Sporting Hall of Fame induction are available from the Civic Centre Customer Service desk or at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/ sportinghalloffame. Nominations close at 5pm, Monday 11 December. DRAINAGE UPGRADE: Council’s Cadet Engineer Sam Hickey looks over the completed drains in Baylis Street.
No more wet feet in Baylis Street after drain upgrades
Pedestrians will no longer need to navigate around large puddles on Baylis Street following the completion of new footpath drains. The new drains have been installed at the four centre-of-block pedestrian crossings in the main street, with the final drain put in place last week. The iron-grated drains will help reduce large puddles forming on the footpaths in Baylis Street during heavy rain events. “The drains have been installed on the east and west sides of each crossings from Edward Street to Morrow Street and will redirect surface water into the existing stormwater system,” Manager Project Operations Bruce Sheridan said. October as part of Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan highlighted the benefits of the new drains. “Council recently received feedback on how the drains have helped improve accessibility for members of the community with disabilities and their carers,” Mr Sheridan said. “Previously, people in wheelchairs or who use walkers were restricted to using one side of the footpath due to the large puddles. The new drains have gone a long way to eliminating this issue and allowing pedestrians to move more freely and safely in the CBD.” The $100,000 drainage works was part of an overall improvement program for Baylis Street.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
As this is my last column before Christmas, I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2018! I also would like to say a great big thank you to all
the helpers on Sunday 29 October Graffiti Removal Day. Senior Constable Peter Narouz, Crime Prevention Officer, Wagga Wagga Local Area Command worked very hard to make the day a great success. Also Peter’s helpers who manned the barbecues to make sure all were looked after, members of Sunrise Rotary for their
great work this year, Wayne Deaner and members of Neighbourhood Watch who worked to find a large amount of graffiti. I also must mention Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire and his great helper William Houghton who not only removes graffiti on the removal day, but also helps throughout the year.
councillor.braid@wagga.nsw.gov.au
William looks out for road signage that has been damaged by graffiti as this can be very dangerous. I am aware that we still have a lot of graffiti to remove and I know that all of the above will continue to help. I remind you to advise me if you know where graffiti is; just give me a phone call on 0402 214 556.
Also if you are aware of anyone carrying out graffiti, please contact Wagga police immediately If you are able to help us to remove existing graffiti, please also call me. •••• Our new General Manager Peter Thompson will be commencing at Council at the end of November.
I wish you all the very best Peter, and also a big thank you to both Robert Knight and James Bolton for their huge efforts filling in as General Manager. I know how hard it would have been Robert, and still is James!
Councillor Yvonne Braid
Community survey results are released The community’s level of satisfaction with Council services and facilities has remained steady over the past two years. Residents from across the Local Government Area took part in the 2017 Community Survey, with 77 per cent somewhat satisfied with Council’s performance, on par with the 2015 survey result of 80 per cent. “Overall, there was at least a moderate level of satisfaction with most of Council’s services and facilities,” General Manager James Bolton said. “Twenty of the 27 services and facilities tested received a mean score of three or more out of five. “The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Museum of the Riverina, Civic Theatre and Wagga Wagga City Library were rated highly by the community, with a 97 per cent level of satisfaction.” The community
survey is undertaken about every two years by an independent research provider and measures Council’s performance against the priorities identified in the Community Strategic Plan (CSP). This year’s survey was the first since the new CSP Wagga View was adopted and included new or updated questions. Mr Bolton said the results where there was a gap between the satisfaction and importance scores helped Council identify opportunities to improve. “The survey results help us plan for the future by allowing us to understand how we can better allocate resources, and improve both service levels and strategic planning,” General Manager James Bolton said. “The key areas for improvement are maintenance of local roads, financial management, long-term
planning for Wagga Wagga, car parking and maintenance of footpaths. “We are already starting to see a lot of changes in some of these areas. The Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy 2040 has been adopted and the implementation plan will roll out, while the Activation Strategy and Recreation and Open Space and Community Strategy will also ensure Wagga Wagga grows sustainably.” The independent survey was conducted through a random phone sample of 500 residents that represent the community’s demographics based on the 2016 Census data. The survey was also offered online with no significant variation in the phone and online survey. Visit www.wagga. nsw.gov.au/ communitysurvey to view the full survey results.
