The Tip Shop doors open this weekend
Community members thinking of a trip to the Tip Shop during life outside of lockdown now have some good news. Wagga Wagga City Council’s popular reuse and recycling facility at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) is open again from 8am on Saturday, 18 September. Council staff are expecting this to be a busy weekend and are urging visitors to the shop to be aware that there are still restrictions in place that are in line with the current NSW Public Health Orders. A COVID marshal will be available to assist members of the public in adhering to a few simple rules to keep everyone safe and healthy. Here’s what to expect: • Wear a mask • Sign in required •K eep your social distance •R estricted numbers if the shop reaches capacity •C ash and EFTPOS accepted
GWMC’s Mat Windle said customers will not be able to reserve items, or place items aside. “Those lined up to pay for their items must stick to the ‘if you can carry it, you can buy it’ rule. We do not reserve items, put aside items and items cannot keep your place in line,” Mr Windle said. “Once you have purchased your items you must leave via the gates and, if you wish to return for another look, you may be required to line up at the gate again. “We urge everyone to be thoughtful of others and to respect the advice given by our COVID marshals who are there to help keep the community safe.” People with items to drop off are advised to park their car and let a staff member know. Staff will check items and then advise where to drop off. The Tip Shop’s hours are: Saturday, Sunday and Monday 8am-4pm (weather permitting).
Head out for a zootastic time these school holidays With spring in the air, the Botanic Gardens and Zoo & Aviary are a great destination to visit over the school holidays. The Zoo & Aviary will be open seven days a week across the holiday period, subject to NSW Health restrictions, and will be holding zoo tours on Mondays and Fridays. Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara said there are some new and improved facilities to enjoy, animals to see and, of course the chance to meet the zoo’s marsupial superstar, Russell the wombat. “Russell had missed meeting his regular fans and new visitors during the recent lockdown and is happy to be out and about again,” Ms McNamara said. “He’ll be going out on his daily walk on his lead and harness, and we will also be holding the meet and greet sessions at 10am and 2pm each day at his enclosure. “Our two young Eastern Grey kangaroos, Noni and Judd, are out in the

Community benefits in new library model New and expanded services to suburbs and rural villages in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area are among the many benefits of a standalone Wagga Wagga City Library service to start from July 2022. At the 13 September Ordinary Meeting, Council resolved to approve a standalone library service to be implemented on the expiry of the current Riverina Regional Library Deed of Agreement as at 30 June 2022. Community feedback received during the recent Library Review indicated that there was a growing need for the library service to respond to the current and growing population needs of the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. An increase in multicultural services along with the establishment of a new agile library service that would provide weekly services to suburban and rural village communities in the LGA were identified as priorities. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the model for a new standalone service is the result

of Council progressing with the priority actions outlined in the adopted Cultural Plan and Library Review. “There has been a considerable amount of community consultation undertaken that has informed this decision and delivering the best possible library service here in our community no matter where you live in the Local Government Area is our goal,” Ms Summerhayes said. “At the heart of this decision is the commitment by Council to provide our residents and ratepayers with a library service that is responsive and flexible to the needs of our diverse community. “The increase in library services includes expanding services across seven days to offer more life-long learning opportunities, increasing multicultural, community literacy and technology services and programs and the rollout of a new weekly agile library van service to suburbs across the city and to rural village communities in our local government area.”

EXHIBITIONS EXTENDED AT WAGGA WAGGA ART GALLERY
Wagga Wagga Art Gallery has announced it will extend its current series of exhibitions until next month to give residents and visitors to the city more time to see the stunning works in a COVID-19 safe space. The Art Gallery reopened its doors last Saturday (11 September) after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders were lifted in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. Dr Lee-Anne Hall, Director Art Gallery said the shows had only been on exhibition for three weeks before the NSW lockdown came into effect in August. “We wanted to
ensure everyone would still have plenty of opportunity to view these exhibitions before they closed, so we have extended the dates out to the second-half of October,” Dr Hall said. “There are so many beautiful and inspiring works to see, from the large-scale river scenes by artist Mark Dober in Murrumbidgee, to the works on paper and clothes by First Nations artist Kelly Koumalatsos in Gung | Create, Make, Do, Love. “Amanda Bromfield’s exhibition about a young nun who ran away from Mount Erin Convent in 1920, has been very popular, as has Windowless Worlds exhibition at
the National Art Glass Gallery. “We also have some amazing pieces on display in the Margaret Carnegie Gallery as part of Made/ Worn: Australian Contemporary Jewellery, exhibiting the work of 22 artists working in contemporary jewellery in Australia.” The Art Gallery Shop is also open for business, with the shelves and cabinets featuring works by local, regional, and Australian artists and artisans, from ceramics and jewellery to a new array of glass works. The Art Gallery has also created digital
resources featuring short films of artists and curators talking about their work, available on its website. “We also have ‘Take Off for 5’ which has short videos that you can find on our Facebook and Instagram pages talking about art,” Dr Hall said. “It’s targeted at children and includes an artmaking activity people can do at home.” In line with NSW Public Health Orders, visitors to the gallery will need to check-in on arrival using the QR code and wear a mask at all times. Reusable products rebate success Council’s reusable nappy and menstrual products rebate has proven popular with the community, with over 100 rebates successfully processed since the initiative kicked off in July 2021. The six-month trial rebate gives residents from the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area the opportunity to receive a rebate for half the cost of reusable nappies and menstrual products purchased between 1 July 2021 and 1 January 2022, up to the value of $100 per user. Director Regional Activation Michael Keys said he was pleased with the rebate’s success, and encouraged the community get their applications in before the trial ends. “To date, we’ve received a
total of 111 rebate submissions and paid out $8218 in rebates,” Mr Keys said. “We want to support as many people as we can in making the switch to reusable products. “It helps our community financially, and helps keep disposable products out of landfill. “It’s an easy online process, so we’re hoping to receive many more submissions over the next three months.” In addition to the rebate, Council is running a series of online expert-led workshops, where attendees can discover the different types of reusable products, how to use them and where to purchase them.
