Lorraine O’Hara’s new solo exhibition Colourful Wonderful officially opened on Wednesday 16 June inside the E3 art space at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The exhibition showcases the local artist’s interpretation of the intriguing world around us, through Ms O’Hara’s use of painterly brush marks and colour play to showcase endless possibilities. Ms O’Hara is an established artist from Temora, who has exhibited in numerous exhibitions across the region over the years. She is one of the practising artists at The Art Factory Studio in Wagga Wagga, which supports professional development for artists with a disability and also provides artists with guidance, mentoring, networks and career paths to assist in further establishing and maintaining a contemporary arts practice. Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said Colourful Wonderful is one of a series of short exhibitions being held at the E3 art space over the winter months. “We have five regional artists featured in these shows, which run for two weeks each in May, June and July,” Dr Hall said. “It’s an opportunity to showcase the beautiful, expressive and thought-provoking series of works being created by the talented artists we have in the eastern Riverina. “We encourage everyone to come and have a look at each of these exhibitions and be inspired, moved and delighted by these pieces on display.” Colourful Wonderful will be on exhibition at E3 until Sunday 20 June 2021. VIBRANT CREATIONS: Artist Lorraine O’Hara is thrilled to have her first solo exhibition, which is currently on show at the E3 art space at the Civic Centre.
New community hub for local groups The site will be cleared to make way for the new rooms which will also accommodate University of the Third Age (UA3) members and other groups who utilised the Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club (WVVMC) premises in Morgan Street. Council Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said approval to proceed with the chosen site for the new facility would benefit the whole community.

Council support for Lake Run and Ride Wagga Wagga City Council will continue its support for the popular Lake Run and Ride community event which next year marks 40 years since the first race was held in the city. Councillors agreed to enter into a new Memorandum of Understanding with Wagga Lake Run and Ride Incorporated to provide ongoing support of the event for a period of five years, starting in 2021/22. Council will also allocate $2000 annual funding to the event for the duration of the MOU. The Wagga Wagga Lake Run and Ride is one of the city’s largest annual participation events and one of the largest free fun run and family cycle events in
Australia. Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said the event started in 1972 and promotes a healthy active lifestyle for families. “The event attracts more than 1500 registered participants each year and many thousands of spectators along the course,” Mr Cook said. “There’s a large number of volunteers who assist on the day and local businesses donate their services for
the event. “It is a very well supported community event and also attracts a number of visitors to the city.” The event starts and finishes at Apex Park, Lake Albert, on the last Sunday in September. The finish area hosts a Sports, Fitness and Health Expo where cycling, running, fitness and related groups have the opportunity to showcase their offerings. Local food vendors also provide their services.

Protecting native fish populations at city's lagoon and wetlands
Marrambidya Wetlands Monitoring of native fish populations and improving their habitat in Wollundry Lagoon and Marrambidya Wetlands will be undertaken by Wagga Wagga City Council for two days next week. A Council contractor will conduct electrofishing at both venues to reduce invasive European carp populations and to gather indicative data of native fish populations. European carp are a large introduced freshwater fish which are common throughout most of NSW. They are well known as a pest species because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits, which stir up sediments, reduce water quality and damage habitat for native fish existing in the same eco-system. Council’s Manager Environment and Regulatory Services Mark Gardiner said

All carp are then captured with dip nets, humanely placed into an icy slush and then taken to fertiliser manufacturer Charlie Carp. All other non-targeted fauna will be left in the water and monitored until species swim away. Council staff will be located on the bank to ensure community safety and to answer any questions. the electrofishing activity is a routine control practice, that is commonly used by State and territory agencies and commercial fisheries. “The natural habitat and native fish are suffering because of the presence of carp in those two water systems,” Mr Gardiner said. “It is well known that carp are a pest species and are quite destructive. “Council used this same procedure eight years ago and it is endorsed as the safest and most humane procedure to manage carp without damaging existing infrastructure and habitat. “The other advantage is that it gives us a chance to gather indicative data of native fish populations.” Mr Gardiner said Wollundry Lagoon is a designated Aboriginal Place and Council

NSW Netball commits to Masters’ titles in Wagga Wagga Netballers from across the state will converge on Wagga Wagga later this year after NSW Netball confirmed this week the city will host the 2021 Masters State Titles and Netball NSW Social Masters. The events will run concurrently and be hosted by the Wagga Wagga Netball Association on Saturday and Sunday, 16-17 October, at the Exhibition Centre’s indoor and outdoor courts. Netball NSW took both the Masters State Titles and Social Masters to Tamworth in 2019, and after the 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19, the organisation is excited to return to regional NSW again in 2021. Competitions Manager Claire Dale said it was important to take competitions to different parts of the state as NSW Netball has large numbers of participants in every region. "We had a brilliant weekend when we headed north of Sydney to Tamworth in 2019, and we can't wait to head south to Wagga Wagga in 2021,” Ms Dale said. “Like Tamworth, Wagga Wagga has fantastic indoor and outdoor facilities which can accommodate everyone, from those looking to play in a competitive environment, to those just looking for some social fun. "It was very disappointing that we had to cancel last year's competitions due to COVID-19 but it is a great news story that we are now able to return. "We look forward to working with the Wagga Wagga Netball Association and Wagga Wagga City Council over the next few months in the run-up to what promises to be a fantastic twoday festival of netball." Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM said it was pleasing to see Netball NSW supporting regional centres, and in particular committing to Wagga Wagga after the cancellation of the event last year. “We’re delighted to host these events and look forward to welcoming NSW Netball and all participants to our great city,” Cr Conkey said. “We are a regional capital city which is
