Laneway to come to life in winter A new micro-festival is shining a light on a forgotten part of the city and giving you a reason to celebrate, rather than hibernate, this winter. Cadell Place, located behind Fitzmaurice Street, will be transformed on Saturday 23 June with a series of four murals on local businesses to be unveiled, along with live music, entertainment, food stalls and more. Lost Lanes will feature music from local musicians Cello Riot and Phoebe & Steve, as well as other entertainment and winterthemed food and beverage offerings from Cave BBQ, Haran’s Patisserie, Knights Meats & Deli, CSU Wines, Thirsty Crow, Coolamon

Cheese and Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory. “Lost Lanes is about getting out and discovering everything our city and region has to offer year-round,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said. “Cadell Place will be transformed with warm open fires, roving entertainers and free live music and there will be no need to stay at home in front of the heater, with plenty of good food matched with a mulled wine or a hot chocolate to warm you up.” Keeping warm certainly won’t be a problem at the Thirsty Crow, who will also be holding their annual Fire in the Hole competition on the night. Head Brewer Craig Wealands said after seeing the success of Fitz Live, Thirsty Crow
was excited to be involved with Lost Lanes. “When I first heard about the Lost Lanes concept I was fully on board,” he said. “Wagga’s four seasons are so diverse and in winter we should definitely celebrate it rather than hibernate for three months. “I’m looking forward to rugging up and checking out the new murals, listening to local live music and eating my fair share of food and, of course, beers.” Matthew Thompson (Thirsty Crow), Keo Match (Knights Meats), Reuben Broughtwood (Cadell Place) and Ignacio Querejeta (Prince of Wales) were selected by the local businesses to create the murals along their rear walls following an expression of interest process earlier this year. “A long-lasting impact of Lost Lanes will
be four murals on Cadell Place that can be seen while you walk along the Wiradjuri Walking Track, adding to the vibrancy of the Fitzmaurice Street precinct which we hope will contribute toward deterring graffiti,” Ms Hamilton said. “Lost Lanes is another great example of what can be achieved through Council and local businesses working closely through our Tourism Partner Program.” Businesses and other organisations can sign up for the Wagga Tourism Partner Program at any time during the year, but to be included in the 2018/19 Visitor Guide they will need to join by 13 June. M A K ING THE S WITCH TO IMPROV E D S TRE E T LIGHTING At Monday night’s Council monthly meeting it was resolved to give in-principle support to Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils (REROC) to continue to negotiate the development of the Southern Lights Project. The initiative aims to replace approximately 70,000 street lights with state-of-the-art LED lighting and smart control technologies across 40 local government areas covering a large portion of southern NSW. Similar projects that have been carried out in recent years in regional Victoria and northern NSW have demonstrated significant benefits. Manager Environment and City Compliance Mark Gardiner said the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area has 7000 street lights. “There’s no doubt changing to LED street lighting would provide a number of benefits including significant reduction in energy consumption, reduced carbon emissions, reduced maintenance costs and provide better quality lighting,” he said. “Similar projects that have been carried out in recent years in Victoria and northern NSW have demonstrated significant benefits.” Southern Lights Project partners include REROC, Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils, Central NSW Councils and Canberra Region Joint Organisation.

New hydraulic transport cages a safety boost for Rangers and dogs Wagga Wagga City Council Rangers have hailed Council’s investment into two new vehicles fitted with hydraulic transport cages saying they are a positive step towards minimising animal stress and improving work health and safety. City Compliance Coordinator Brett Burt said the Australian-made K9 Kube hydraulic transport cages, have been used to transport 54 dogs in a five-week period by Council Rangers. “Some of the heaviest dogs were a mastiff who weighed more than 70kg and a very overweight Labrador of about the same weight. “Manually lifting and/or unloading
these sometimes struggling dogs can be dangerous to the Rangers and increases the likelihood of injuries considerably.” “With safety in mind, one ranger of any size or shape, can lift a dog – from Jack Russells to English mastiffs – single handily, with nearly zero chance of being bitten or sustaining musculo-skeletal injury. “The Kube has other advantages in that it reduces the total time needed to remove, transport and unload the animal, and only one staff member is needed to operate it. “In the past, animals were lifted manually, usually by one ranger, leaving the ranger open to being injured and stressing the

animal. Using the hydraulic Kube removes the likelihood of a stressed dog biting a ranger or injuring itself trying to jump out of the old cage. We have found the whole process less stressful for the animals.” The Kube features a cage which is lifted off the back of the vehicle with a remote control-operated hydraulic lift. Once it is lowered to the ground the dog can easily move in to the ventilated cage which measures 1140cm high, 1400cm long and 1390cm wide. K9 Kubes were manufactured by a Swan Hill firm who has supplied nearly a hundred units to local councils across Australia.

All indoor pools are now open after six weeks of maintenance works at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre. Oasis Centre Manager Maurice Eames said the program pool, 25m pool, leisure pool/round pool and the two toddler pools were each closed and emptied at alternate times while expansion joints were replaced and repaired. “Maintenance on the expansion joints is required every 10 years and it is done
to ensure that the pools do not leak and also to minimise the risk of injury to pool users,” he said. “The works went smoothly and were completed as scheduled; all the pools are now open and fully operational for the cooler winter months ahead. “The 50m outdoor pool remained open until the end of last week (11 May) and many people took advantage of the warm autumn weather for a late season swim.”

RECONCILIATION MONUMENT TO BE UNVEILED AT SORRY DAY
To mark this year’s National Sorry Day, Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Isabel Reid and Wagga Wagga City Council will unveil a unique monument to acknowledge and pay respect to those impacted by forced removal policies. The monument – a large rock cradling a commemorative plaque – will be unveiled on Friday 25 May at the Wollundry Lagoon.
National Sorry Day is held annually on 26 May to remember the historical mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The day provides a chance for people to come together in the healing process for the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their family and communities. “National Sorry Day is a time to pay respect to and remember all those who have been impacted
by government policies of forcible removal that have resulted in the Stolen Generations,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “Today many of these stolen generations live in our community, now as our Elders. As a testament to their strength and their stories, the community is invited to join me in the unveiling of the Sorry Day Rock, which has been put
in place to honour and recognise this history in our city and our country. “On behalf of Wagga Wagga City Council I hope through acknowledging National Sorry Day each year together, we aide healing and emotional wellbeing for individuals, families and communities across the country,” he said. A highly regarded local Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Isabel Reid is the chair of
the Cootamundra Girls Home Corporation and has worked tirelessly to progress the recommendations of the “Bringing Them Home Report” that was tabled in Federal Parliament on 26 May 1997. Held annually since 1998, National Sorry Day was born out of a key recommendation made by the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families in the
report. Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony on 25 May from 10.30am at Wolllundry Lagoon. PAVING THE WAY: More than 2000 tonnes of asphalt has been laid at Urana Street, with works to be complete by 22 May.

The Urana Street road rehabilitation is scheduled to be complete by Tuesday 22 May, with the laying of the top wearing course of asphalt starting on Friday 18 May. More than 2000 tonnes of asphalt has been laid so far with crews working through
about 230m of road each shift. The new road will be have about 200mm of asphalt, with two lower structural layers of asphalt and the top wearing course. Urana Street will remain closed between Bourke and Mitchelmore streets during
business hours until the end of works on 22 May. Temporary traffic control measures will remain in place on Blamey Street at the Turvey Park School during school zone hours. wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads

Take the time to have a look at the path to and from Forest Hill offered by the old rail corridor and the longer path being proposed along roads which will take you away from the city before bringing you back. One is good. One is not. I should point out that I have been a long time supporter of rail trail projects and I am currently on the board of the Riverina Highland Rail Trails. It is with this experience that I can say that the Wagga Active Travel Plan is an initiative to promote cycling and active travel in our city. It is not a rail trail and the real possibility that we will end up with a poor cycleway to Forest Hill due to the confusion of a few people is disappointing to say the least.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Museum of the Riverina and local TAFE NSW students are both beneficiaries of a pathway improvement project underway at the museum’s Botanic Gardens site. The collaborative project involves the construction of a concrete path at the Botanic Garden’s site by seven TAFE NSW students undertaking the Certificate II in Construction Pathways. Museum Manager Luke Grealy said the new concrete path replaces a well-worn track from the museum front door to a newly installed gate which provides convenient access to the miniature railway’s museum station in the Botanic Gardens. “The gate installed recently by the Society of Model Engineers complements the new all-weather path
