FIRST PRINTED SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 2016

Weekly information from us to you

s n o l e m e d a p Pint -sized zoo j o i n t he They might not be the biggest, the tallest or the strangest looking, but they sure are cute. Two pint-sized pademelons are the newest additions to the animal family at the Wagga Wagga Zoo and Aviary. One female and one male marsupial have this week been relocated from Gosford to their new home at the Botanic Gardens. “It’s always an exciting time when a new animal is added to our Wagga zoo family,” Supervisor Horticulture Mick Cave. “Pademelons are widespread in Tasmania, but are extinct, other than those in captivity, on the mainland due to

predation of foxes. “Because of their rarity, and cuteness, we hope they will be something different for the zoo visitors to enjoy.” Pademelons are stocky animals with a relatively short tail and legs that help them to bounce around. They range in colour from dark-brown to grey-brown and feed on a diet of herbs, grasses and moss. The furry friends were released into their new Botanic Gardens home on Friday 18 November. To see the new duo, or any of the other great animals at the Wagga Wagga Zoo and Aviary, head to the Botanic Gardens site, open from 9am to 5pm daily.

What’s in a name? There are some new friends at the zoo, but we’re not quite on a first name basis. Can you help name the city’s new friendly pademelon duo? Residents can make a suggestion in the naming competition by heading over to the City of Wagga Wagga’s Facebook page, facebook.com/waggacouncil. Only suitable suggestions will be considered. CUTE AND CUDDLY: Wagga Wagga Zoo and Aviary Zoo Curator Rachel Ehsman with one of the two new pademelons who now call the Botanic Gardens home.

Wagga View vision comes to life It’s been a busy few months for the Wagga View team. Earlier in the year the team were out and about across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area (LGA) collecting your ideas, thoughts and opinions on how our city can be even better in the future. This feedback has now been reviewed and collated

in to what will be the city’s new Community Strategic Plan (CSP). This plan paints a picture of what we all want for the future of our city and provides strategies on how we can all get there. The proposed draft of this plan is now ready. From next week the Wagga View team will be inviting community feedback on this draft. “Residents are asked to share opinions with the team on what has been captured

in the plan, and if it reflects what the community told us earlier in the year,” Corporate Strategy Coordinator and Wagga View team member Serena Wallace said. “The time is now to make this vision come to life. We have started working with businesses and organisations to make the plan happen, now it’s over to the community to share their thoughts for the future of the city.” Continued inside

COUNCILLOR COLUMN Firstly I would like to thank all of those wonderful citizens that have taken the time to thank me for my time as Mayor of this great city. My family and myself have been very grateful to have the honour to be Mayor of Wagga Wagga for four wonderful and very full years. We wish Mayor Greg Conkey and all Councillors

and staff our support during this term of Council. A term that promises to build many of those projects for which the groundwork was laid down over the last term. This week I attended the launch of the Girls at the Centre program that has been incorporated into Mount Austin High School. This program is run by that great children’s education charity, the Smith Family. This program will be mainly directed towards Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander girls with positive role models from within and outside the local community, provide a range of resources and activities that will lead to improved educational but more importantly employment outcomes for these young women. This program will compliment the Clontarf Foundation program at this school that works with the young men to achieve the same outcomes. We are now seeing very significant employment and further

councillor.kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au

education outcomes for all students at Mt Austin as a result of the hard work by both of these programs, the staff at Mt Austin and particularly Susan Lockwood the principal who continues to have the foresight to invest in these programs. They are breaking the cycle of disadvantage that will give great benefits to this community and to the individuals and their families. It is a real pleasure to be patron of this

program. Lastly but not least a small mention of Council-owned businesses. The last term of Council determined that each of the commercial business arms owned and operated by Council should aim to make a positive return (social &/or monetary) to this community, as is the aim of all business ventures. This means that we must look carefully at the commercial arrangements that are in place and where necessary

make some adjustments to the operations of the business over an agreed time frame to achieve positive outcomes. In doing so we must be mindful of the correct accounting practices and take into account all costs, including depreciation, which accounts for the future reconstruction and renewal of the current infrastructure.

FUTURE FOCUS: Local high school captains, Miss Wagga Wagga Sarah Navin and Community Princess Jessica Smith, senior Council staff and Councillors talked all things youth at a special Mayoral breakfast at the Civic Centre on Thursday.

Young leaders’ voices are heard The students became the teachers at a Mayoral breakfast for school leaders at the Civic Centre on Thursday. Councillors and senior Council staff listened intently as captains from local high schools shared their experiences about Wagga Wagga. From playgrounds to public transport, the round table discussion covered a wide range of talking points including City of Wagga Wagga’s facilities, services and programs and broader issues in the community. “The message from fellow Councillors, staff and myself is that ‘we’re here and we’re listening’,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “We asked a lot of questions from what they like about Wagga to what they think needs work, as well as talking about a number of youth-

related issues. “Hearing the maturity and thought that all of the school captains put into their responses shows that Wagga’s future certainly is bright.” Also joining the breakfast discussion were newly crowned Miss Wagga Wagga Sarah Navin and Community Princess Jessica Smith, who shared their experiences and participated in the discussion. Cr Conkey extended his thanks to all who took part and the captains and staff from the participating high schools – Mount Austin, Wagga, Kooringal, Mater Dei, Kildare, Wagga Christian College and The Riverina Anglican College. Plans are under way to organise a second youth engagement session in the new year, with the possibility of making it a regular event.

PET WEEK

OF THE

L O R D B A D E N P O W E L L D R I V E U P DAT E Repair works are progressing on schedule at Lord Baden Powell Drive (pictured) after the road was ravaged by record rainfall over winter and early spring. The source of the problem was found about two metres underground, with water seeping from the rocky area that the road was originally constructed on. While works are scheduled to be completed next week, Lord Baden Powell Drive will remain closed to allow Council to repair the intersection at Lake Albert Road. Commercial Operations Sector Manager Caroline

Angel said about 650sqm of existing bitumen will be replaced with 250 tonnes of asphalt. “We ask the community to be patient as this will mean Lord Baden Powell Drive is closed for slightly longer than originally planned,” she said. “These works are scheduled to begin on 30 November and should take less than a week, weather permitting.” Due to the current road surface condition, Council has scheduled for the intersection to be remediated with thick asphalt.

Considering the high volume of traffic movements at this intersection, asphalt is the preferred material of choice. The works are similar to recent projects at roundabouts on Red Hill Road and Tarcutta Street earlier this year. The timing also aligns with contractor Fulton Hogan being in Wagga to complete asphalt works on Glenfield Road, which begins tomorrow, 20 November. Council reminds residents to abide by the road closure signage as traffic through the area may damage the repair works.

Say hi to Rosie Rosie is a charming girl who’s about 12 months old. She loves to snuggle up close and melts the heart of everyone she meets. Rosie is available now at an adoption price of $297.90, including desexing, vaccination, microchip, registrations and worming. You can meet Rosie and any of her other furry friends at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4.15pm. For more information, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/animals or call 6971 4651 during business hours.

Plan to make Wagga inclusive, not exclusive Wagga Wagga, we all have the ability to create an inclusive community. Come along on Monday 5 December and share your views on how Wagga Wagga can improve accessibility and inclusion across the city. Ideas shared at the community session will be used to develop the city’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan. This plan will sit under the city’s new Community Strategic Plan (CSP) – the community’s guiding document for the future of the city – and all actions will be measured against the CSP. “This action plan ensures Wagga Wagga is proactive towards inclusion and accessibility and making it a priority in the city’s planning both now and into the future,” Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes said. “Over the years Council has helped facilitate a number of projects and has some procedures in place for accessibility and inclusion to occur, however, this plan ensures both principles are embedded in all we do across the city. “The community session is open to all residents, and I encourage as many people to come along and share their ideas. This is your chance to help set the foundations for an even better city for generations to come. “Starting the conversation on this and putting plans into action may also spur
