Football fan Suzie Neilsen will enjoy a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity when she tosses the coin before the start of Wagga Wagga’s historic W-League pre-season clash between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets. Suzie, a self-described “footy fan”, was among the first few hundred people to purchase tickets to the 3 November fixture, earning her the chance to win the ultimate game day experience. She admits she was shocked to learn she’d be taking centre-stage alongside some of Australia’s best female football talent at the ground-breaking game. “I’m super excited to be amongst it… it’s an amazing opportunity, something that doesn’t come along every day,” she said. “This is obviously a first for Wagga so I’m pretty keen to be a part of it. Suzie, a proud Queenslander, revealed she’s a staunch Brisbane Roar FC fan, and is yet to decide who’ll she’ll support come game day. Continued page 2
Cost savings for local projects Wagga Wagga City Council has welcomed a successful application to secure funds for a number of projects across the city through the New South Wales Government’s Low Cost Loans Initiative. The initiative is designed to assist growing councils across the State deliver new infrastructure to cater for increased housing supply by refunding 50 percent of the interest paid on loans approved by the
scheme. “This is a very positive program that will improve Wagga Wagga City Council’s ability to develop the infrastructure needed to support growth,” Council’s Director Corporate Services Natalie Te Pohe. “We’re projecting the city’s population will grow to 100,000 by 2038. As a council we need to be able to keep up. “This is another valuable mechanism to help us achieve that goal.” Wagga City Council is one of five councils set to share in $5M in interest subsidies provided through the initiative, with the city’s return estimated at $610,000. Under the Low Cost Loans Initiative, Wagga City Council will borrow $3M for
Infrastructure Projects, $3.9M for Recreation Projects and $2M for Utilities Projects. The interest costs would have totalled $1.2M if Wagga City Council hadn’t secured the Low Cost Loans subsidy. “The additional benefit is that Council can earn interest by retaining its own funds and generate an additional $400,000,” Ms Te Pohe said. “The overall benefit of this initiative is potentially $1M for Council to then allocate to additional projects or programs that benefit the community.” The Infrastructure Projects cover major road works to support growing residential areas, including the Gregadoo Road corridor, while Recreation Projects include some of the city’s most highly awaited

developments such as Riverside and the Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve, along with works in Ladysmith and Tarcutta. “Projects like the Multisport Cycling Complex and Riverside were among the big ones that we were applying to utilise the subsidy and it is positive that we could also utilise this program to support our villages,” Ms Te Pohe said. “Essentially, we’ve now got $8.9M in loans that we can look to take out borrowing for, but these projects total significantly more than this amount. “These Low Cost Loans will only form one funding source for many of these projects including Pomingalarna and Riverside, which will be heavily grant funded.”

CITY'S NEW EVENT SIGNAGE STRUCTURES IN PLACE
Event organisers now have access to more permanent outlets to advertise their events after Wagga Wagga City Council this week erected new infrastructure for temporary signage. Following on from the temporary event signage structures trial undertaken in 2017-18, Council recently approved new guidelines to meet the needs of many different groups, and the broader community, to promote their events. The temporary event signage policy was placed on public exhibition in April/May 2019 and was approved by Council in July 2019. Event organisers can now choose from eight approved
locations to display their temporary event signage. The eight approved locations are: • Jubilee Park, corner Red Hill Road and Bourke Street • Lake Albert, corner Lakeside Drive and Lake Albert Road • Hampden Avenue, North Wagga, near Wilks Park • Kooringal Road, western side, near Copland Street • Lake Albert Road, western side, near Copland Street • Glenfield Road, western side, north of Fernleigh Road • Mitchelmore Street, Turvey Park • Bolton Park, south of Morgan Street New permanent infrastructure to display signs on has this week

From front page “Look, I’m going to flip the coin… so I don’t know who I’m going to go for yet,” she said. “Maybe Sydney, maybe Newcastle, who knows.” Regardless of the outcome, Suzie revealed she’s looking forward to seeing the high-calibre clash unfold in Wagga. She believes the important trial game will serve as strong motivation for aspiring young female footballers. “I mean, Sydney FC won it (the W-League Championship) last year,” she said. “It’s pretty amazing to get that calibre of team to Wagga.” Wagga Wagga City Council Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton agrees, revealing Sydney FC officials are confident of a strong line-up. “We expect to see players of the highest calibre running around here at McDonald’s Park,” Mr Creighton said. “There’s been a fair bit of work go into the ground over the last couple of weeks to ensure it’s in perfect condition for when Sydney FC arrives.” Mr Creighton hopes the clash at Wagga’s premier sporting facility is only the beginning of a fruitful partnership with the code, with a vision to attract either W-League or even A-League premiership fixtures in the future. “We want to continue attracting these elite level events,” he said. “It’s definitely something we would look to have conversations around once we’ve had a few of these trials.” Mr Creighton is hoping to see at least a 2000-strong crowd attend the game, with ticket sales currently sitting around 450. There is an extra incentive for fans to secure their spot before close of business on Monday, with another lucky fan to join Suzie in an important game day role. “They’ll go into the draw to win the chance to carry out the official game ball,” Mr Creighton said. “The lucky winner will join Suzie, and the captains from both teams, in the centre of McDonald’s Park prior to kick-off.”

New amenities block takes shape at home of softball Construction on a new $700,000 amenities building (pictured above) at Wagga’s home of softball is on track for completion in early December, with block work expected to wrap up early next week. When finished, the facility at French Fields will be 200sqm in size and feature a modern kiosk, meeting room, toilets, male and female change rooms, separate umpires’ rooms and four storage areas. “Once the block work is finished, then the structural steel will go up on the roof,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Project Coordinator Adrian Inglis said. “This is a really exciting development. The wider softball community was desperately in need of this new building. “When it’s done, it’s going to make a huge difference to the sport’s ability to grow and operate.” The new amenities building is part of a $1.2M facelift of the French Fields sporting precinct, which also includes a lighting upgrade, car park improvements and an entire

TECHNOLOGY HELPS KEEP WAGGA’S HISTORY ALIVE
A grand plan to digitally preserve the thousands of precious items in Museum of the Riverina’s unique collection of local history took a small but positive step forward this week. Wagga Wagga City Council’s MoR Manager Luke Grealy said a new A3 scanner donated to the museum would greatly assist in the digitisation of many documents, giving more people access to historic pieces. “We have many fragile documents here that should not be handled because there is a risk they will perish further,” Mr Grealy said. “We still want people to have access to these documents and the best way to do that is to scan them and have them available in an electronic format. “The museum has more than 25,000 objects in our possession and about 10,000 of those are documents – each one of them is special in our region’s history. Ultimately we would love to have each item available to the public in digital form – it will be a massive job over many years to achieve this, but that is our long-term vision.” Wagga Wagga and District Historical Society President Geoff Burch presented Mr Grealy with an Avision FB5000 A3 scanner to be used in the continuation of that process. Mr Burch said the Society was pleased to donate the scanner as his group works closely with the Museum towards the end goal of research and education in the public’s interests. “We have always had a great partnership with the Museum and that works to everyone’s advantage,” Mr Burch said. “We want to help people in their research and
Wagga Wagga City Council is currently undertaking works at the Wagga Cricket Ground on Kincaid Street in the lead up to the city’s premier track cycling event. The two-day 2019 Golden Wheel Carnival, encompassing the New South Wales Penny Farthing State Championships, is scheduled to begin on Saturday 9 November. “We’ve been using an area of the complex as a compound while we completed the sewer rising main renewal work along Kincaid Street to the Narrung St. sewer treatment works,” Project Coordinator David Edgar said. “Now those works have finished, we are preparing the site to be reinstated in time for the event next month. “That will involve some top dressing of the soil and reseeding in the area that has been utilised.” The timely remediation works are expected to finish this week, in preparation for the arrival of hundreds of visiting riders, spectators and officials. More than 100 competitors are
expected to contest the Golden Wheel Carnival across nine divisions, including the Elite category, while between 20 to 30 cyclists are tipped to descend on the city to chase state penny farthing glory. “This is our major track carnival for the year,” Wagga Wagga Cycling Club president Jeff Windsor said. “We have a couple events through the season and this (the Golden Wheel Carnival) is the culmination of all of those.” Cyclists are expected to attend from all across the state, with some penny farthing competitors travelling from overseas to stake a claim for line honours. Teenage Canberran star Dev Grewal was crowned last year’s Golden Wheel champion in a thrilling finish to the high-calibre track feature, edging out Wagga rival Calvin Coombes and Bathurst talent Daniel Went. “We’re trying to get the New South Wales State Men’s Sprint Team to come down and contest the carnival,” Mr Windsor said. “It will be high class racing across the two days.”
