Sport kicking goals for local economy
country v City $624,810
Super 15 trial $271,320
sheffield shield $357,000
Eastern University Games $2.8M
Wagga Wagga is the City of Good Sports and a report to Monday night’s July Council meeting showed just how important sport can be to the local economy. So far in 2015, the city has hosted four major sporting events, which has resulted in a more than $4 million boost for the city. The latest ‘Sports Tourism’ economic benefit figures for year ending June 2014 from Tourism Research Australia show the national average spend of a “sports tourist” whose main purpose of travel is either participating in or watching sport is now $234 per person per night. That’s compared to a normal holiday tourist, who will spend on average $180 per person per night. “So far in 2015 Wagga has hosted a Super 15 trial game, NSW v Victoria Sheffield Shield match, Country-City Origin and the Eastern University Games,” Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. “These elite sporting events give supporters and players from Wagga and the wider Riverina the opportunity to witness first-class sport in their own backyard, while also giving our economy a free kick”. Using the Id profile economic predictor, the estimated direct economic benefit from the events were: Super 15 trial game 31 January: $271,320 Sheffield Shield match 15-18 February: $357,000 City-Country Origin 3 May: $624,810 Eastern University Games 5-9 July: $2,825,100 In addition to the benefit from the City-Country Origin match, a media report Commissioned by Country Rugby League showed the media exposure of the game had an estimated audience of 25,369,507. The estimated cost of purchasing that level of advertising is $3,275,161.

Dozens of children’s artworks are now on display as part of Ngulagambilanha: to be returning home, which brought together schools in Wiradjuri Country to connect with Indigenous culture. For the past six months, students have taken part in workshops at their schools and at the gallery. Along the way they have been able to engage with The Art Gallery of NSW and Wagga gallery’s collections, as well as with local Wiradjuri artists, artworks and language. Children and teachers from primary schools in Ashmont, Corowa, Henty, Gundagai, Gundagai South, Tumut and Temora were on hand for the 25

I have a very important question to all the women in the Wagga Wagga area, have you ever thought about being a Councillor?
Well, now is the time. We have many great women in our area and I am now going to urge each and every woman to think hard about being a Councillor — we need you. At present I am the only woman on Council, we need at least three or four. Wagga Wagga is the largest inland city in NSW and at the moment most councils have

help name zoo’s new donkey
Wagga’s Mayor and Star FM’s breakfast duo Pip and Whitto have joined the campaign to name the Botanic Garden Zoo’s new donkey. The zoo’s matchmakers searched across the country before the yet-to-be-named colt was found as a partner for bachelorette Jenny. Jenny had been looking for love since August last year and while she’s found her man, she doesn’t even know his name. If you’ve got a great suggestion – maybe it’s in honour of a famous donkey or something about Wagga – then send it to councilnews@wagga.nsw. gov.au by 7 August. Suggestions have been flying in to Council News since Jenny and her beau asked for the community’s help. A special selection panel has been put together to help decide on the best suggestion, with Mayor Rod Kendall and Pip and Whitto on hand to make sure this love story has a happy ending.

Main City Levee to be upgraded
At its July meeting, Council resolved to proceed with the construction of the Main City Levee to provide a 1 in 100 year level of protection. An allowance will be
made for the possibility that the North Wagga levees may also be constructed to provide a 1 in 100 year level of protection. An investigation into providing 1 in 100 year
level of protection for North Wagga will be incorporated in the upcoming review of the Wagga Wagga Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan.

“This project will enhance the natural environment along the Murrumbidgee River as well as provide a community resource for education and engagement in local Wiradjuri culture.” Wagga Wagga City Council, with funding partners Riverina Local Land Services and the NSW Environmental Trust, is redeveloping the disused ponds of the Narrung Street Sewerage Treatment Plant into wetland area recreating the area as a new community asset. Progress at the site has been gaining momentum since bulky earthworks got under way in April. The three pond areas and a deep water channel have been constructed, which will allow aquatic animals refuge from warmer surface temperatures during the hot summer months. The large red gum logs that existed on site have been retained
on site to help construct habitat for aquatic and terrestrial animals. The earthworks are expected to be completed soon, which will be followed by the planting of wetland vegetation, formation of walking tracks and installation of bird hides and an education shelter. About 18,000 seedlings will be planted, including knob sedge, tall sedge rush, swamp lily, common nardoo, frogsmouth, marsh clubrush, tail spike-rush and river clubrush. Council was successful in its application as a Green Army Project Sponsor through the Federal Government’s Green Army initiative, which is a handson, practical environmental action program that supports local environment and heritage conservation projects. The Marrambidya Wetland is likely to be launched in spring following the completion of the ground works.
Meet Boris
This week’s pet of the week is Boris, a male wolfhound cross mixed breed who’s about four years old. This big fellow will make a great companion for someone that can handle a strong dog. He is gentle for his size and would make a great addition to a family with a medium to large back yard with solid high fences. However, Boris will need an active family so he can get his exercise every day. Boris can be adopted $299.40, which includes vaccinations, desexing, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check. You can meet Boris and his buddies at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday between 1pm to 4.15pm. For further information, contact the friendly Animal Management Rangers on 6971 4651 or visit www.wagga.nsw.gov.au.

The Narrung Street Wetland project has been named in recognition of the local Wiradjuri people and their relationship with the Murrumbidgee River. The wetland will now be known as the “Marrambidya” Wetland – the Wiradjuri word for Murrumbidgee. The name was officially endorsed at Wagga Wagga City Council’s July Ordinary Meeting. Council staff consulted with project stakeholders and the Indigenous community for their input into the name, which is appropriate for the location and meaningful for the Wiradjuri people. “Naming this project the Marrambidya Wetland is a permanent Welcome to Country for all visitors to the area and recognises the traditional owners of this land, the Wiradjuri people,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said.
