GREEN MACHINE: Raiders players Brad Abbey and Aiden Sezer join Mayor Greg Conkey to announce tickets are now on sale for the NRL game at McDonald's Park.
Thousands to flock to NRL clash
Raiders get taste of Wagga Wagga as tickets go on sale for 4 May game Tickets are on sale now for a green and gold weekend of sport in Wagga Wagga. The Raiders will take on the Panthers at McDonald’s Park on Saturday 4 May next year, with the NRL clash coming off the back of the Gold Cup Carnival. Canberra Raiders players Aidan Sezer and Brad Abbey joined Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM to officially open the ticket sales for the game.
There are only 10,000 tickets available and footy fans can secure theirs online at raidersshop.com.au or at the Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street and the Oasis Aquatic Centre on Morgan Street. Pre-purchase tickets begin at $20 for juniors (ages 5-16), while family tickets (two adults and two children) are just $80. Cr Conkey said Wagga Wagga City Council is proud to bring the Raiders and Panthers to McDonald’s Park in 2019. “This marks the start of an exciting partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and the Canberra Raiders, who are
as much a part of the Riverina as they are the ACT,” he said. “It will be a huge green and gold weekend in the city, with the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival in the days before the RaidersPanthers clash. “This festival of sport will no doubt attract horse racing and NRL fans from around the state, so secure your tickets as soon as possible or you may miss out.” Raiders halfback Aidan Sezer said the team was looking forward to travelling to Wagga Wagga next season and the opportunity to play in the regional fixture was great for the
game in the Wagga Wagga region. “I can’t wait to come out here next year to play in front of what will hopefully be a big Raiders crowd,” he said. “It’s great that we are able to take one of our games to a country area and we know there are plenty of Raiders fans in the Wagga Wagga area so it’s a chance for us to give back to this region.” If you have friends or family visiting from out of town for the NRL game and Gold Cup Carnival, travel packages are available. Sustainable growth towards a city of 100,000 Council has this week released its 2017/18 Annual Report, which highlights the strategies and new infrastructure completed during the financial year for the city to keep growing sustainably toward a six-figure population. “Wagga Wagga is in the midst of an exciting period that will define both the growth and vision of our city and surrounding villages for years to come,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “As highlighted in the Annual Report,
Council is developing and implementing the strategies and infrastructure needed to meet these ambitious, but achievable, goals. “We are also working through the milestones set out in the Community Strategic Plan 2040 – Wagga View to ensure we are servicing the needs of our community across the broad range of services Council provides.” In the 2017/18 financial year, Council adopted key documents such as the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy 2040; the Recreation, Open Space and
Community Strategy 2040 (ROSC); the revised Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan; revised Crime Prevention Plan and a new Graffiti Management Plan. These documents play a crucial role in ensuring the right infrastructure will be in place for the growing Wagga Wagga region over the coming decades. A number of important projects that will provide vital facilities and create economic opportunities were either finalised or started in 2017/18, including the Stage 1 Main City Levee upgrade and the Bomen
Enabling Roads project. Council was also recognised with nine awards, including for the development of the Wagga View CSP, Council’s sewer management and Museum of the Riverina exhibitions. “Council and the community have achieved a lot over 2017/18,” Cr Conkey said. “I would like to thank my fellow Councillors and Council staff for their leadership, hard work and service, and the community for their support." NEW SEWER PUMP TAKES SHAPE
This week a 300-tonne crane was used to manoeuvre the seven enormous pieces of a new sewer pump station into a 10.6m excavation on the corner of Forsyth and Dockers streets. The entire pump weighs 72t, with the largest biggest piece weighing in at a massive 23t. Sewer Pump Station 2 is a critical piece of infrastructure which transfers the liquid waste from 8600 households and businesses to Narrung St sewage treatment works. It’s scheduled to be commissioned by the end of the year and will replace the existing pump which was built in 1927. Wagga Wagga City Council currently maintains 43 sewer pump stations across the local government area.
EXTRA WORK NIGHT ON LAKE ALBERT ROAD The Lake Albert Road upgrade project passed the halfway mark during works on Thursday night and early Friday morning. The project is now 58 per cent complete. An extra shift has been added to this week’s schedule to cover this week’s Tuesday night shift lost due to rainfall. Motorists are advised roadworks will take place Saturday night from 7pm with southbound lanes closed during this time.

There’s potentially a major problem lurking in the city’s sewer system and Wagga Wagga City Council needs the community’s help. Council recently had a blocked sewer pump twice in as many weeks at Flowerdale. The main items causing the problem were baby wipes getting into the sewer system. Council’s Director Commercial Caroline Angel said it was important the community was aware that wet wipes and various other products should never be flushed down the toilet. “Council wants to reinforce the message to the community that wipes should not go down toilets and drains,” Ms Angel said. “Blockages caused by bathroom products have been a big issue across Australia for several years. Now in recent weeks Council has had to clear two blockages at pumps in Flowerdale. “These incidents have the potential to cost the community thousands of dollars every year to deal with the blockages these products can cause in the sewer system.”

When the recent freeze on federal government grants to local government and the rate pegging imposed by the state government is considered, local government continues to suffer considerable hardship. In the 1990s, local government received 1 per cent of Commonwealth Government revenue.
