The City of Good Sports will host an NRL premiership game in 2019 and 2020 following a partnership with the Canberra Raiders. At the Monday 27 August Council Meeting, it was resolved to enter into a two-year agreement with the Raiders and the NRL, with the option for a third year. “This is an exciting announcement for Wagga Wagga and rugby league supporters right across the Riverina,” Cr Conkey said. “We are delighted to be partnering with the Raiders. They are the local team for rugby league supporters in Wagga Wagga and the Riverina and provide development pathways for our talented young players. “As well as boosting rugby league at a grass roots level, each game is estimated to inject $2M into the local economy and will add to the 1.3 million people who visit Wagga Wagga each year.” Wagga Wagga has hosted many high level sporting matches in recent years, including the sellout Country v City Origin match in 2015, which attracted 9127 fans at McDonald’s Park. Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the club was looking forward to rewarding their many GAME ON: Mayor Greg Conkey with Canberra Raiders Captain Jarrod Croker and CEO Don Furner at McDonald's Park. Funding flows for freight hub A critical piece of infrastructure funding has secured the next stage of the city’s industrial transport precinct just days after Wagga Wagga City Council announced a key partner for the project.
a private partner in the development of the hub’s freight terminal. The latest funding boost will allow for construction of a 5.8 kilometre rail siding to service the main freight terminal and provide connection to the Main Southern Railway Line. Two significant announcements in quick succession have accelerated the RiFL project, which has the ability to transform the local economy, according to Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM. “The Bomen Enterprise Area will be the The NSW Government this week economic driver for this city for centuries. committed $14.4 million to the Riverina This is a great outcome,” Cr Conkey said. Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub (RiFL) Council General Manager Peter Thompson at Bomen. described the RiFL Hub as a significant and The multi-million dollar injection came only tangible development to add to the existing a week after Council named Visy Logistics as confidence of industry and business to
invest in Wagga. “Many industries will benefit from having rail freight as opposed to road freight directly at their back door,” Mr Thompson said. “A project of this size and significance in Wagga is going to better service the industries we already have on site, in addition to being a major attraction to new businesses. “The flow-on effects the city will see, from bringing more business to Bomen, will be enormous. We are extremely confident this project will put Wagga at the forefront of economic development in regional NSW.” Securing an additional $21 million in funding to develop and service industrial land adjacent to RiFL is Council’s next priority. “We need to be able to develop that land
and get all the infrastructure in place so business and industry can get an immediate start,” Mr Thompson said. “The $35 million Bomen Enabling Roads project completed last year has provided the road network for the area – now we need to get the land developed in line with the next stages of the freight terminal and railway siding. “The years of hard work are starting to pay off. In the past week we have announced significant progress on the project and it’s all good news for Wagga and the wider region.” A strategic master plan for the 1800-hectare Bomen Business Park site was completed in 2009 and featured the proposed RiFL Hub and the roadworks required to make the project possible. wagga.nsw.gov.au/rifl
INSIDE: LIVVI'S PLACE OPENING, BOMEN ROADS PROJECT WINS AWARD
Council award for Bomen Roads project The multi-million dollar Bomen Enabling Roads project has received industry recognition as an outstanding achievement in program and project management. Wagga Wagga City Council was awarded a High Commendation for Construction/Engineering in the Australian Institute of Project Management’s 2018 achievement awards. The $35.3M project was recognised by the peak industry body in August and ranked among some of the largest construction works in the state for excellence in project management. Council Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said achieving this level of recognition on a large-scale project was a significant result
for Council. “To be recognised by the Australian Institute of Project Management against our peers in the industry, including Tier 1 construction and engineering companies, demonstrates that Wagga Wagga City Council can deliver major projects on time and on budget,” Ms Angel said. “It’s a big achievement which recognises our team effort.” The Bomen Enabling Roads project started in 2016 with site preparation earthworks. The project was officially opened a year later in November 2017. During that 12 months, 365 staff dedicated a total of 110,000 hours to the project, more than half-a-million tonnes of dirt was moved to make way for the new roads with a total of 65,000 tonnes of gravel laid for the road surfaces.

Ms Angel said during the 110,000 hours of work there was no time lost to injury, adding this was another significant example of how well the project was managed. The project has included the construction of 7.1km of new roadways.

Life on the land can be a tough gig, but it’s one that local musicians and performers will embrace in Wagga later this month to assist struggling farmers in the grip of the state’s “big dry”. A free community concert and picnic in the park is the initiative of Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM who approached local entertainers to support the concept and they jumped at the chance. Cr Conkey said a solid line-up of local performers have been booked for Wagga’s “A Tough Gig” musical event to be held at the Victory Memorial Gardens on Sunday 23 September, starting at 1pm. “It’s a tough gig for those suffering during the tough times,” Cr Conkey said. “The idea is for city folk to embrace our country cousins and say ‘I know you’re doing it tough, let’s get together’. “Hopefully we get a

NSW Farmers local branch chairman Alan Brown endorsed the musical event as an opportunity to provide some social relief for farmers. “It can be extremely frustrating for farmers,” Mr Brown said.

WAR ZONES ON DISPLAY
Everyone can play together at Livvi's Place Everyone can play in Wagga Wagga following the opening of the city’s first inclusive playspace at Bolton Park. Livvi’s Place Wagga Wagga was unveiled on Tuesday, with a crowd of kids putting the new playground through its paces. The enclosed playspace also features swings, slide, roundabout, barbecue facilities, accessible toilets, sensory play equipment, a soon-to-beinstalled in-ground trampoline and a colourful mural. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the new playspace was another step forward in making the city more accessible and inclusive. “We are proud to say that Wagga Wagga is now home to an all-abilities playspace in what has been a truly collaborative project,” Cr Conkey said. “Livvi’s Place means so much to the families who can now take their children to a fun, safe and inclusive space and play together.” Local mum Leila Bright, whose daughter Mia has a rare congenital limb difference, put Council in contact with the Touched By Olivia Foundation to make the playspace possible. The foundation was created by John and Justine Perkins following the loss of their eightmonth-old daughter Olivia to a rare disease in 2006. Since then, a number of Livvi’s Place inclusive playgrounds have been created around the country. “I realised Mia couldn’t access any of our playgrounds safely or easily and started to think if Mia can’t do that, what about everyone else
that has different needs to Mia,” Leila said. “It became our mission that everyone in our community, regardless of age or ability could access and participate in play. “From those initial meetings with Council and Touched By Olivia to where we are standing now, it has been fantastic to be a part of this.” Livvi’s Place Wagga Wagga was funded by the NSW Government ($400,000), Wagga Wagga City Council ($100,000) and a donation by local business Teys Australia ($50,000). It was the first new playground completed under the state government’s Everyone Can Play in NSW package to make playgrounds more inclusive. A witness to conflict zones and atrocities in places like Rwanda, Iraq, Nicaragua and Afghanistan, artist George Gittoes creates striking images of people pushed to the limits of their humanity. In a new exhibition the Museum of the Riverina presents the work of the renowned artist and his depiction of the impact of conflict on soldiers and civilians alike. The Realism of War: Works of Humanity by George Gittoes reveals the experiences of Australian soldiers within modern theatres of global conflict. “George Gittoes highlights the considerable contribution to national defence made by members of the armed forces, and the public’s evolving attitude towards conflict over the past century," Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy said. “The exhibition will include a selection of the artist’s paintings and drawings, photographs, service records and films.” Mr Gittoes will attend the exhibition launch on 6 Setember, along with acclaimed journalist Chris Masters. Book your spot at museumriverina.com.au. The exhibition will be on display at the Historic Council Chambers site until 18 November.
