Head to the Botanic Gardens Zoo this school holidays and you’ll hear the pitter-patter of little hooves. The beloved Gump family of donkeys has welcomed its latest addition – another bouncing baby boy. As is now tradition, the community is being called on to send in their name suggestions for the new foal. “This is Jenny and Forrest’s third foal, with his older brothers called Forrest Jr and Bubba,” Zoo Curator Kira McBeath said. “Whether you stick with the Forrest Gump theme or want to think outside the box of chocolates, send in your name ideas and help us name the new donkey. “The zoo is always a great place to visit and the new foal is great timing with school holidays. “He’s settling in well and is always close by his mum’s side.” Jenny’s quest for love captured the hearts of the Wagga Wagga community in 2014 and it took nearly a year to find her Mr Right. The community took inspiration from the on-screen couple in the movie Forrest Gump and named Jenny’s beau Forrest when he made the move to the city from Tamworth in 2015. The Gumps recently had their home renovated, with the new donkey enclosure featuring more space to run around, new grass, shelters and more. If you’ve got a great idea for the new foal’s name, let us know via email at councilnews@wagga.nsw.gov.au or submit your suggestion on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages. The Botanic Gardens Zoo is home to a diverse mix of native and other animals, many of which are free to explore. The zoo and aviary are currently open from 9am to 4pm each day. The zoo is closed on Good Friday.

HAVE A BALL IN A HALL: Ping Pong WoW is bringing thousands of balls to Ladysmith and Uranquinty as part of Fresh 2019.

FUN FOR ALL AGES IN FINAL WEEK OF FRESH

Don’t miss the chance to experience something new in the final week of the Fresh festival. Fresh creatively combines Seniors Week and Youth Week celebrations into a month-long program of talks, workshops and events. The fun, diverse and engaging program has offered the community countless opportunities to explore and

experience food, art, culture, sport and more. The final week will be headlined by Ping Pong WoW when more than 2000 ping pong balls are set free at the Uranquinty Community Hall and Ladysmith Memorial Hall. Held on April 27 and 28 respectively, Ping Pong WoW will finish the school holidays on a high. Presented by The Ball

Room, its team of artists turn playtime into performance in this interactive event. Also taking place in the last week is the annual Stone the Crows Festival, the popular River and Wren Market, an olive pickling workshop and a French for travellers class. PLAN SETS OUT KEY INFRASTRUCTURE AS CITY GROWS

Wagga Wagga City Council has adopted its plan to provide community infrastructure as the city grows. The Wagga Wagga Local Infrastructure Contributions Plan 2019-34 lays out how contributions from land developers will be used over the next 15 years. The $164M plan includes infrastructure and works such as road corridor and bridge works, footpaths, cycleways, streetscapes, new and upgraded sports fields, parks and athletics facilities - all of which are critical in

supporting a growing community. “Wagga’s population is forecast to grow significantly, with the NSW Government setting a target of 100,000 before 2040,” Director Corporate Services Natalie Te Pohe said. “As the city grows, Council collects contributions from developers, which are set aside for works in that area or across the city. “New residential development means an increased population and the need to provide

more services such as roads, parks and open spaces, community facilities and more. “This plan sets out those key infrastructure projects and which aspects are funded through contributions of land, works and money from the developers of land throughout Wagga Wagga. “On behalf of Council, I would like to thank the people who made a submission while the draft plan was on public exhibition, particularly the development industry.” Some of the more

significant projects to be partially funded through developer contributions include the Glenfield Road corridor upgrade including duplicating parts of the road; the Pomingalarna Multi-Sport Cycling Complex; the Riverside project; upgrades to Farrer Road, Red Hill Road, Bakers Lane and Gregadoo Road; and works at Jubilee, Rawlings and Bolton parks. The $164M plan is effective from 1 July 2019, with 87 per cent of the projects forecast to be achieved within the next eight years.

Be a part of new Crime Prevention Working Group

Help build community safety by adding your voice to Wagga Wagga City Council’s newly established Crime Prevention Working Group. Council is currently calling for expressions of interest for four community positions on the group, one of which must be aged 25 years and under. “The Crime Prevention Working Group

will be an opportunity to proactively discuss various issues and initiatives that relate to safety and the prevention of crime across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “It’s hoped that over time the group will have a positive effect on community and business confidence.

“It’s also a way to strengthen the link between Council, the community, the NSW Government and other organisations with a focus on fostering a safe environment for our growing city.” Along with the community representatives, the working group will include representatives from Council, the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, Department of Housing and Family and

SPOTLIGHT WALK SHINES A LIGHT ON NATIVE WILDLIFE IN WILKS PARK More than 60 people went on a torch-lit adventure to discover local wildlife on Friday 12 April. There were plenty of squawks and scurrying of native birds and animals at Wilks Park After Dark across the hour-and-a-half spotlighting walk. “Wilks Park After Dark highlights the many native nocturnal animals and birds that live in Wagga Wagga, many of which are threatened species,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Sam Parsell said. “Our after dark adventurers also learn about the rehabilitation works that have been undertaken to enhance the area for our locally threatened squirrel glider population. “On the night were lucky to see a squirrel glider, along with two brush-tail possums and a family of sleepy kookaburras.”

TOP MARKS FOR COUNCIL DESIGN ENGINEER There has been some outstanding recognition for one of Council’s design engineers. Trevor Oliver (pictured) graduated with distinction from the University of Southern Queensland on 5 April and received one of the university’s most important academic awards - the Faculty Medal. The university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie sent Trevor her personal congratulations on his academic achievement and success. “First I received an email to tell me I will be graduating with distinction, then I got the email

to tell me I am receiving the Faculty Medal for academic achievement,” Trevor said. “Not bad for a farm boy who left school at year 10, 40 years ago!” Trevor has worked at Council for almost 10 years. A fitter and turner by trade, Trevor

completed a diploma in civil engineering before pursuing a degree by distance in Engineering Science. Trevor also recognised the support he had received from his Commercial Operations colleagues who he said encouraged him in his university journey.
