We’re all ears: get loud at OUTLOUD WAGGA youth forum Council is calling all 17 to 25 year-olds to ‘get loud’ at the upcoming youth forum, which gives young people the opportunity to communicate their visions for the city, and talk about their experience of living in Wagga Wagga.

Ms Osgood said Council wants to find out about important issues for local young people to inform Council decisions, and help guide the development of new events, programs and opportunities in the community. “We really want to be guided by the voices of young people in an accessible, inclusive and safe space,” Ms Osgood said. “Everyone is welcome, so please register your interest”. Family day out: our city's free kids festival returns From front page Destination and Events Coordinator Sophie Gairn said it will be an exciting day, full of wild and wonderful outdoor adventure, music, entertainment, play and imagination in store for festivalgoers. “After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are excited to welcome familiar faces from the Australian festival music scene, such as Bunny Racket and School of Rock, back to Wagga Wagga for the festival,” Ms Gairn said. “Get ready to get muddy with Scrapboy from Dirtgirlworld at the Great Spring Jam Mud Pie Bake off, use your imagination repurposing ‘junk’ into floral masterpieces at the Junk Flower workshops, celebrate dancing in the moment with the whole family at the Live Long & Sparkle

dance party, enjoy rock climbing, an obstacle course, and so much more. “We have also included a chill-out zone where you can take a break, relax and unwind for some leisurely family time.” Entry is free, and the events team are encouraging families to pack a picnic or purchase a treat at one of the food stalls and enjoy a day of fun and sunshine in the surrounds of our beautiful Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens. If you are a parent, grandparent or carer, mark Saturday 24 September in your calendar for what will be one of the biggest children’s events in the region. Expressions of interest (EOI) for food vendors to serve up fun, fresh, healthy food or snacks at the festival are now open.

“Our EOI for food vendors closes on Sunday 28 August, so if you have a creative, fresh food offering to feed everyone at Spring Jam, we want to hear from you,” Ms Gairn said. Applications for food vendors can be made online by heading to visitwagga.com/springjam Stop by the Spring Jam website for full program and festival details and follow Visit Wagga Wagga on Facebook or Instagram for more. The event is supported through funding from the Destination NSW Regional Flagship Events Program.

GET READY TO JAM: Put Saturday 24 September in your diary as the day to head to our Botanic Gardens for Spring Jam 2022.

FIRST FLOOD: The Riverside playground was designed to withstand floods and passed its first CLEAN UP: Team Leader Parks Operations (Open Space) Craig De Piazza cleared the test effortlessly. foothpaths surrounding Riverside of slippery river silt after the floodwaters receded.

Riverside emerges unscathed from floodwaters Wagga Wagga’s destination playground, Riverside, has emerged unscathed from last week’s floodwaters, with Council reopening the precinct on Thursday. Specifically designed to withstand flooding, the playground had only mud and some missing mulch to show for last week’s high water levels. Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said the playground had performed as expected after its first flood. “We positioned Riverside beside the river in order to create an ideal gathering place and destination for residents and visitors, capitalising on our city’s greatest assets: the river and the city centre,” Mr Creighton said. “We knew the design was sound and we’re very pleased with the result – a

clean-up and some mulch replaced was the extent of work needed.” A Council crew has spent the last few days clearing mud and debris from the area, cleaning play equipment, and putting a fresh load of mulch around the plantings, which all survived. Works and Playground Officer John Conlan said his team had been working as quickly as possible, aware of the many kids eager to get back to playing. “There was quite a bit of mud and silt covering the ground and pathways, so we’ve been clearing that away before focusing on cleaning and disinfecting all the equipment,” Mr Conlan said. “We wanted to ensure everything was safe and clean before we let the kids back, so we’ve really appreciated the community’s

patience while we’ve been working.” While the Riverside playground is open, Council will continue to undertake minor clean-up works in the precinct, including the Wagga beach carpark, which remains closed. The barbeques will be reinstated at a later date. “We’re working at getting the carpark cleaned up, so over the next few days we’re asking everyone to park at the CSU Riverina Playhouse and walk along the levee footpath to the playground,” Mr Creighton said. “The ground is still very sodden, so please stay on the paths and give the ground and the grass time to dry out and recover. “We’re looking forward to seeing the MUDDY JOB: Works and Playground playground full of happy families again.” Officer John Conlan clearing mud from the playground.

Anything that grows in the garden goes in the green lid bin. Broken garden tools, hoses and ornaments should be placed in the red lid bin.

Multisport Cycling Complex gets the thumbs up from topcalibre riders Wagga Wagga’s new $12 million Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve has passed its first national cycling event test with flying colours. More than 230 competitors and officials plus their teams and supporters from across NSW, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania converged on the facility last weekend (13–14 August) for the 2022 AusCycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships. MTB Wagga President David Reid said the feedback about the complex was positive, from the quality of various tracks to the versatility of the community building and its facilities. “This was the venue’s first big test, and what a way to test it out with the Marathon National Championships, which had all the best riders in Australia turn up here and ride,” Mr Reid said. “All the competitors loved the idea that the 27-kilometre course used all of the facility, apart from the pump track, and finished in the velodrome. “On the first lap of three for the Marathon Championships, seeing the top 15 to 20 riders laughing like little kids as they rode through the BMX track was fantastic. They had a great time and the finish was down to a two-man sprint

around the velodrome, which was just absolutely unbelievable.” The complex will again be busy this weekend, hosting the Wagga Wagga Trail Marathon on Saturday 20 August, followed with the Canberra BMX Club’s Come and Try Day on Sunday 21 August at the BMX track. On 29–30 October, around 130 competitors and officials are expected to make the trip to Pomingalarna for the 2022 Mountain Bike National Gold Level Cross Country Olympic (XCO) event. Council’s Destination & Events Coordinator Sophie Gairn said the Marathon Championships, along with the XCO event, will provide significant benefits to the local economy through visitor spending. “During the Marathon Championships, a lot of the competitors and their support teams stayed in Wagga Wagga the night before the competition, supporting local accommodation, food and hospitality venues,” Ms Gain said. The BMX Come and Try session runs from 10am–12pm this Sunday 21 August and is open to riders of all ages. Business Support Officer (People and Culture) PERFECT FOR YOUR BACKYARD: Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid and Wagga Nursery Propagation Manager Shane Astridge with some of the seedlings Council will be giving away next week at the Ashmont Shopping Centre.

Free natives for your backyard

Do you have room in your garden for some native plants? Wagga Wagga City Council’s Environment team is handing out seedlings next week as part of the One Tree for Me initiative. One Tree for Me is part of Council’s biodiversity strategy, and aims to achieve 65,000 native seedlings planted throughout the suburbs over a six year period. Next week’s seedling giveaway is on Thursday 25 August from 2pm to 6pm at the Ashmont Shopping Centre. Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid said the Environment Team have already distributed more than 8800 native seedlings so far this year. “We’ve carefully selected plants that are indigenous to the local area, so not only are they suited to thrive in the Wagga climate, but they’re also perfect for attracting birds and insects, including bees, that are also indigenous to the area,” Ms Reid said.

“We’re really encouraging everyone to come down and grab their seedlings; they’ll only take a few minutes to plant, and you’ll have years of joy watching the different birds and insects visit your garden.” Council’s seedling giveaways have been very popular, with a mix of varieties on offer. The seedlings are sourced and grown in local nurseries. “We’re handing the seedlings out now because these are the ideal months for planting natives; basically, from now until the middle of spring,” Ms Reid said. “This time we have one tree and a selection of shrubs and ground covers that are ideal for gardens. We’re taking the hard work out of deciding what the correct natives are for your backyard in this region.” For more information, contact Environmental Education Officer Christina Reid on 1300 292 442 or visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/onetreeforme

Doubles, singles, serious or social; if you are keen for a game of tennis, then book in for a hit at Wagga Wagga City Council’s community tennis centre at Forest Hill. Council has been clearing and cleaning up the complex in Brunskill Avenue since acquiring it from the Forest Hill Tennis Club. Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said Council became involved when the club was no longer in a financial position to keep the complex open. “They approached Council to see whether we would be interested in taking over the ownership and operation of the centre to ensure it could remain open for the community,” Mr Cook said. “Once we acquired the courts, the first order of business was to demolish the
