SHINING A LIGHT ON DUKE OF KENT OVAL Sport and training sessions at Duke of Kent Oval will soon be played under lights. Two 30-metre tall galvanised light poles, complete with seven LED floodlights each, were installed at the oval this week. One light tower has gone in on the North Parade side of the oval, the other on South Parade. The lighting upgrade was highlighted in the City of Wagga Wagga’s Soccer Development Strategy to improve the overall useability of the oval. “Duke of Kent Oval is used year-round for soccer and cricket. The addition of lights gives sports clubs the option of using the oval in the evenings for training and night matches,” Manager Environment and Recreation Mark Gardiner said. “The Soccer Strategy identified two lighting improvement projects in Wagga, one at Rawlings Park, completed in April 2015, which consisted of lighting fields 1, 5 and 6, and, the Duke of Kent upgrade, which is now being carried out.” Wagga has 42 playing fields with full or partial lighting in the city. The new LED light fittings are low maintenance, energy-efficient and designed to be non-obtrusive to neighbouring homes. Residents were consulted during this project. The lights are in addition to the recently completed $465,000 amenities block at the oval. The new amenities replace an ageing facility that no longer met the requirements of user groups and was built in partnership with Wagga and District Cricket Association and the City of Wagga Wagga. LIGHT IT UP: Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Phill Blake was on hand at Duke of Kent Oval during the week as the second of two new 30-metre energy-efficient lights was craned into place.
Community thrives with grants Sixty-six community groups, individuals and organisations have shared in thousands of dollars in funding as part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s 2016/17 Annual Grants Program. The grants program provides an annual funding opportunity for the Wagga Wagga Local Government area and aims to support local community-based groups, with a total of $175,000 on offer across six categories. “Council’s Annual Grants Program displays our commitment to the liveability of our community by supporting
a broad range of heritage, recreation, cultural, social and environmental projects,” Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. “This year’s projects reflect just how diverse our community is, such as $3000 for the Wagga Autism Support Group to hold a Sensory Santa Photo Shoot and $3000 to restore the Anglican Parish of Wagga Wagga’s WWI memorial board.” “Council has also committed $20,000 to 14 different events, including the Riverina Truck
Show and Kids Convoy, and Cork and Fork Festival.” A formal presentation evening for the successful applicants was held at the Civic Theatre on Thursday. The Annual Grants Program consists of six grant categories: Community Health and Wellbeing, Connected Rural and Urban Communities, Arts and Culture, Local Heritage, Events, and Sustainable Environments. Applications were assessed by category specific panels comprising of a Councillor, Council staff and independent

Big fun for little scientists at week-long festival Riverina Science Festival has been in full swing. Hundreds of people jumped at the chance to learn a little bit more about the wonders of science. Budding scientists, or those with a curious mind, took part in star gazing, kitchen science experiments, learnt the science of sound and made their own musical instrument, found out interesting facts about weeds and
how to tackle them or joined in the science fun thanks to Scientwists entertainment duo Fizzle and Pop. Today is the last day of the festival, which has been held over the past three years and coincides with National Science Week. The festival was made possible through funding from the Australian Government’s Science for Australia’s Future, Inspiring Australia Programme.

Rectification works at a hangar at Wagga Wagga Airport are nearing completion. The City of Wagga Wagga expects the works at the hangar to be complete in the next four weeks. The works are to enable a building certificate to be issued for the hangar and was a condition of sale made between Council and Regional Express (Rex) in January.
“Council has been working closely with the Rex group through this process,” General Manager of the City of Wagga Wagga Alan Eldridge said. “There have been some time delays; however the works will be within the $500,000 budget. “We are now three to four weeks away from completion. Once work is finished we will conduct a handover to Rex who will then own the hangar.”

T W E N T Y-T H R E E G R O U P S G E T A B O O S T Representatives from the RSL/Commercial Club and Rules Club Wagga presented more than $126,892 in funding to 23 community groups on Thursday, as part of the 2016 ClubGRANTS scheme. The City of Wagga Wagga coordinates the local ClubGRANTS committee made up of a representative from each of the participating clubs, Family and Community Services and a non-government representative. The ClubGRANTS scheme is a state-wide initiative that provides the framework for registered clubs to directly
fund local priority projects and services. “The funding provided by this scheme assists groups that may not have been able to secure financial assistance through other means, and helps to ensure valued services and projects continue to be delivered,” Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said. Clubs that earn more than a million dollars annually in gaming machine revenue provide funding for community projects and services, and in turn receive dollar-for-dollar gaming tax deductions.
WITH THANKS: Wagga War Widows’ Guild members Laura Evans and Robin Millington. The Guild will use the grant to conduct social outings for its members.
