RESEAL PROGRAM UNDERWAY ACROSS WAGGA SUBURBS

The city’s annual roads maintenance program fired up this week with more than 270,000sqm of sealed road set to receive a new surface. This year’s $1.5M roads reseal program will focus on roads across 12 suburbs and some rural areas over the next three months. Local contractor Boral will undertake the works on behalf of Council. Residents and businesses will be notified via letterbox drop of dates and changed traffic conditions prior to works starting in their street. The reseal program is rolled out each year during the warmer months and is a preventative road maintenance technique. “Resealing involves applying a new coat of bitumen and stone aggregate over the existing surface which helps keep moisture out of the road base and increases friction for car tyres,” Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark said. “Without preventative maintenance like resealing, the life of the road is greatly reduced and it’s more likely to produce potholes and other defects.” In preparation for the reseal Council crews carried out maintenance works on some roads in the 2017/18 reseal schedule. These works ensure the road is in the best condition for the new surface. Motorists are advised that changed traffic conditions will be experienced during the program. “We ask motorists to take care while the works are taking place and there may be some minor traffic delays due to the partial lane closures,” Mr Shoemark said. “There will also be some loose stones following the works as the aggregate needs two to three weeks to lock into place after a reseal. “A street sweeper will return to the reseal sites after this period to remove any remaining loose stone.” For full details on changes to traffic conditions during the reseal program and to keep up to date on the schedule, visit www.wagga.nsw.gov. au/roads.

FRESH COAT: Boral contractor Robert Naumoski and Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark on site in Lake Albert this week. Council’s reseal program has started and will focus on roads across 12 suburbs and some rural areas over the next three months.

Time to recognise local legends Nominees for the 2018 Wagga Wagga Australia Day Awards have been announced ahead of the ceremony to be held on Thursday 25 January. There are eight nominees for Citizen of the Year, one nominee for Young Citizen of the Year and two for the Ted Ryder Memorial Award. Two athletes will be inducted into the Wagga Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame and one person will be inducted into the hall’s Local Legends category. “It’s great to see so many outstanding members of our community recognised through the award nomination process,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “The Australia Day Awards are a fantastic way to honour the hard work and dedication the people of our community do to make the city a better place. “The award nominees represent some of Wagga Wagga’s many unsung heroes,

from tireless community advocates to long-serving volunteers, and I would like to congratulate them on behalf of our city.” Unfortunately there were no nominations for the prestigious Walk of Honour that met the criteria. The Beyond Bank Australia Day Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 25 January from 7pm in the Victory Memorial Gardens. Along with the awards, there will be a concert by the Australian Army Band Kapooka and the national anthem competition finalists.

All community members are invited to attend the awards, which will have food and drink available for purchase and a pop-up bar. The awards and Australia Day celebrations will be attended by Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador, artist Yianni Johns. Also on Thursday is a picnic and movie night at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre from 7pm to 9pm, with free entry. Australia Day itself will begin with a free community breakfast courtesy of Kooringal Rotary and Triple M Riverina at the Victory

Memorial Gardens from 7am. Hit 93.1 Riverina will be providing free activities, including a thong throwing competition, continuous cricket game, AFL skills competition and more. At 9am, 28 people from nine countries will officially become Australians at the annual Australia Day citizenship ceremony held at the Civic Centre Forecourt. Rounding out the weekend of celebrations will be the 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay at Bolton Park on Sunday 28 January. There will be a free breakfast courtesy of Sunrise Rotary and Wagga Wagga Marketplace Woolworths from 8am and the official ceremony from 9am. “Along with some great free activities and events as part of Australia Day, the Queen’s Baton Relay will be an important moment in Wagga Wagga’s history as we are the first stop for the baton in NSW as the relay makes its way to the Gold Coast,” Cr Conkey said. It’s the start of a new year and it will be an exciting one for the city. Work is well underway on the upgrade of the main city levee with tenders for stage two expected to be announced by April. By this time next year that work should have been completed once again giving the CBD a one in a 100 year level of protection against flooding. Work will begin shortly on the multipurpose stadium at Equex, which will provide three indoor netball courts as well as a facility that can be used for exhibitions and large entertainment events. The well-used and

weekly

loved Civic Theatre is undergoing a major upgrade which includes new and more comfortable seats as well as new carpets and a repaint. This work will be finished by the end of March. And here’s a free plug … keep the end of July free for the return of the Mayoress’s Charity Concert featuring the cream of Wagga Wagga’s talent. •••• Thousands of people are expected to join in the Wagga Wagga Australia Day celebrations next week. One of the highlights will be the announcement of the Citizen of the Year, the Young Citizen of the Year and the Ted Ryder Sports Award. A large number of excellent nominations have been received and I know the organising committee has had an extremely difficult job in coming up with this year’s

winners. The announcement will be made on the night of January 25 with a Citizenship Ceremony to be held after the free breakfast on Australia Day itself. A full list of the events is printed inside this week’s edition. And for the record I support Australia Day remaining on January 26. It’s a day to celebrate this wonderful country including the fact we are a proud multicultural country. It’s also a day where we need to reflect on the past. We should remember those who have fought to protect our freedoms and also to remember and to acknowledge the many injustices that have been inflicted on the original inhabitants of this land.

MOWING

R E P O R T

All parks, reserves and open space areas are programmed to receive one grass cut approximately once every six weeks as part of Council’s spring mowing program. The mowing teams will be operating in the following suburbs this week: • North: Estella followed by North Wagga

• East: Forest Hill followed by Lake Albert • West: Hilltop/Bourkelands followed by Tolland • Seasonal: Small parks citywide followed by Ashmont • Roadside: Lake Albert followed by Springvale • Village: Tarcutta followed by Humula

Head on down to Robertson Oval this weekend to catch the Sydney Thunder take on the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash. The teams will go head to head today and tomorrow, with both matches starting at 2pm. Admission to both fixtures is free, so get in early to grab a great seat. Hot weather is predicted for both days and Council’s Parks and Recreation Project Coordinator Peter Cook recommends spectators come prepared.

“Council will set up water stations and misting tents around the oval to help combat the hot weather,” Mr Cook said. “There will be limited shade provided, so we recommend people bring down their shade shelters and set them up on higher ground so everyone can have a great view of the match.” “Spectators can also bring their own fold up chairs and eskies, along with non-alcoholic drinks which must be in plastic bottles.” Food vendors will be available at both matches. BYO alcohol

is not permitted and no glass bottles or cans are allowed at the matches. The games will round out a big week for cricket in Wagga Wagga. On Wednesday evening, the Office of Local Sport, in collaboration with Sydney Thunder and Council, hosted a forum to explore strategies and ideas to help unleash the value of women’s sport in the community. Yesterday, kids took part in Camp Thunder at Bolton Park and learned how to play cricket like their T20 heroes.

HISTORY: The Beckwith Street bridge under construction in 1927. Image: Museum of the Riverina

ROBERTSON OVAL WAGGA WAGGA

B R I D G E R E PA I R S After serving the Wagga Wagga community for 90 years the Beckwith Street bridge will be given some well-earned tender loving care. To accommodate the works, the Wollundry Lagoon crossing in central Wagga Wagga will be closed for five days, between 7am and 5pm, from Monday 22 January. Council staff will make some repairs to the footpath and concrete bridge railings before pressure washing and preparing the structure for a fresh lick of paint. To maintain its old-time charm the bridge will be painted in heritage colours. Detours via The Esplanade and Freer Street will be in place during the work hours. Staff will be on site to assist pedestrians. Plans are also progressing with Riverina Water to remove a redundant water main mounted on the side of the bridge. Additional closures will be required, and notified, once these works are scheduled. The current Beckwith Street Bridge was built in 1927 by Charles Hardy and Sons and replaced what was probably a wooden footbridge.
