Mix of jazz + hoops feature at Gallery’s ‘Late Night’ Late Night returns to the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery on Friday 26 March, this time showcasing local jazz musicians Moto, with support from singer-songwriter Catseye Parish. The evening is being presented by the Young Creative Collective, which comprises emerging creatives aged between 18 and 26. Youth Project Officer Maryanne Gray said it will be a great opportunity to get out and enjoy a night full of local live music. “After the huge success of the first Late Night at the

Gallery earlier in the year, we are excited to host a laid-back evening of live jazz and indierock music,” Ms Gray said. “Pack a rug and picnic bag and unwind to the sounds of jazz or grab a hoop and join in the hoola fun with Dizzy Dilemma and Hooley Dooley, while savouring some dumplings or sipping on a nonalcoholic cider from the food and drinks stalls.” The event will be held on the Gallery lawns from 6pm-9pm and is free, but due to COVID restrictions, bookings are essential via waggaartgallery. com.au/programs

Biodiversity Bite Cats are beautiful companions, but they also have the potential to harm native animals. Researchers indicate Australian cats kill over 200 million native birds, reptiles and mammals each year. Keep your pet and our wildlife safe by keeping your cat within your property, especially between dusk and dawn. Keeping your cat contained also reduces risk of injury to your beloved pet through fights, attacks or vehicle accidents.

Lunchbreak in a laneway: renewing public spaces

Wagga Wagga City Council is continuing to revitalise the city’s unused spaces as part of the NSW Government’s Places to Love program with the recent renewal of three CBD laneways. The Myer laneway, alongside Civic Apartments, has been reimagined as the perfect spot for lunch with an artistic floral arch, festoon lighting, and an installation of pink, red and grey recycled milkcrates which double as seating. A series of local musicians will be performing for lunch goers in the laneway each Thursday and Friday between 12– 2pm for the next month, finishing up on Friday 9 April. The Fitzmaurice Street laneway, between ABC Riverina and Eastern Riverina Arts, is being turned into a beautiful nightscape, featuring a collaborative artwork between local projection artist Andrew Hagan and sculptor Vicki Luke. The work entitled SIGNAL, which will commence on Monday, is an

interactive nightscape projection responding to physical movement in the spaces. The projection will be complemented by sculptural works throughout the adjoining garden space, including chandeliers and lanterns made from recycled materials. The artworks will also have a practical application by lighting the laneway which is often used to access the Barrand Street carpark by evening diners. Wonderland Lane, located alongside Aussie Home Loans, has been revitalised with paint and will soon feature seating made from recycled materials. A previously unused space between Mingalar Asian Grocery and Roll Viet Café near the Baylis and Forsyth streets intersection was also transformed in early December 2020 into a charming lunch spot featuring an eye-catching koi-themed creative treatment with seating, lanterns and lucky cats. Director Community Janice

Summerhayes said Wagga Wagga was the only regional city included in Places to Love, a partnership between the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) and six councils across NSW. “We’re very proud to be part of this pilot project which is celebrating public spaces across NSW,” Ms Summerhayes said. “These reimagined laneways add vibrancy to our main street, giving our community more places to enjoy lunch during the day and help light their way at night. “We’re encouraging everyone to rediscover our city on foot, reconnect with local businesses, enjoy the creativity and renew your sense of place.” Places to Love is part of the State Government’s Festival of Place – an inaugural celebration of public spaces across NSW. ClubGRANTS funding opportunity opens to local community groups Is your community initiative, service or program needing a boost? Category one funding applications are now open for the ClubGRANTS scheme, which is administered by Wagga Wagga City Council. ClubGRANTS allows registered clubs with annual gaming machine revenue exceeding one-million dollar to share a percentage of that revenue with specific development and support projects. The participating clubs for the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area are the Wagga RSL Club and Rules Club Wagga Wagga. The local ClubGRANTS committee have met and determined the following priorities for the 2021

category one projects: • Mental health • Domestic and family violence • Financial, education and employment support programs Depending on the funds available, the committee will consider other state ClubGRANT priority areas such as women and family health, aged, disability, youth and transport services. Applications can be made online at wagga.nsw. gov.au/clubgrants until 5pm Friday 30 April. For more information, visit the website or contact Michelle Castle in Council’s Community directorate on 1300 292 442 during business hours.

Wagga Wagga City Council is aiming to help address the gender imbalance of elected councillors by running a free workshop for women considering standing for council in the 2021 NSW Local Government Elections. The workshop will be presented by the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) on Saturday 10 April 2021, with several current female councillors from across the state speaking, including NSW ALGWA President Councillor Cassandra Coleman. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said holding the workshop was an important step towards achieving diversity in community leadership. “Both women and people from diverse backgrounds have been historically under-represented in local councils, right across NSW,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Despite the fact that women make up over half of NSW’s population, they continue to be under-represented in local government – only 30 per cent of NSW councillors are women. “This affects us all, because when councils are making decisions, many community voices are missing from those conversations. “The aim of this workshop is to encourage women to consider running as candidates and

ensure they have an accurate understanding of what’s involved. “Our workshop will help dispel a lot of myths and give women the information they need to take that next step and run for office.” General Manager Peter Thompson said Council recognised the importance of equality between women and men as a fundamental aspect of a just, inclusive and diverse community. “We are committed to promoting equal opportunities for the full participation of women and men in all aspects of public and political life,” Mr Thompson said. “Council works hard to promote and achieve gender equity, because it is important to have gender-balanced councils that reflect the diversity of our community and to challenge traditional gender roles and stereotypes in a decision-making environment. “It is equally important that all women and men feel a high sense of security that they can pursue their careers in a safe, responsive and supporting workplace.” Council is also holding seminars on 21 April and 4 May for all potential candidates. The Women in Council workshop is a free session with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided. For more information visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/elections

It’s a milestone achievement for the 10-week pilot program which Wagga Wagga City Council and Royal Life Saving NSW rolled out at the end of January with the aim to educate children to respect the river. Each Sunday morning for the past eight weeks the Outback Lifesavers have teamed up at Wagga Beach to go through water safety and lifesaving skills under the guidance of qualified educators and volunteer parents and carers.
