Breath of Fresh air Three weeks into FRESH, and the month long program of talks, workshops and events is attracting strong interest as the community indulge their curiosity to learn something new, and experience something different. FRESH is a new concept this year which combines the traditional Youth Week and Seniors Week into a festival program of 44 diverse events with appeal to millennials, baby boomers and beyond. "It brings people of different ages, backgrounds and cultures together," Community Development Officer Victoria Lowe said. "Some events traditionally would have fallen under Seniors
VOL.2
Festival or Youth Week, but FRESH means everyone is able to take part, whether you’re young, old or in-between." There are opportunities for the Wagga community to meet and learn from some talented professionals and industry leaders from the Riverina and further afield on subjects as diverse as birds, clever op shopping, smartphone photography, felt making and contemporary dance. “Youth called for more activities and learning opportunities and we’ve delivered that this week with the internationally acclaimed Branch Nebula," Ms Lowe said. "Snake Sessions at the Skate Park has been well received
and Wagga’s young people have taken up the opportunity to learn parkour, skating, and contemporary dance and BMX skills from the experts. I’m looking forward to their final performance at 5pm on Saturday when the hours spent with Wagga’s youth culminates in a custom-made performance for our city.” In week one, the FRESH program included tours to Altina Wildlife Park at Darlington Point, a birdwatching walk with best-selling co-author of The Australian Bird Guide Peter Menkhorst at Marrambidya Wetlands, and a seniors movie matinee and tea party. Week two activities included a wild brush making workshop with Wiradjuri Elder Aunty
Kath Withers, a tour of RAAF Base Wagga and a behind the scenes tour of Gregadoo Waste Management Centre. The week three program has been huge as it coincides with the first week of the school holidays. Sound enthusiasts gathered for a field recording workshop capturing the sounds of nature and people at the Botanic Gardens, spotlighting walk in Wilks Park and a smart phone photography workshop. Yoga in the park is free and open to everyone at 10.30am Saturday. Events coming up next week include a Zine-Making For Beginners workshop, a Sustainable Fashion Talk, nature walk along the levee bank and The Memory Lounge, an
opportunity to sit with historians and record your family stories. And don’t miss a taste of India at the Mumbai Street Food Feast. “We’re happy with the response and feedback from the people who have participated in FRESH events so far," Ms Lowe said. The feedback indicates there is strong community support for FRESH. There’s no doubt that a diverse range of activities and events increases the liveability of our city.”

Cultural Art Garden launched at Ngurra Hub
CULTURAL GARDENING: (L to R): Mark Cunningham, TAFE; Tania Jones, Red Cross; Kyle Wooden; Sue McMahon, NSW Family and Community Services; Lisa Saffery, Wagga Wagga City Council
Wagga Wagga City Council is collaborating with the Red Cross and government agencies on a youth-initiated project based at the Ngurra Community Hub in Ashmont. Council, the Red Cross, NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FACS), TAFE, NSW Police and the Indigenous Affairs Group within Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet have joined forces with the community to support youth in the “Wooden Project – Cultural Arts Garden” at the Ngurra Hub. Launched on Wednesday, the project is the initiative of 19-year-old local resident Kyle Wooden who wanted to help fellow youth who are disconnected from education and employment.
Kyle worked with a group of young men who conceptualised plans to develop vacant patches of land at the front and rear of Ngurra Hub. They’ve incorporated a garden of native and bush tucker plants, a soft fall area with indigenous cultural themes, sculptural art pieces and a new staircase to provide access from the back verandah of the centre to the popular BBQ area. Kyle presented his ideas to the Red Cross, who coordinate the centre, after gaining support for his vision from local elders, Police and community members. Council was then approached and collaborated with NSW FACS and TAFE who agreed to run a skills-based program. FACS have provided $25K in funding, for the
purchase of materials. The project aims to build positive engagement between youth, community and services, and provide support and education to assist people with long term unemployment to enter the workforce. Any interested community member can sign up to the 15-week project, which commences next month. As well as building the garden, they’ll participate in modules from TAFE horticulture and construction courses, learn about Wiradjuri culture and attain practical employment skills. For more information contact Mark Cunningham on 0438 219 607 or Tania Jones on 0466 491 431.
UR ANQUINT Y ROAD UPGR ADES NEAR COMPLETION
Pavement rehabilitation works are in the final stages on roads in Uranquinty village. Uranquinty Street was completed earlier this month and the length of Pearson Road was sealed on Friday 20 April. Designated sections of Yarragundry Street are in the final stages of preparation work
ahead of the scheduled sealing on Friday 27 April. Road rehabilitation involves removing the existing road surface and reinstating the road with a new granular pavement and a two-coat seal final surface. Under Council’s 2017/2018 program, a total of $1.5M will be spent resealing 30km of road
from Lake Albert to Glenfield, Tolland to Kooringal and many more in between. About 10 rural roads are also included in the program. Wagga Wagga City Council undertakes its reseal program throughout the warmer months each year. wagga.nsw.gov.au/roads

Every four to five years a discussion happens in Wagga about tourism, namely, what could Wagga’s big thing be? Over those years I have heard one idea that has stuck with me, and I have one of my own that I will share, but I will also discuss the challenges and possibly folly of any of them. The first idea was to plant a million roses, not a million individual rose bushes, but enough of them to
bloom a million roses. The other idea I have is for ‘The Big Digger’ a significantly large statue of a soldier which will celebrate our links to the defence community and commemorate those that have served in the military. The challenges of any big thing are not just cost to develop and build them, but also maintaining them. There are challenges about location suitability as well as getting consensus from the community about all of the above. Probably the most significant issue is their
Invitation to apply for funding from the ClubGRANTS Scheme 2018 Category 1 Funding Applications
For enquiries please contact Michelle Castle at Wagga Wagga City Council on 1300 292 442 during office hours. Online applications will be received via Wagga Wagga City Council website www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/clubgrants Applications open 9am Monday 5 March and close Friday 27 April 2018.
value as a tourism driver. Australia’s big things have possibly served their time as research tells us that tourists are looking for active engagement and not passive attractions. For example, I have never taken my daughter to the Big Merino in Goulburn, but we certainly have patronised the bakery across the road. Wagga’s future tourism lies in a number of areas such as identifying unique and authentic experiences such as linking in with our rich heritage especially with
the Wiradjuri people and their history. We also have a large number of visitors for business and education related activities as well as those visiting family and relatives of residents, so we need to consider ways to extend a visitors stay. Wagga’s big thing really is the opportunities that exist to do this, and I applaud event organisers and Council staff who are working hard to make this come to fruition.
Councillor Dan Hayes
Community organisations are invited to apply for funding towards your local community service needs and priorities from the ClubGRANTS scheme. The ClubGRANTS scheme allows registered clubs with annual gaming machine revenue exceeding $1 million to apply a percentage of that revenue to specific development and support projects. At least 50% of funding from each club is to be allocated to Category 1 projects. Local projects will be considered for the following priorities under Category 1 funding: • Respite care • Women and family health and well being • Disadvantaged groups • People with disabilities • Children and family • Youth programs
I MADE IT MYSELF AT FRESH
On Tuesday afternoon community members participated in a sold-out felting workshop (pictured) at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and created their own colourful and useful piece of art, a neck warmer. The felting workshop was one of 44 events on the FRESH program which runs until the end of April. Events still to come include The Memory Lounge, an opportunity to sit with historians and record your family stories, on 27 and 28 April.
