Keeping the contamination out of FOGO
KEEP IT CLEAN: Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) Acting Manager Mathew Windle with some of the items which have contaminated a recent delivery of Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) to the centre.
Wagga Wagga City Council has praised local residents for their help in reducing contamination rates in our Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) waste collection, but there is still room for improvement. The latest monthly kerbside bin audit report on our FOGO waste, conducted in July, showed 94.4 per cent of the waste in the green lid bin was food and garden organics. Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) Acting Manager Mathew Windle said this was an improvement of almost 1.4 per cent on the results of the previous audit. “We recently saw a rise in contamination in our FOGO collections, which reached as high as 6.97 per cent in one scoop of material tested on-site. This equates to 60kgs of contamination,” Mr Windle said. “However, after a public education push, we saw this figure drop to 5.6 per cent in our July report. It shows that Wagga Wagga residents care about what goes in their bins and into landfill.” Common contaminants in the green lid bin waste collections are soft plastics such as plastic bags and food packaging, along with other easy-to-recycle items such as bottles and cans. Large chunks of timber and rocks are also being found. The current national standard for green waste contamination is 2.2 per cent. Mr Windle said there are some simple ways residents can help Council to achieve and even exceed that target. “All your food waste can go into the kitchen caddy and green lid bin; just make sure you have removed any wrapping or packaging beforehand,” he said. “Using a netting bag for your fruit and vegetables and buying products in recyclable packaging are just two ways to help reduce waste. Council services affected Signage trial at local sportsgrounds due to current restrictions
Wagga Wagga City Council is currently operating with a reduction in non-essential services following the State Government’s stay at home orders. The Civic Centre is closed to the public, however residents and visitors can still contact Council by calling the Customer Service team on 1300 292 442, by emailing council@wagga. nsw.gov.au or visiting the website at wagga.nsw.gov.au For a full list of Council’s services, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ servicechanges Essential services such as the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) and the Wagga Wagga Airport will remain open. Please note, while the LMC continues operations, it is closed to the general public and non-essential persons. The airport is continuing to operate, but scheduled passenger services have been greatly reduced. Residents with flights booked are encouraged to contact their airline to confirm their flights are still going ahead. Facilities that would usually host the public are closed. These include the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Wagga Wagga City Library, Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre, Museum of the Riverina, the Oasis Aquatic Centre, Glenfield Road Animal Shelter and the Wagga Zoo & Aviary. Sporting facilities and stadiums are also closed to the public. While the zoo has closed its doors to the public, staff remain on site taking

The shelter can be contacted on (02) 6971 4651. Officers will continue to assist home owners and proprietors with health related enquiries via telephone and through online messaging. The Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery is following State and Federal guidelines and visitor numbers are being minimised. Currently, funerals will be limited to no more than 10 people. The Cemetery office is closed to visitors. Office staff are still available to assist clients via telephone or email. The Cemetery grounds remain open, however, the restriction of a maximum of 10 people attending funerals still applies. Throughout all Council businesses that are still in operation, cashless transactions are encouraged in order to reduce the handling of cash, which can be a carrier of COVID-19. The NSW Government restrictions for the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area require everyone in our community to stay at home until Saturday 28 August 2021. Keep in mind this date may be extended.

are considering where signage needs to be interpreted in a number of languages,” Mr Creighton said. “This will assist Council to expand its warnings and safety messages in a number of languages, especially in areas such as the Riverside precinct.” Council will consider which ground to trial the QR code before having it implemented in the near future.

Learning more about the history of local sportsgrounds and the people they are named after will be the focus of a new trial around venue signage approved by Wagga Wagga City Council recently. At their 9 August Ordinary Meeting, Councillors endorsed trialling the inclusion of a QR code on at least one existing sportsground sign which digitally links back to webbased information about the person. It was approved after Council received a report highlighting that interpretive signage which outlines the history of a local sportsground is one way to improve recognition of the ground and its namesake. Council Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said the use of QR codes was an extension of that report. “Council has resolved to trial the QR code on at least one of our signs,” Mr Creighton said. “This is one way we can costeffectively utilise technology to provide information to members of the public who

Council News - A City of Wagga Wagga publication
Changes to two major community events Wagga Wagga City Council this week announced it has postponed one of its major community events set down for later this year, and cancelled another, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation and restrictions across New South Wales. The popular family day Spring Jam was to be held on 25 September 2021 but has now been cancelled. The 2021 Fusion Multicultural Street Festival scheduled for Saturday 16 October has been postponed and a new date in April next year is being considered. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said it was a difficult decision for Council to cancel Spring Jam for the second year in a row. Ms Summerhayes said Council will look at its options to run a family-friendly picnic in the park during the September/October school holidays. “Considering the current COVID-19 situation and NSW Public Health Orders, it is the right decision to ensure the health and safety of all concerned,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Performers we had engaged for the Spring Jam event were unable to commit to coming to Wagga Wagga due to the

from landfill, increasing the lifespan of our landfill waste cells.” Since the FOGO collection system was introduced in April 2018, more than 31,500 tonnes of organic food and garden waste has been diverted from landfill, 7233 tonnes this year alone. This week’s changing restrictions around the pandemic and therefore a difficult decision has been made to cancel it for 2021. “Spring Jam is a fantastic event which the community really embraces, so it was with much regret that we have taken this action. “In the current circumstances, we are considering a COVIDsafe ‘picnic in the park’ event during the September/October school holidays and will keep the community informed if this can be achieved depending on NSW Public Health orders.” Ms Summerhayes said Council staff are working closely with long-term Cultural Partners the
Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga to deliver Fusion in April 2022. The current COVID-19 situation is being closely monitored by staff, who are working in partnership with all event organisers and sponsors, to determine the event scheduling going forward and in response to NSW Public Health Orders. “We are working with event organisers to assist in rescheduling events that have been postponed and are planning on moving to Autumn when it is likely vaccination rates will be up and we will have greater certainty over events,” Ms Summerhayes said.
Biodiversity Bite Q. Where on earth would you find the
greatest amount of biodiversity?
A. Under your feet! A teaspoon of soil can contain up to 6 billion microorganisms all working hard to support our food crops, bushland, forests and urban gardens. Boost biodiversity in soil by providing food for soil bugs. This could be as simple as 'grasscycling' which is just leaving grass clippings on the lawn as you mow.

COMMUNIT Y GROUPS RECEI VE FUNDING THROUGH CLUBGR A NTS
The successful recipients of the 2021 ClubGRANTS scheme for the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area were announced this week, with 15 local not-for-profit community groups and charities to share in $131,967 in funding. Wagga Wagga City Council coordinates the local ClubGRANTS committee made up of a representative from Wagga RSL Club, Rules Club Wagga, Communities and Justice and a nongovernment representative. The ClubGRANTS scheme is a state-wide initiative which provides the framework for registered clubs to directly fund local priority projects and services. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the committee was pleased to be able to conduct the scheme this year, after it was deferred in 2020 due to COVID-19. “The funding provided through this program assists groups that may not have been able to secure financial assistance through other means,” Ms Summerhayes said. “It helps to ensure the valued services and projects they provide to our community continue to be delivered.” The 2021 recipients and successful projects are: Ashmont Churches Caring for Children – Breakfast Program. Miracle Babies Foundation – Supporting families with premature or sick babies in Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
Carevan Wagga Incorporated – Additional two-door upright freezer and installation of threephase power to upgrade power supply at Carevan Warehouse. STARTTS – Multicultural Women’s Art Project. Linking Communities Network – Riverina Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service – Emergency Support Packages. Gidget Foundation – Gidget House Wagga Wagga Extended Hours Pilot Program. Pro Patria Centre – Pro Patria Centre Project. Willans Hill School – Willans Hill School Bus. Cancer Council – Relay for Life. Rural Outreach Counselling – Matekeeper Volunteer. SHINE for Kids – Connecting Kids Wagga. Sunflower House – Purchase of a second car to provide one-on-one support to members. Riding for Disabled (NSW) – Riding lessons for disabled children. TAD – Freedom Wheels Assessments for Wagga Wagga residents. Defence Shed Wagga Wagga – Defence Shed Wagga Wagga Workshop WHS. Under the ClubGRANTS scheme, clubs in NSW which earn more than $1 million annually in gaming machine revenue provide funding for community projects and services, and in turn receive dollar-fordollar gaming tax deductions.
STAY VIGILANT TO FIRE SAFETY
The last few weeks of winter leading into the warmer months of the year is no time to become complacent about fire, according to Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW). Wagga Wagga City Council is supporting FRNSW’s winter campaign to ensure residents stay on alert in August which is traditionally a danger period, particularly during stay at home orders due to the pandemic. “We typically see a spike in incidents in August,” FRNSW
Media, Communications and Engagement team’s Alison Dunford said. “Winter is a critical time for us at FRNSW due to increases in home fires, fire-related fatalities, and injuries. “As residents spend more time at home than ever before due to COVID-19 restrictions, FRNSW is anticipating the number of preventable home fires may increase this month.” With restricted ability to
undertake face-to-face home safety checks, FRNSW is encouraging residents to complete a DIY home fire safety check to keep their home and loved ones safe. FRNSW is stepping up its campaign to raise awareness in the community about the simple things people can do in their homes to help reduce the risk of fire.
