GROWTH SPURT: The Livestock Marketing Centre at Bomen will undergo upgrades worth $2.7M in 2017 - the first works as part of the facility’s master plan adopted in 2016.
$2.7M upgrade for major facility The region’s premier cattle and sheep selling facility will undergo major upgrades in 2017 that will increase livestock capacity numbers and improve safety at the facility. The works are the first to be carried out from a range of initiatives identified in the Livestock Marketing Centre’s (LMC) Strategic Master Plan, adopted by Council in 2016, to help future-proof the facility. The Bomen-based LMC will undergo $2.7M worth of works, including expansion of the existing cattle yards, increasing the hold
capacity from 2700 cattle to 5500, addressing both a current capacity shortfall and catering for projected growth. To make way for the larger cattle yards, the existing calf pens will be relocated and a roofed area will be built providing a more versatile area for calf selling. An elevated pedestrian walkway will be built above the cattle yards, improving public safety to the cattle selling arena, canteen area and amenities. Added safety mechanisms for staff use will also be installed in the cattle selling ring. City of Wagga Wagga General Manager Alan Eldridge said the LMC master plan was a whole-of-precinct approach that ensured planning and capacity support was in place

now and in to the future. “The master plan and these upcoming works will go a long way in retaining the LMC’s status as one of Australia’s leading livestock selling centres – a title the facility has held for almost 40 years,” Mr Eldridge said. “In the 2015/16 selling year the LMC sold more than $387M worth of stock, which was about 1.85 million sheep and 222,000 cattle. “The LMC also provides an estimated $32.6M in gross regional product to the local economy and supports more than 200 jobs, through direct and flow-on effects.” The upgrade and improvement works will be done by a Wagga Wagga based company with proven experience in the construction of cattle yards in Australia.
ABOUT THE LIVESTOCK MARKETING CENTRE • The LMC is Australia’s largest sheep selling centre by number. • The sheep yards are respected as a leading example of flow through design and functionality • The LMC is also a prime cattle sale yard. It offers ring selling for cattle and is unmatched nationally in throughput efficiency and yard operations • The LMC Master Plan aims to ensure the prosperity of the facility beyond 2035

This is your chance to have a say and provide feedback into everything from the price of the program to the structure and what’s involved. “The focus groups have been scheduled at various times to cater for as many businesses as possible. You can also contact our team for a separate meeting or take part in the survey.” Focus groups will be held at the Museum of the Riverina Historic Council Chambers site on 6 February from 4pm to 6pm, 8 February from 1pm to 3pm and 10 February from 11am to 1pm. You can book your spot in one of the focus groups or take part in the survey at visitwagga. com/partners. The survey is open until 5pm, Friday 10 February 2017 and takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Own or operate a business in Wagga? Let us know your thoughts on the future of the Wagga Tourism Partner Program. The City of Wagga Wagga’s partner program is designed to bring together individuals, businesses and industry that have an interest in the promotion and development of tourism in the region. The program is almost one year old and Council’s Visitor Economy and Events team will be running focus groups and surveying tourism operators to gather feedback and inform the Wagga Tourism Partner Program for the 2017-18 financial year. In 2016-17, partner contributions went towards marketing Wagga as a destination for short or long stays and day trips, production and distribution of the Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Official Visitor Guide, development and upgrades of the visitwagga.com website, and promotion of the region through marketing and social media campaigns.

Have your say on amendments to planning approval process There’s still time to give your feedback on a number of amendments to the Development Control Plan. Designed to simplify the approval process and cut red tape, the amendments are the first major changes put forward by the Planning Taskforce, which is undertaking a landmark review of Council’s planning framework. “Currently when planning controls are varied by more than 10 per cent, a Development Application (DA) must go before Council, which adds to the processing time,” General Manager Alan Eldridge said. “The first of these proposed amendments will reduce the number of applications going before Council to improve decision-making times, reduce
costs for the applicant, and better use of Council resources. “There has been a lot of positive feedback so far and I encourage the community to take some time to read over the amendments and share their feedback.” The amendment includes development types such as dwellings, dual occupancies, multi dwelling housing and structures and outbuildings associated with these developments. The second amendment currently on exhibition is regarding approvals for tree removals. Currently, trees taller than five metres require approval to be removed and the amendment is seeking to increase that height to eight metres.
“Increasing the height to eight metres will reduce the number of applications required for the removal of trees,” Mr Eldridge said. “That will again reduce the costs to the community and improve the use of Council resources.” The Development Control Plan is a nonlegal document that supports the local environmental plan with more detailed planning and design guidelines. It is one of many planning tools that are currently being reviewed by the Planning Taskforce. To view the Development Control Plan amendments, visit the Customer Service desk in the Civic Centre or visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/public.

SECTON OF L AKE ALBERT ROAD CLOSED FOR RESEAL WORKS Residents are reminded Lake Albert Road between Copland Street and Railway Street will be closed today as part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s annual reseal program. The preventative maintenance works will see a new layer of stone and bitumen applied over the existing surface, which helps keep moisture out of the road base to increase the life of the road. Detours are via Copland Street and Kooringal Road and will be signposted. For full details on changes to traffic conditions during the reseal program, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ roads.
Back at the beach, there will be free family-friendly amusements to keep the kids entertained until 2pm, while the Beyond Bank Entertainment Tent will be providing free music and more from 10am to 2pm. Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador and third generation entertainer Warren Kermond OAM will start things off, followed by Social Hand Grenade at 10.45am, Michelle Robertson and Daniel Tooze at 11.40am, Jaycob Peters at 12.30pm and The Convicts at 1.10pm. The community is reminded the beach car park is closed, with parking available for disabled patrons and pass
holders only. Shuttle buses will run from nearby car parks – visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/australiaday for more information and a map with pick up points. A special thanks goes to Sunrise Rotary who will be marshalling the car park, and to Kooringal Rotary for the breakfast and Wollundry Rotary for the markets. The SES will be patrolling the event from 9am to 2pm. Residents are reminded to respect the river: www. royallifesaving.com.au/ respecttheriver. integrated footpath network. Some places may require an extra 10 metres while other may require more. The feedback received in regards to this motion was fantastic and I thank all the people who took the time to discuss it. For this month I have authored a motion to discuss the future plans for convention centre/multi-purpose stadium for Wagga to ensure there is a planned approach to meet the needs of the city for the medium and long term. I am also focusing on how we can improve
the complaints/ feedback process for Council. We should relish in the ability to receive feedback, both good and bad, as it says two things. The first is that someone cares enough about the issue to make contact and secondly that they believe improvements can be made. That’s a good place to start a conversation and provides an opportunity to do better.
